I came to this channel years ago to watch brand new Tesla's being driven on the autobahn.
But I'm staying here to watch Bjorn subject old EVs to ridiculous range challenges. It's highly entertaining and great demonstration of how far EVs have come over the past few years.

We got a i3 94Ah two years ago and in summer we get 200 kilometers of range, in winter more like 150 kilometers. More than enough for daily driving. We also have a Kona with a 64kWh battery leased and in a few months it goes back. So while looking for a car after the Kona we decided to get another i3, a i3S 120Ah. So happy that we got this offer, 25k € for full spec everything, 15k kilometers. So hyped to get it.
In 20 years of driving the i3 is the car with the least problems we had. We love it.

More people need to learn how to repair or even build new battery packs for older cars eg BMW i3 60 Ah to say 200 Ah and even put the small front motor from a Tesla Model 3 in it too, also being centrally mounted and equal length drive shafts makes for a better drive too...

We own an i3s. Love that car. Summer range 200+, winter 150+. With about 80k km’s. Sweet spot while hammering it: 90 km/h… above 100… battery drains fast. So we use it for local travel only < 30 km’s. The other car for long range: Tesla MY LR. My wife calls that car “the i3s big brother” because it does have the same driving “feel”! And she is quite picky about cars.

The i3 should normally keep its full charge rate up to 80%, then it starts going down. When you reach 86% there is no point to keep on going. Btw its a bit insane to do a long drive in the small 60Ah version with heating set to 22C and on top of that not running in Eco Pro mode. I have a 94Ah model and i never run it in Comfort mode, there is no point really, you just lose range. The extra HP you get from Comfort mode and extra heating power is unnecessary. I live in Sweden, middle of the country and have very cold temperatures as well.

This is the original i3 which was sold as a city car "megacity vehicle" so much so that they included free loaners of a fossil car if you wanted to take a road trip. They also had the option of the fossil powered range extender (110km with a full tank) that could "hold state of charge" for times when you need a bit more range to make it to your destination.

Newer chargers along the trunk roads often do not have AC, they are installed as destination chargers where you are expected to be parked for 1-4 hours.
So you have to go to shopping malls to find 22kW AC. Many of them have free parking for 2 to 4 hours if they are outside the city center.

    @MichaelEricMenk 8 місяців тому +14

    Regarding driving speed :
I have a C-Zero, and on the motorway I have the technique of picking out a charger and adjusting the speed according to the range remaining on the GOM.
Optimal speed for distance in winter is on my car 60km/h. The reduced range between 80 and 90 is so significant that you may be able to skip one charger..
My max distance in two days was 1700km.

The MiEV/C-Zero nice small car if some small program changes were done:
      * Allow use of the heater when fast charging IF battery cooling is not needed. (the cooling never runs above 70%SOC when it is cold outside)
      * Allow the use of the heater when AC charging.
Too bad they discontinued the car. Small cars are needed. With 30kWh from the factory it would be a nice option for some.

It's not exactly the greenest way of doing a long journey but, particularly in the winter, stopping every 45-50 miles to rapid charge is tedious, but extending the range to about 110 miles is much better.

Björn, In Germany when parking parallel on the side of the street you have to park in driving direction. The other way around is illegal. That’s why the Charging port has to be on the right side. It’s just a fact. Of course, having two like in a Porsche or in a fat etron is more convenient, but also more expensive. For sidewalk charging it is necessary to have it on the right side. In Germany I often have to park illegally when charging on the sidewalk in other cities with my model 3

I still have impression that this particular pack has quite high internal resistance. From what i've seen in the streams, the pack voltage jumps to about +17-19 volts @125amps. An eGolf in comparison jumps only +10 volts @125. And it looks like BMW's BMS doesn't want to go higher than 4.09v per cell during high power charging. In my opinion, these 2 factors reduce power quite early.

      Quick math:
      500 km / 90 km/h = 5 h 33 min driving
      180 Wh/km * 500 km = 90 kWh
      (90 kWh - 12 kWh) / 30 kW = 2 h 36 min charging
Add about 10 minutes of overhead and you end up with 8 hours and 19 minutes which is the slowest of them all.

Maybe you can do the E-up/Mii/Citigo. Did a few long distances in the Citigo (800-900KM), and that is not fun. After 3 times fast charging the charging speed is reduced. So its better not to hammer it, but drive it around 105-110km/h to get the a decent range. The slow charging will not make up for the less range when you drive faster.

Give up nagging about the charge port being on the wrong side. It is Tesla that comes from a US context that does not focus on AC charging as it does not work well there. They messed up for the other manufactureres. And no, a long cable is a bad argument.

I don’t think you will ever get traction on the left hand side charging port. It would be better to have a balance between manufacturers to have a 50/50 split, and all things considered this would probably work out best for charger etiquette. It will never happen though.

@@bjarkethanner9263 Classic and basic techniques for charging Lithium batteries: Constant Current (CC) at low SoC (here ~125A at pack level) and Constant Voltage (CV) at high SoC that is not recommended to surpass (here 393V pack, 4.09v at cell level). First gen BMS/EVs mostly stick to these techniques with some variations depending on chemistry and external or internal variables (like temperature, internal resistance, etc etc). For this i3 what suprises me most is the high voltage available at low SoC (~3.8v). It must be something related to these particular Samsung SDI cells designed to last 4500 cycles (I am used to my eCMP BEV cell voltage that travels from ~3.3v at very low SoC to 4.11v at 100% SoC)
