      -You kept me like a secret, but I kept you like an oath.

    A little backstory!
    So yes, this song is about her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal. He was 29 at the time, and she was 20. she then turned 21, and she was SO excitd to present him to everyone she loved (her family and friends) but didn't show up at her birthday as he promissed. that was a breaking point for her (and for her family too). a huge red flag. She talks about this specific event in "the moment i knew". In "Coney Island" (from her last album "Evermore") she also wrote a line inspired in this moment.
    -This relationship of them kinda went on and off at the end, this is illustrated when she says "and you call me back again just to break me like a promise", and then she has an entire song about it called "We are never ever getting back together", which has a way more happy tone (it talks about how he would call her and they would go back together and then it would go down to hell again and so on and so on).
    -At one point she sings "and i was never good at telling jokes, but the punch line goes..." she mentions in many songs about how he would make her feel stupid whenever she would try to be funny. In "I bet you think about me" with the line "You laughed at my dreams, rolled your eyes at my jokes". Also in the song "Begin again" with the line "i think its strange that you think im funny cause HE never did" (HE being Jake)
    - She mentions a scarf that she forgot there at her sister's house, and when they broke up he mailed her back everything she owned except that one scarf. there are actual photos of them together with her wearing that scarf and then pictures of him after their breakup wearing it. You can see him here, at the end of the video, wearing that scarf when she is presenting her book. This scarf makes a cameo in the music video of "i bet you think about me". Taylor gives a present to "his new bride" (its his wedding day) and in that package there is the scarf, which the bride accepts happily.
    -Both in "we are never ever getting back together" and "i bet you think about me" she mentions of how fan he was of indie music, and how he would belittle her music style. insinuating it wasn't cool/sophisticated enough. He hated pop music, and this is why she made the song "we are never ever getting back together" so catchy and as much pop as possible. the line is → "And you would hide away and find your peace of mind, With some indie record that's much cooler than mine", and for "i bet you think about me →"I bet you think about me when you're out
    , At your cool indie music concerts every week". (you should totally react to that music video btw, its amazing, both the video and the song!)

      I think one of the saddest parts of this song is the underlying tone that she believes(at the time of writing) that it could've worked out if he had just been patient with her. Like the line about how it was love and he never called it what it was. And the line about it was a masterpiece until he tore it all up. And the back before you lost the one real thing you've ever known. And how it was rare. And she's literally saying that's how she remembers it. Yes there were hiccups, but she remembers it as being her greatest love. When it was such a nightmare of a relationship.

      @@dottiequinn9625 totally agree. It is very interesting when you pose it that way, particularly in contract to what was said above about how he treated her. It makes me wonder why relationships like this are so hard to get over, especially when a person is treated so badly. Abuse and the power and control wheel come to mind. Curious what others think.

    • @dottiequinn9625
      @dottiequinn9625 3 роки тому +12

      @@TheEtherealgrl from my understanding of the situation (which is very little) the line it reminds you of innocence makes me think that she thought of him as a grown up and a grown real relationship. She thought there was a chance at forever. And when people get that feeling of this is "it" there's a change. All of a sudden it's easier to excuse "indiscretions all in good fun" (tolerate it). She was willing to let a grown man basically groom her into his perfect bride because she believed him to be her future husband. In the line "you told me about your past thinking your future was me" she remembers him talking like it would be forever. So to me, it feels like he gave her the impression they would get married only for him to ruin everything by dumping her and then strung her along to "break her like a promise".
      She talks about this shift in a few of her songs. She also talks about how difficult it is to be with her. So she probably thinks/thought of it as a trade off. Of course this is all speculation.
      It could have also been a trust in him as the older person, that he would bring her to his level of maturity or make her better in some way.

    • @hazey6945
      @hazey6945 3 роки тому +22

      @@TheEtherealgrl From experience.. it might be hard to get over because.. they don’t treat you badly the entire time. The beginning is such a whirlwind of romance and “Is he real?” No one has ever made me feel this way. Blah blah. My ex took a lot of time treating me with feigned adoration. The ever so charming facade, the protector, the wooing me, giving me just enough praise that I would go out of my way to do more for him to feel that validation. And then they have you. Your happiness and mood is based off of theirs. It became this weird co dependent thing that happens so little by little you don’t realize it until they start to treat you like shit and everything is your fault and you ruined a perfectly great time by bitching about something afterwards. The age gap is relatable for me as well. Like Jake, my ex was 10 years older than me. So I think we were at this age where we have this inexperience in love and it’s easy to take advantage of that. They love how special we make them feel because we are genuinely falling in love with them and for them it’s just an ego trip. Sorry that was so long lol but that’s my insight.

    2 things that really hit me from the short film:
    1. at the end I think it's so important that she is just repeating over and over again "you remember it all too well" because during the fighting scene he is constantly gaslighting her telling her that he doesn't remember what happened but she knows that he remembers it just like he remembers the relationship at its goods and bads even if he says he doesn't.
    2. at the end of the film when taylor is reading her book, the audience is her fans. she is able to retell her story to us and use it as a way to connect and redefine what it means. If you read her mouth she actually says "I walked through the door with you, the air was cold," which is the first line of the song.
    honestly i could do a whole analysis on the genius of taylor swift with this film and how much details she put into it but those are probably my favorites

    Congrats to Taylor but also to you!!! I like how u judged his behavior.. The fast that u understood how he was hurting her but did it so nonchalantly (if thats the way to say it, im Slovenian😅), but then twisting it and make it like it’s her fault.. And then saying sorry just to make it stop cause he’s annoyed/tired of it not cause it is hurting him to see her hurt.. I feel it is so common these days but so toxic..
    And for u as a man to recognize her hurt and his intentional and manipulative behavior and to admit all that without seeing her as being dramatic or overreacting, “creating a problem from literally nothing”..
    Woah, just thank you. I didnt know it but I needed your reaction in my life.. your wife is a lucky girl! ♥️

    I'm not even much of a T Swift fan, but I have to give her mad props for this entire experience. The lyrics, the vocals, the short film. Good Lawd. Fantastic. And man, do the lyrics hit hard and deep in places. "So casually cruel in the name of being honest." I was married to a narcissist so this song brings a lot out I thought I'd dealt with. And btw, your reactions are the best and most enjoyable I've ever watched.

    It's super interesting what u said about the male character and the comments on his personality and him potentially being a narcissist. The song is presumably about Jake Gyllenhaal (I mean it's pretty confirmed cuz Dylan looks way too much like him in this and the whole age gap storyline and the scarf thing in the short film mirrors their relationship) and now Im not a psychiatrist so Im not going to actually diagnose Jake with being a narcissist, but as someone who was a big fan of his and watched a lot of his interviews and stuff, he definitely puts on a really charming and charismatic facade like u talked about. As soon as I watched this short film, a doubt never crossed my mind that Jake would be able to say and do the things that taylor mentions in this because in his interviews he comes across very funny and charming but u can almost tell that he's putting on an act. Idk, it just was crazy for me, who was very familiar with the way Jake acted on tv to see him broken down by someone who knew him a lot better than I did. And a big thing that ive heard is that Jake was very pretentious and wanted to be seen as "a serious actor" and so that's why he kind of hid their relationship, almost like he was ashamed of his own image if he was seen with young, naive, good girl Taylor (hence the lyric, u kept me like a secret and I kept u like an oath, meaning both he wanted to hide their relationship but also that he had little loyalty to the relationship like how a lot of people have little loyalty to keeping a secret) and in his interviews as well as the roles he takes u can 100% tell he's pretentious and would be the type of person who was too worried about how people perceived him rather than being there for their partner.

    I think the scene where you said it was her going out and trying to take her mind off things or something like that was actually her going with him to an event related to his job and being left alone since it was during the "some actress asking me what happened" line and this is rumored to be about Jake Gyllenhaal who is an actor. “The Moment I Knew” is a great song to hear and connects to this song through the birthday scene, it expands on that part of the story further. It’s very heart wrenching and will also make you feel a lot in a very little amount of time. Taylor has a way of placing such complex thoughts and emotions into extremely simple sentences with just a few words. It’s quite brilliant. You have a way of expanding on what Taylor writes in very insightful ways. I really enjoy your reactions!

    Your reaction is just perfect. The acting here is incredible. Taylor did an amazing job writing and directing a short film that totally conveys the message of her song. The whole concept of the song/movie of learning a person isn't who they first come across as doesn't just apply to a romantic relationship. Like you said, it tends to happen when people are very charismatic. They make you feel important or special from the moment you first meet them. After awhile you're no longer important or special, because they've moved on to the next new person they have charmed. The argument can be very similar regarding being made to feel like you are the one being selfish and the way it gets flipped back onto you. Unless you find someone else who they've done the same thing to, you have no one to talk to about it because everyone else thinks they are still the most amazing person they have ever met. You can tell others are very uncomfortable when you do try to talk to them because they have never seen that side of the person before, and still think they are one of best people they have ever met in their lives. You're the bad guy, even though you were just along for the ride.
    The thing that really gets me....At the very end of the long dialogue part where he is repeatedly saying he is sorry, it sounds to me like he admits he dropped her hand....three minutes before that he said over and over that he didn't even remember what she was talking about.

    Hey so finally it got unblocked!! Always wait for your reactions dude😃 So some quick history-
    *This song was her magnum opus(still is) when it was 5 min long in 2012 album Red. It was initially 15 min long and then it was cut to fit the album until us fans pestered her to release it and she finally did it🥺
    * Also its about Jake Gyllenhaal and the age gap between the the actors here is same as she and Jake had(9-10yrs).
    *He didn't show up at her 21st birthday, and there's a theory in her fanbase that's why she was so happy for her 22nd birthday that she wrote a song about it🥺
    Last but not the least, can you please react to Nothing new by her?
