you prolly dont give a shit but if you are stoned like me during the covid times then you can watch all of the latest movies on Instaflixxer. Been streaming with my brother during the lockdown :)
I haven't done one on a small truck in at least 20 years now that cars are all front wheel drive I just don't see that many u-joints anymore. It used to take about 15 minutes to change once the driveshaft is off, all I need is a 6" bench vice and a 3 or 4 lb. hammer.
You just reminded me to take the battery charger off of my camera cart in the shop, I put it on yesterday on 10 amp slow charge for overnight and forgot. Thanks John.
Gordon, instead of having to use shorter bolts for the cap setter, what about using some sleeves on the back side of the tool flange to take up some of that slack? Just a thought. Great set of videos! Thanks for sharing those with us!
I enjoyed watching someone else do a u-joint for a change lol. I just hope you put some grease in that slip yolk too. I will have to check out the rest of your videos.
short C clamp also works great for pressing your cups in, I always dab a little copper coat on them(outside part)before putting them in( they slide in better) and pre load the U joint with grease so it just comes out the ends
Gordon, you should install the cross into the driveshaft side first. the zerk should point away from the power divider and the zerk should line up with the zerk in the telescoping shaft of the driveshaft. good to see owner operators working and saving money on their trucks.
brake honing tool works great for cleaning the holes....just light work with a little lube, you just want to clean them and not take a bunch of material out :)
Thank you. This was timely, except the PTO yoke I am working with seems to be misshapen (longer and narrower). So the new one is stubborn to insert. #$&$#!
how did you know you need it replaced my 96 fld steering a bit harder to turn that normal and when i turn hard and slow driving it makes a pop sound couple of times and turning sound my power steering pump looks good no play in steering shaft i was told i need new u joint so thank you for showing how to do it but wanted to know why if you dont mind....
Depending on the style some good ways to tell are it won't purge at all four caps, you see where the caps are rotating in their mounts, there is up and downward play while applying roughly 50lbs of force. Btw going forward or reverse would produce a pop not turning. Popping from turning is suspension or steering components. Check leaf springs. A hammer will allow you to check loose shackles.
Gordon,When you get a chance to reply- ...I Just did my carrier bearing on my 1999 Ford,(Same set up pretty much as your shaker)....Now,I Have a Vibration in low RPM's (4th thru 6th gear upshift) .....Did I "Poke the Bear" when I removed the Driveshaft? I didn't mark the Yokes with a marker....Ya think I should replace the u-joints-(Originals with 1.6 million on them).. Scratching my head here.
Each end of the driveshaft should look the same to be technical but I don't care on mine, it doesn't vibrate. A new vibration is a bad sign, I hope your U-joints are on right.
If you've been under a truck ( can't get at the drive line from the top for instance, nor do you have a wheel off the ground and the brakes released etc like Gordon does in this video ) then it will become apparent why manufactures or some anyway have put the two grease zerks on each ujoint for truck/equipment applications. Its purely for access to get to "A" grease zerk on each ujoint vs struggling trying to reach up around the shaft or be forced to move the truck. If you heard Gordon say and he is correct, both grease zerks enter grease into the center of the joint body and out to the 4 caps, there is absolutely no difference which grease zerk you grease as its going to exactly the same place. Its purely designed this way for ease of maintenance, they only had one zerk on trucks years back.
So how does that work when you have to make a second (or third) trip to get the right part? Does the discount off your monthly statement get a little higher for the inconvenience? Next time it happens, try asking them to run the correct one out to you at their expense. Surely they have a parts delivery car, truck, or van. I think fair is fair. (Presumably) you made one round trip the first time. They gave you the wrong one, so it would seem fair to me that the second time, it should be their turn to do the running. Just the way I think, doesn't mean that's how it will work.
It was Sunday, I'm lucky the parts counter was open. They will run stuff out to me but not on Sunday and not when I need it, it will be at least 1/2 a day if not a day late.
You will get a little play in them, Just push on each side around the joints and mid-ship bearing. If will feel a little bit of movement, you should be able to see the movement as well looking at the u-joint. Or if you are driving and you feel a vibration coming from the seat, odds are you could have a bad joint or mid-ship bearing.
No, I think they were throwing lumber scraps out of a pickup. I thought someone would think it was a .22 rifle or something when I was hearing that while editing.
Thank you sir! Just done my first u joint on my 98 shaker thanks to your video, well done, thanks for sharing
Glad to hear it helped. Thanks for watching.
you are a real mechanic master .God bless you Gordon 👍✅🥃
You are a good mentor that why I watch your videos all the time thank you
Thanks for watching.

@Branson Marco definitely, been using Instaflixxer for years myself :D
Luv you videos, I just bought a 99 volvo with 12.7 detroit these vids are helping me learn a ton...keep em' coming
Another fine job, and a great video, learning loads about HGV maintenance.
Thanks for watching.
You're a heck of a mechanic Gordon! I'd love to see how you replace a U joint on a car or pickup if you ever do one. Thanks for the great video!

Just in case it happens make sure the camera batteries are charged. :-)

Frieghtliner dealer !!!
It’s seemed always you have to take old part with you when you need a new one ☝️😂😂😂

Nice work Gordon. Hope you get another 1.5 million miles out of the new ujoint!
Thanks. I think it will go to the grave with this one.

how did you know you need it replaced
my 96 fld steering a bit harder to turn that normal

Lol I do the same with extra grease… goes to the fifth wheel!!

@@57bagre Thank you....I'll check for play i guess- Used new straps and bolts too- oh well,I figured id ask.
Thanks it's good idea put the extra grease in the fifth wheel thanks a lot
Thanks Pedro.
I recommend hitting both grease fittings all the time. Why else would they put 2 fittings on them?

That joint is a different kind of animal. Typically there are end caps on joint at the dif.
Thank you😊
Well that went easier than the removal. I didn't realize those cups were so long.
Thanks for watching Eric.
Can a bad ujont cause a truck to bounce jump in 1-3gear on a 18speed
Is the process the same for the other u joint?
Do u joints come already greased? We installed one today and did not grease it... is it something I should go back and do?
Yes you should grease it again after install. They do have grease but only for assembly, it might start wearing soon if you don't grease it.
So how does that work when you have to make a second (or third) trip to get the right part? Does the discount off your monthly statement get a little higher for the inconvenience? Hey Gordon did you have to take off your 5th wheel in order to do the u joint?
No. Thanks for watching.
Just slide your 5th wheel all the way forward or back until you have plenty of room.
You. Get lots of I deal to how to work on semi truck when I get my truck some day
Hey how do you know if your u-joints are bad?
You will get a little play in them, Just push on each side around the joints and mid-ship bearing. If will feel a little bit of movement, you should be able to see the movement as well looking at the u-joint. Or if you are driving and you feel a vibration coming from the seat, odds are you could have a bad joint or mid-ship bearing.
Another great video where did you find that press?
Amazon. I hope I put a link up in the description.
Good deal
Is your neighbor having a roof put on?
No, I think they were throwing lumber scraps out of a pickup. I thought someone would think it was a .22 rifle or something when I was hearing that while editing.
I thought it was a 22 or a ramset at first but it was so frequent I just thought it was an air nailer :)
Yes I found it thank you
thanks
ooooooooooook chú gordon robertson.
Another fine job, and a great video, learning loads about HGV maintenance.
