By the way, it sounds like you've figured out how to extend the cable shifter. A friend of mine told me he used to work on and modify old Vanagons. It seems those came also with 5 speeds and not just 4 speeds or autos. He said he's never seen a longer cable assembly whether shifter or clutch. Not sure how many might be around in junkyards anymore or how much new parts might cost, though. Could be shocking......
