    So what do you do to clean your main line in your woods and your feed lines

  • @scottsoper
    @scottsoper 3 роки тому

    What will be done with the old sugar shanty? will it be dismantled and equipment sold or will it be kept in working order so that you have a backup system? What can be done to expand the number of trees you have both now and in the future? I would be pushing to cull trees that are not maple any place I had control of the trees and planting more maples. I do not know what the dangers of having an all maple tree forest are or if there are any dangers. One partial solution would be to plant some other maples other than Sugar Maple just to mix up the woods a bit. When planting a new forest I would plant more trees then would really do well in the space at full size and then cut out the ones that are too close together giving firewood... If I understand things correctly it may take 40 years to get a maple tree to size. Could be that jewelweed can push back against poison ivy and other unwanted plants. I just did a quick google on it so more and more reliable information would be needed. It sounds like it is 2-5 feet tall in summer and dies down for winter so that is perfect!

    Open top stainless tanks? Not concerned about contamination in the sap?
    So when the season is done for collecting sap, do you have to remove all the lines from the trees or just stop collecting?

    • @MapleFarmer

      We collect the sap every couple of hours while it is running. Most of our woods run into a silo, we are hoping to add a silo to the one in the video next year! When the season is done we remove all spout from trees and take off the drop lines. The drop lines, spouts, tanks, and all lines in the woods are cleaned and sanitized.

    Because of freezing temps isn't there a risk of the pumps and hard line plumbing at the various locations getting ruined if it freezes for too long. Also can't the plastic piping from tree to tree freeze up and even if that plastic can handle the expansion it would prevent the sap from being drawn through the system. Or does sap somehow not freeze until a lower temp then the water freezing point ?

    • @MapleFarmer
      @MapleFarmer  3 роки тому +1

      Sap freezes. Therefore we have to turn them on and off depending on the temperature. Also we have heaters in our pump houses to keep the pumps from freezing

      We buy some sap from people who use buckets. When we test theirs it’s not uncommon to see it in the 3% range.

    How was your over all seasons yield? Im due east of Lake Ontario and this was 2nd worse season we have on record from 4 generations and the earliest end to a season we have had. Im sitting on half crop at best and tomorrow is the last boil here.

    I'm guessing you're using the same trucks to haul milk as you did to haul raw maple syrup?

      We bought an old milk truck that is now only used for sap.

      @@MapleFarmer I'll have to remember that, there's always good lighting in New York state LOL ( actually its very refreshing to hear a comment like that as some women who get complements about their looks start thinking the sun revolves around them and their attitude towards others reflects that, I'm sure you know what I mean )
