The 'Micro’ Cabin with Sky Light and Pop Top Roof
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 вер 2024
- I built a tiny micro cabin, which has an expandable 'pop top' roof like a campervan. I built some windows, raised the foundation up on legs and constructed it in the woods. I also installed a small sliding window from a caravan and added clear tarp material to act as a large viewing window once the roof is raised up. I still need to make the door, add some steps and all of the interior bits but it's good to have it in the woods finally! Stay tuned for the next episode coming soon.

So great to see your wife and the littles! They've grown so much! What a lovely family!
Mike's wife must have the patience of a saint to let him go and play in the woods so much. Bless her !
if you wrap a thin flat piece of wood in the end of the tarp and then nail through the wood, the tarp will stand up to wind pressure that would otherwise rip the staples and nails right through the plastic
Was great seeing your family out in the woods and the kids enjoying the little cabin and being out in the fresh air. I bet you can't wait till they are older an can start helping out around the woods
In the southern U.S. we would have more windows and call this a deer blind or shooter house. I have two 4x6x6. I painted them with a decking sealer called Deckover, it’s a thick paint that seals cracks in the wood. Nice job, I bet the kids will enjoy it. I’ve considered doing something similar to this but slightly wider.
I was going to say ground blind or low down 🦌 deer stand
You know it's gonna be a good TA video when it starts with rain in the woods
These Ikea builds are getting pretty complex. Like why does the manual say to go to an unmarked location in the woods?
Because other humans, will hopefully be scarce..
And no signal
😅
Lmao!
Laffin my a$$ off....
Why stealth mode? Has to be code related. It doesn’t meet code?! That’s what it would be if you were here in the States. Just kidding of course.
These micro cabins are all well and good, but you know what we all want.... Pallet shed! Pallet shed!
Saxon round/Viking long house, the kids would have a ball making the mud filling for the walls.
I like your little drop top cabin! I think it would have been easier to keep the water out if you had 6 inches overhang or so on the roof. Also you could go along your staple line from the outside and put a line of putty to keep the water from going between the staples. Long pieces of wood to prop up the roof, (designed in one of your ingenious ways), would look more on keeping with the cabin anyway!
Your children are adorable!🤗❤️🐝
Right: gas struts are a real complication.
Two pieces of pipe that will slide into each other. Make pivots on each end and a hole to slide a pin through at the desired height.
Keep it simple, just some wooden supports as you said that could swing down to support the roof when up.
You do realize you've just built the children a playhouse? Hopefully you'll get to use it too! 😂
100% 😂
Haha, thought the same, my grandchildren would love it.
It's lovely to see busy dad kicking things into the long grass and just enjoy holidays and making fun times with family. Good bless you and your family
21:54 - Yeah...However, surely the water with want to follow the curve and over time will start to seep in? Personally I would have hammered the plastic in outside and maybe add a bead of sealant on the inside seam to be sure. Great little build though! And the kids seem to love it! Hi Oscar and hi Eve! Love to the 👨👩👧 Family
Nice to see the whole family in the woods Mike. Jaxx doing some Jaxx thing.
Thanks!
As a builder, I found this,.. emotional
Love the ingenuity and just going for it. Some fun overnight's ahead. I'd suggest for the temporary supports two wood sticks/boards, hinged to the roof underside, and notched at the point you want them to mount on the wall. Slipped through a ring or sleeve. Hanging straight down they should naturally slide up until the notch catches on the sleeve and secures the roof.
Similar to a camping table legs or folding clothes horse
As big as the tarp is... I'd keep the bottom of the tarp outside the box as well, (you have the top outside) so the water sheds outside and not on your bedroll. Plus the tarp won't be crushed by the roof when closed and you won't need the bungee cord to pull everything thing inside... It will all be outside. 💕🌞🌵😷
Bet the kids have an awesome tree house:)👍
car hood is held by a folding rod that hinged at the bottom and has a key-hole type socket at the top. you could probably use same method. i don't really see any advantage of a gas strut - more simpler solution = less chances of failure. it's not like your roof weighs a ton and you are not strong enough to lift it.
That's what I was just thinking. Great minds think alike... and so do ours.🎉
Love to see a family campout. Such a good time and a nice swap from your normal videos
You are an axle and a hitch away from having a travel trailer with that build. Loved seeing the family, and look forward to seeing the finished build!
Hey Mike, make more videos of these two little angels. Stay healthy
Looks like a fun project. Great to see you out there with the family, nearly all at the age where they’re going to really have fun camping in your woods! You’ll make some amazing memories together. My seven year old loves it, I just need some land like yours! Thanks for the video ❤
I think your supervisors have claimed this cabin 😂 lovely for you to be able to bring the family and enjoy the woods
The cool thing about these flat pack cabins is if you get sick of storing them then you could always auction them off for charity!
Quality time with the family making memories love it ❤
Mate beautiful, to have your family with you in the woods, you are blessed 🙏, big love from Manchester brother 💙
I think some waxed canvas would probably work better and be quiter
I was thinking screen to keep the bugs out!
Its lovely to Finally see your family
Should’ve put a window on the other side so you have cross ventilation
Still got the door to build, possibly put a vent in that.
You and your Wife are adorable,,,and what can I say about your Children,,,how about amazing!!!!😊
I useto make large flats for plays backdrops, with 2X2's and canvas drop cloth (like for painting). After stapling the canvas down paint it on both sides with a latex based paint. When it's dry it will be almost as strong and light as fiberglass. Try this for the sides and top. You could also add a clear vinyl window skylight (but you'd have to sew it on, and seal it with silicone). Anyways, great video. ❤Loved the kids and family time together, its great when one can mix work and family at the same time. keep it up.
Ships/boat use stain in their wood. If you use a marine poly sealant over the stain you should be good to go.
Mike, you have a beautiful family, though you need to get Emmie some real woodland footwear 😊 you are a lucky man. I was thinking bungee (like roof tents) when you first started to bring it down.
I hope you have many happy times with the family in your wood and as the kids grow they learn to love the outdoors and your bushcraft and adventuring passion. Mike
You could always rig up a pulley and rope to pull the roof up instead.. nice to see you out with all the family.
Great to see the family enjoying your hard work.
I like the legs. Nice to see the family enjoying the woods with you
That's one helluva goat shed. 😊
The part that you stapled down of the tarp i would suggest buying a roll of butyl tape to put in between tarp and top plate of the wall then use cap nails to secure it from the inside if wind gets ahold of the tarp it will tear out where the staples are and water always finds a way in also I would use cap nails through all of the eyelets on the black outer seam to avoid the same thing
You might want to consider lining the top of the roof with some right angle wood or plastic with a bit of sealant type thing as water will always find a way in and sealing the tarp to the roof will help prevent that.
Lovely shelter ,looking forward watching overnight sleep
your 2 excessively adorable little sprouts stole the show !!!!!!!! I bet they will have a great time in that little cabin
A wonderful shelter for the children
Hi TA outdoors, thank you so much for sharing your videos, I’m enjoying all of the episodes you have filmed, I’m fairly new to your channel and still binge watching them! My friend you have lots of awesome, outstanding videos ❤️❤️❤️👍🏽💯💯 from Washington State 🇺🇸
Nice haircut, good clean family man.
No reason to not do family camp outs
You of course, gets a rough it
Beautiful family
Blessings on your tiny house and home
Actually, you could also install a small fan in the back wall and LED light power with a small solar panel on the roof. And insulate the interior walls with that. Reflective panel's material like for a car windshield sun reflectors. That would still keep it lite.
make some loops out of that clear tape so you can pull the tarp in when closing it. you can even come up with a three way pulley system to just pull of one cod and have all three sides fold inwards
Haha! My 5 year old daughter has the same purse! The kids and I love the videos!
What a fantastic play ground for kids to play and learn, you are definitely being great parents.
Looks good! Definitely recommend some silicone sealant along where the bottom part of the tarp meets the walls. Maybe also seal all that edge. The run off of water down the tarp (and into any cracks) will be a larger amount than you imagine e.g. when you sleep in a tarp tent in the mist, you get pools of water very quickly that are large in volume!
Mike.
Firstly hello to all 5 of you, good to see you all out and about.
Secondly p. It going to leek. The bottom of the tarp should be outside and the top of the tarp should be inside.
Apart from that it looks really nice. I bet some animals will use it before you do. 😆
Your kids are very cute.
God blesses
🙏🙏
Hey buddy thanks for the upload. Have you made a video about the camera setup you use while outdoors? I'm good to go really, but I'm curious about accessories like mics, lamps, weatherproofings etc etc. Thanks
Love it ! Never grow up mate! We need you be enthusiastic forever.
5:20 Ohhhh, so you did build everything yourself. Sorry dude, my bad.🤦♂️ Nice build dude. I see a lot of thought went into it.😎👍💯
How about a Washing Line Pulley strapped around the Tree with some Powercord you can Tie off to lift the Roof? Cheap, effective and far less of a headache than Gas struts
Good idea!🤗❤️🐝
Not as portable.
I built a fort like this with my friends when I was 13. Even used the clear plastic sheeting.
Brilliant, in some sort of a weird way, this brings back to mind the palletwood cabin. 👍🏻
Beautiful...your family I mean. The cabin is great.
Interesting concept Hey Mike have you considered doing a Collab with Andy from Kent Outdoors as of yet??
I’ve done a camp with Andy, but we didn’t film anything. Hopefully we will do a Collab in the future though. He’s a chilled guy, we had a good laugh.
To make it lighter could use sheet foam and fiberglass the inner and outer part of the walls. will cut down massively on weight and will also waterproof it.
nice to see your family - they're lovely
I like the idea of a mini cabin, great idea. However as a pointer your tarp needed to be pinned from the top from the inside and the outside from the bottom. I think currently the pinning is going to funnel all the rain water inside.
I think you’ve embarked on a life long micro cabin making venture, each one informing a future version😊Eve and Oscar will soon be designing their own, mum will steal all the best ideas and have her own luxury version 😅
In a former job I designed truck toppers with gas struts to hold them open or closed. If you post dimensions I can do some quick CAD and figure what you want to hold the roof up.
Use 1/4 by 2 inch lath (wood) and and use screws to put it over your plastic tarp to gain more holding power and help prevent wind damage! The nails will cut through if you don't! yes on not using gas struts, looks like the kids will have a neat place to play Kudos!!
Your kids are adorable!
Looks good so far can’t wait to see the finished product.
This has been great, and love seeing the whole family joining in just fab, what a lovely childhood they are having x
Fantastic video as always. Inspiration for summer build project, to be enjoyed by any age. Special treat to see such a lovely family. I was actually hoping Graeme would pop in at any moment.
This has given me a idea! Thanks for sharing your project!
I loved you in the show The Gentlemen on Netflix!
Think on how water runs, it will run into the cabin from the top and after some time at the bottom. The tarp should be on the outside, not going into the cabin, just a tip 😊. I'm thinking of making combi camp bike trailer very soon 😁
That thing looks like you could pull it around with an E-bike. 😊
That needs some spirt level beads on the base, then a ice dispenser and a cocktail bar and it will be complete
Won't let me edit. The plastic along the edge, seal it first with a silicon sealant/mastic and then run a strip of beading down along the top of the plastic and tack down the beading. It will ensure it is water tight AND the beading will stop the plastic tearing along where the staples are. My uncle did this on his plastic greenhouse after a strong wind took out the walls when the plastic ripped around the tacks. Slightly more work but also longer lasting and you don't want water leaking in and running down the walls.
when it rains the water will follow the sides and follow the tarp that goes inside like a drain and the cabin will have quite a bit of water leaking in .. (yeah i made this misstake aswell)
You can always use a threaded rod to hold the roof the use an impact drill or similar mike in please of a gas strut
I know it’s more than likely too late but what about having the hinges at the other end? You’d make the short end taller and the rain would still run off when open or shut
I would love to see a dyi teardrop with a pop top roof.
I might've used a screen instead of tarp or attach the tarp to the outside. Would get better ventilation and rain seal.
Gas struts are meant to be installed when closed, and a whole lot of math should've been done for you on the packaging but if it wasn't it's not hard to find online. Those eyes would work with a bushing and bolt. A ball and socket may create too much play. IMHO 2 sticks bolted in the roof with sockets or pockets is the best option. Along with long strap hinges!
Oh the kids are so cute! I hope they had a good time out there in the woods. The cabin looks really practical and should be cozy in cool weather.
I always enjoy your build videos.
What a hoot - I love it!
ayyy i was cringing when you hammering with the axe facing your own head.
You could possibly use trunk lid hydralicx gas struts junk yard or salvage yard
So awesome to your entire family out enjoying the property!! Thanks, see you next video!
That's a pretty cool setup. Nice job.
Nice family its nice to see
I like how well thought out the many details are in this project.
Nice litle build really hope we get to see another big build again in the future like the viking build in the past
Yes there will be at some point 👍🏻
Thanks 😌
I think the bed frame gas struts would work brilliantly and there cheap
You should get the #1 Cool Dad Award!
"Oh my son's fallen over"- he's fine wasn't the correct scream lmao
I would suggest some extra sealing with silicone for bottom part of plastic film. For me it still looks not enough waterproof. Sorry for my bad English.
Nice job!
Doesn't need the gas struts. Just over engineering. I like the all wood vibe and I don't think the gas struts will really add a lot. Really nice setup.
Cheers mate
If the tarp is nailed into the inside of the 'cabin' then the rain is going to come inside. The bottom nails could likely be better if they're on the outside entirely - I saw you stapled them on the top of the rail but the water will still flow along the plastic into the cabin I'm afraid...unless you have something else in mind to help with that.
Nice job! You are always thinking. The British outdoor man! I have followed you for years. Thanks 🎸🔪
