I was a wing chun practitioner long ago, and I thought I could beat any one with one or two hits, and that I was able to watch every punch thrown at me. Then I had a real fight and I landed a few punches, but I also received a couple od hits and I understood that most people under adrenaline rush are stronger than they look, so I had to improvise a headlock (I never had experience at grappling) and even when I won, I never wanted to fight again.
Appreciate your more realistic approach to how things can really happen. Soo many videos focus on techniques where the instructor knows exactly what's coming at them and at speed they can easily handle (and look good doing so). On the street you can anticipate the punch but it may not be thrown the way your partners in training have thrown them or it's a different punch. This is a great video it highlights a key aspect of Wing chun which most people neglect which is simultaneously attacking and defending.. This is what gives Wing Chun and edge over even a boxer, I would love to see you explore this more. As an example a boxer will parry, then punch or dodge then punch but, in wing chun as you showed here it's block and punch in the same movement, all while moving forward...the same with evasive turning movements you turn and punch in the same movement... Most UA-cam Wing Chun fights always fail in using this concept ofcourse it's really hard to achieve too. You highlighted it here perfectly! Great video as always!
I'm glad you brought up the problem of only staying in one spot during combat. It's a problem many martial artists have, with the exception of boxers, who in my opinion have the best footwork for combat. @Izzo Wing Chun i would like to ask, is it possible to use bong sao against a swinging overhead right hand? What is the best defense and counter against a swinging overhead right hand?
I'm a chinese learnt wing chun (but not long time), I would say that many wing chun "user" on youtube didn't perform wing chun well becoz they only knew the movements, they knew the theory, they practised very well but they lacked of something important to use wing chun properly. Wing Chun is not only a set of movements controlling the enemy, Wing Chun is a spirit, a way of being alive person, you should "use" it as a whole part of your body and spirit, you would aim on what you want so as to adjust your movements for the reality. Many fake kungfu masters have the same problem, they just use it to fight, but they don't use it to live, I mean the principles of Wing Chun, they don't really get it, they just want to be like in the movie or something they imagined very good, but it has to be knocked out by anyone even normal people... however, if anyone want to blame KungFu is useless, please be noticed that, there is no useless KungFu, but there is useless person.
Having sparred in kickboxing, I can imagine how much I want but when you are in the sparring or fight you don't know what the other person will throw or when and how it will come. And the nervousness 🙈 Sadly there is no Wing Chun Schools nearby to where I live. But the forward pressure concept and using the whole body as you explain and show is really interesting.
Please don't take this as disrespect. But I'm going to ask if you can create a companion video showing a real jab. As a boxer - arm length and speed are crucial elements not being shown here. As well as the stutter fake ( Tyson Fury loves doing this, and Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s is almost imperceptible) Maybe if someone doesn't know how to fight they might leave their arm out there to trap, but a boxer will test the waters with a light jab and if you attempt to trap and it fails, they'll set up a stutter fake double jab and follow with a straight. IF that doesn't take the wing chun practitioner out, then the boxer will have lost due to closing the gap and being in close range for trapping, etc. As always infinite respect and you have another excellent video.
Honestly I don’t need to. Here’s the deal, we don’t wait. We have no clue if someone on the street is a boxer, wrestler or bar drunk. So, we JAM IN immediately. Not going to wait to see if you jab correctly or not. If it’s a fight, I’m going right in no matter what.
Having personally trained in Wing Chun , boxing , judo etc Sifu Dominick is 100 % correct in saying you should move in to the attack rather than staying in stiking range. Take note he also attacks the opponents body mass ( not the arms ) which will temporarily put the opponent off balance giving you time to deploy your attacking compinations . This is street fighting with no rules and makes sense to me ...
My art has a lot of Chinese blocks and strikes. I recognize the “poc” down block followed up by a straight punch and other strikes.. I see a lot of similarities in your style.
It’s Combat…Not sport. It’s for a bar. Bathroom in a nightclub. In between two cars in a parking lot. Fast ,violent, it’s not pillow-fighting with rules…
Lol. The best way to stop a punch is to punch first. Lol. That was Lees' motto too. Hit first, fast and hard. Mine. The best defense, is a great offense.
As someone who had been in their fair share of fights in my younger days, one thing I think many of these self defense teachers fail to take into account is how quickly a street fight turns into a take down and a ground and pound on pavement. I recall a buddy of mine who had just earned his black belt in tai kon do thinking that he was all bad ass, it took me less than a second to drop him on the ground and end the fight. What goes on in a classroom while it does help you prepare for what you may encounter on the streets, just know that usually the best option is to avoid getting into the fight in the first place or finding a way to withdraw yourself from it asap before the situation goes from bad to worst.
@@IzzoWingChun Oh I know you are. But I think that's the disconnect that I see between a lot of trainers and their students. There's only so much inclass teaching that one can do before you really need to be tested on the battlefield so to speak. Not saying we gotta get students to try to stab each other or what not but they know in the back of their minds that they're protected in a dojo or a gym. Not sure how you or other trainers for that matter overcome that mental block short of sticking them in Navy Seals type training course ;) Cheers and keep up the great work.
The reason you do want to wait until the fight starts, is because nearby in the shadows, there may be a police person, that will jump out and attempt to arrest you for starting the fight. This happened to me, as the guy was raising his hands I punched both his hands to his sides and pushed him away in two, fast and accurate, motions, because I chose such technique, they let me off due to my claim of self defence.
As a noob, the first thing I could block is using with Bong Sao for any punches. I kinda need to improve my reflexes in order to save my ass. Wing Chun was meant to express like a meditation and for defending, avoiding unnecessary violence. I had my anger issues. I expressed out without casualties by venting through Sil Nim Tao.
Reminiscent of the opening scene in "Heartbreak Ridge" (1986) when Clint Eastwood is attacked in a holding tank jail cell with a locking back knife. More importantly someone may never really be able to completely block a punch but it could be greatly deflected and attacked at the same time ?
The principle is sound, if U also nail it hard enough to stop their follow-up, but if U hit first too early, the DA is going to eat U alive when the other guy & his witnesses drag U into court.

What is the conditioning for this one
I think (yes, I do that sometimes) that the forward drive might be what’s missing from most Wing Chun.
@Izzo Wing Chun i would like to ask, is it possible to use bong sao against a swinging overhead right hand?
What is the best defense and counter against a swinging overhead right hand?
Wow I like this
Great advice
very good. close the distance and take away their leverage. great technique and practical as well.
Great advice! I agree 100%!!! :)
Having sparred in kickboxing, I can imagine how much I want but when you are in the sparring or fight you don't know what the other person will throw or when and how it will come. And the nervousness 🙈
Sadly there is no Wing Chun Schools nearby to where I live. But the forward pressure concept and using the whole body as you explain and show is really interesting.
Amazing video
Thank You SIFU Izzo.
Wing Chun Brother
- hELLA HUNG
I would love to learn from you.
Having personally trained in Wing Chun , boxing , judo etc Sifu Dominick is 100 % correct in saying
you should move in to the attack rather than staying in stiking range. Take note he also attacks the
opponents body mass ( not the arms ) which will temporarily put the opponent off balance giving
you time to deploy your attacking compinations .
This is street fighting with no rules and makes sense to me ...
Great info thanks 👍
What happens when you slappy hands him and he throws a left hook while clawing and scratching at your face? Demonstrate
We all go back to your mom's house and she makes us lunch.
Mr. Izzo. I have information to share with you
Right and left jabs ?
My art has a lot of Chinese blocks and strikes. I recognize the “poc” down block followed up by a straight punch and other strikes.. I see a lot of similarities in your style.
I saw an alleged Wing Chun practitioner go in the cage. It didn't end well for Wing Chun and it didn't take long either.
I've seen a lot of MMA guys lose in the cage too. Horses for courses.
It’s Combat…Not sport. It’s for a bar. Bathroom in a nightclub. In between two cars in a parking lot. Fast ,violent, it’s not pillow-fighting with rules…
@@seanmay3605 exactly. No gloves. No rules. The girls at my class were training with actual butterfly knives yesterday lol
@@seanmay3605 So it just doesn't work in any other form of fighting? LOL
Every block is a strike … every strike is a block
I missed this IZZO I must say I like the movie attack 😁💪🏽
Considering I’ve been wrestling longer than I’ve been training and teaching Wing Chun, the concept is something I’m very well aware of.
Sifu, do you advocate moving to the outside at a forward 45 degree angle when possible?
“Blind side” stepping?
Yessir. Moving to the outside of their attack, I just find it hard sometimes to move while attacks are coming in, especially at close range.
Yes , so good, lmao when you said you would be taking a hit....lol. Best true advice, all of it. Thanks
"Jab" proceeds to throw straight right
The reason you do want to wait until the fight starts, is because nearby in the shadows, there may be a police person, that will jump out and attempt to arrest you for starting the fight.
Totally agree, strike first, faster then him
You can also press b+2
Reminiscent of the opening scene in "Heartbreak Ridge" (1986) when Clint Eastwood is attacked in a holding tank jail cell with a locking back knife. More importantly someone may never really be able to completely block a punch but it could be greatly deflected and attacked at the same time ?
You only....intercept by..moving forward.
Keep nullifying the threat by aggressiveness UNTIL the threat is gone and or run after
The principle is sound, if U also nail it hard enough to stop their follow-up, but if U hit first too early, the DA is going to eat U alive when the other guy & his witnesses drag U into court.
It is how you articulate the force you used.
TRAINING IS THE KEY 👍❤😳. COMEBINE WITH(SPEED ) ...
Amazing techniques against an opponent who throws something and then freeze.
Of course there are exceptions to the norm, but generally action beats reaction.
Love these vids!
You sir are fantastic thanx for info hey you.look like Athey creek minister from Portland!!!!!
