      That is an interesting question. The answer is easy: no. The EU are a collective of (supposedly) democratic states. The collective uphold a common view on the requirements for democracy. But every member state is sovereign. They make their own laws and policies. Even when a certain member state changes their laws or manner with regards to their democracy, in such a way that breaches democracy standards, the other EU states may disagree, but have hardly any ability to correct that state. For example: democracy in Hungary and now also Poland are not within Europe's standards. But more than reprimands have not been made. Nor have they been expelled. The question whether the UK could be expelled from the EU assumes an authority of the EU over member states that really does not exist (and has been the unjust case for Brexit as a necessity for the UK to be sovereign - it already is).

      Steve said : _"If they simply crash out then they will be breaking the law that they just passed."_
      actually Steve, the law only prevents the UK from deliberately leaving (by action or by deliberate inaction) ... However, if the UK simply does nothing, it will automatically be ejected on the due date, without a deal. We can ask for an extension, but it is increasingly likely that this will be refused - as it only takes one country to veto.
      So, no, a 'no-deal' brexit is only marginally less likely than it was before.

      @@garychap8384 If they drag Boris to court there's a strong argument for the law of non-contradiction, which means one of the laws would need to be repealed/amended, which one do you think would get repealed/amended?
      It's quite clear that bill 6 is designed as a power grab, they know they can't outright revoke Art 50 because of the backlash they would receive from the public and they can't amend it because it's an international treaty. Which means by logic they would have to repeal bill 6, as they can't amend it because the entire point of bill 6 is a law to make a law they made illegal even though the law they are making illegal is still the law....that they made!

    • @garychap8384
      @garychap8384 4 роки тому

      @@sumorabbit2160 ummm… I didn't mention taking Boris to court. Perhaps you meant to reply to Steve.
      Either way, you may not be aware of this... but many who supported the bill are also staunch brexiteers - they just reject a *no deal* Brexit … which is what Boris is actively seeking.
      Obviously, the lib-dems are, indeed, hoping they can wangle a revocation of article 50... but you can't make such a broad generalisation against everyone that supported Bill 6... they're actually quite a mixed bunch.
      Also, the hard brexiteers are spinning a bit of a lie... and it's quite an easy one to spot.
      For example, Farage is currently giving talks to business leaders about how much money stands to be made post-Brexit, by opening the UK up to health insurance markets - of course, the NHS has to go, and he admits that. So much for British values.
      Basically, Farage and the various hard brexiteers currently occupying the front bench are already in the queue for a big payout, but they need to slam the door on the EU to make it happen.
      But, you're quite welcome to go on believing that Boris is all sweetness and light. I've been here long enough to know that it's futile to argue sense with either side of this debate. The trenches are dug and nobody is going to give an inch.
      So, I'm already expecting you to argue. Just know that I really don't care … I don't even have a horse in this race as I'm a triple-national and I live on a yacht. I just find the whole sordid mess deeply manipulative (on both sides) and a thoroughly shameful display.
