110kph still too fast for 1st gen i3. 90-100kph would have been even more suitable and much more efficient.

Try 90km per hour. Slow and steady might win the race.

I think he should have driven a maximum 95 kmh of GPS speed, or even just 85 because this (type of) car Isn't meant for Autobahn driving. Small roads in the European countryside are mostly limited to 80 km h, and such a used car is quite perfect for commuting maybe up to 2x30-50 km., and as the second car in a family.
And in the future when the battery degrades quite a lot more, you can have a kind of a jump starter in the trunk. You will never need very much electricity to drive 50 km!
But will the rest of the car last or be affordable enough to repair/maintain?

      You could take the train....
I think, 90 km/h is the best or go behind a big truck for slipstream. Otherwise, 100 km/h is the most realistic way....
I know the knowledge, I was an Ioniq classic 28 KWh driver. Most of the day, I needed the miles, I drove it dog slow....
Now I have an e Niro with 64 KWh, I will hammer it when it is legal to max highway speed. 😂
One thing is for sure, If you drive slower, it's cheaper. You use less energy, need lesser stops to charge and you are at the end a bit faster! It's definitely a win!

With my 23kWh Zoe, i fugured out that the best speed was driving eco for long distance, which is maximum 96kmh displayed, 92kmh real. Still good to overtake trucks. I drove plenty of times 750km in germany with this zoe.

110 is still too fast for a efficient drive with an i3, specially the i3 with the smallest battery. Max speed should be 100 and you should put the car into Eco Pro mode as well, it is wasted energy to run in Comfort Mode. Also max 21C on the inside temperature, recommended is 20.

This I can see on ABRP with old leaf. As i drove a lot always with data sending to ABRP it has good data about the car and it seems the best speed is between 100-105 km/h. I played with ABRP settings for highway routes where I limited the speed on different values. Faster increase consumption by a lot so much longer charging and slower driving starts to increase time more than what is saved from charging. This works for any EV but the optimal speed might be completely different.

I think that 110kph is a good middle ground. With my 52kWh Zoe I drove at 120-130kph, it had a similar charging curve. Below 110kph I wouldn't have gained any time, because the travel time would have increased. Above 130kph the charging curve and overhead for charging (driving off, plugging in) would eat into the travel time savings. I settled mostly for 120-130kph depending on the geography and charger availability.

@17:25 e-Golf is also stupid... Pulls the same even if you fire up the car and heater while fast charging.
Tested the other day with cold battery that limits charging to around 25kW or so. Full blast of heater using 6kW and the charger still showed 25kW.

    • @LoneWolf-wp9dn
      @LoneWolf-wp9dn 8 місяців тому

That's a wiring issue... The charger is first no matter what and the charger can only do 25k...while on other cars the computer is first and charger sits between the computer and the battery so the computer can request power for more consumers

My 2015 i3 shows 80k km. I drove it for 3 years on highways at 90 km/h (EC+) and averaged 14.6 kWh/100km, with temp between 0-20'c. I proved to myself that driving faster would increase consumption, and charge time would not compensate. Great test (x2). Thanks. Luv our i3 as city car (now), with Model 3 AWD for my 700km weekly commute (at 16.5 kWh/100km).

My i3 (94Ah with REX) seems to get slightly better efficiency than you were estimating for your fantasy 85kph run.
I'm averaging 163Wh/km this month in mixed driving with speeds varying up to about 115kph. Our average temperature here around London is currently about +8°C.

The 94 Ah charges much better then the 60 Ah and is also getting cheap to buy. This is a carbon fibre and aluminium car and will not rust on salty roads. Lasts a long time.

THIS is not a car for trips.
A 22kwh battery vehicle is for 99% city use and some short distance to a nearby town at most, not doing 500km.
With a 20kw/100km consumption it's clear the max range is 100km.

For my 2020 Hyundai Kona I find about 100 km/h is the most efficient. It depends also on wind conditions, of course. But going faster the consumption gets a lot bigger and the car does not charge that fast. At 100 km/h you can also drive behind buses and let them take care of the headwind for you..

When I leave with 100% battery (120ah), drive the first 25 % and go charging I use to get maximum speed with charging for about 15%. I guess it’s due to programmed limited use of a few seperate battery units in the pack. Comes in handy by long trips with charging mainly with my preferred chargers on the way

The difference is so small because the range is so smallto begin with. The 10-15 km gained on one battery is too small to start skipping many chargers. That is why the gains are so minor. If you still have to charge 9 times to cover 500km, you are not even saving that much charge time.

This is exactly why the quite new second hand cars will have a quite big depreciation in value, and it will take some time till a new car is marginally better than the two years old car. Now the differences are like decades of development. So what should you really expect when you buy a new car?
BYD is building a factory in Hungary, then they can build cars that cost 20,000 e on the European market. A perfect car for commuting in most European countries.
Nowadays millions of Europeans use 1,000-5,000 e ICE cars for commuting.
I was commuting for almost 15 years with a 1,500 e Golf, but in the summer I was driving a 20,000+e motorcycle...

Yeah this early stages of new EV tech is like when smartphones first appeared. Every year big updates that meant a 2 year old phone was severely lacking Vs a new one. Today, you can keep your smartphone for a long time. The batteries and horsepower is way more than most need.

That would be < 2mi per kWh which is quite juicy. Having said that we're having a particularly mild winter in the UK and yet our EV6 struggles to hit over 3 miles per kWh. It's still cold enough that stuff like heating is needed (and I don't think my wind/air model has a heat pump). It's quite wet at the moment as well and find I have to run the rear demist and AC to stop the screen misting up. Heated windscreen should probably be a thing on all EVs!!!
