Good question. It was mainly because I didn't want that added motor weight for a structure that was already pretty top heavy. The centre shaft took up most of the space to had to build the drive system around it. I might build a bigger, better version with that in mind next time

Impressive! Why did you make the drive system so complicated? you lost somuch torque on friction. I would rather put all the motor stuff at the top.
