My first delve into black metal was literally a 17 year old me trying to listen to Transilvanian Hunger without any past experience. It didn't work out too well, but here I am almost 21, and black metal is my #1 favourite music genre of all time. I'd say the albums that got me into it the most would have to be Filosofem, A Blaze in the Northern Sky, Inquisition's "Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical Macrocosm" and a few other scattered ones like Death Cult Armageddon from Dimmu and Midian from Cradle. Wild ride
TheHearkenedDark i feel you man! Transilvanian hunger is such an abrasive and haunting record... definitely a tough listen for your first in black metal

I loved that you mentioned Sarcófago in the your video. I'm from the city of Belo Horizonte (Brazil) the same city where the Sarcófago began. Blasphemy did a show here recently; made a point of taking a photo in the same tomb used on the cover of INRI. I think Dimmu Borgir's "Puritania" on that CKY movie was the first extreme metal song I'd ever heard. Prior to that, I was mainly listening to Pantera and old Metallica.

YES.. no one EVER talks about puritanical euphoric misanthropia. It's the ONLY dimmu Borgir album I care about and it's definitely the album that got me into black metal. Love it to this day.. ICS vortex was so good in this
Cool topic. I got into black metal during the pandemic and have been really enjoying the genre recently. Here are my first 20 black metal albums that I heard, in order. Some I don't love, but I have enjoyed every one and they cemented my interest in checking out more that the genre has to offer. 1. Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark -> 2. Darkthrone - A Blaze In the Northern Sky -> 3. Darkthrone - Under a Funeral Moon -> 4. Bathory - Blood Fire Death -> 5. Bathory - The Return... -> 6. Darkthrone - Panzerfaust -> 7. Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane -> 8. Dissection - The Somberlain -> 9. Harakiri for the Sky - Mӕre -> 10. Darkthrone - Eternal Hails...... -> 11. Emperor - Into the Nightside Eclipse -> 12. Thy Catafalque - Vadak -> 13. Thy Catafalque - Naiv -> 14. Thy Catafalque - Geometria -> 15. Bizarrekult - Vi Overlevde -> 16. Mesarthim - CLG J02182-05102 -> 17. Havukruunu - Uinuos Syömein Sota -> 18. Enslaved - Utgard -> 19. Harakiri for the Sky - Harakiri for the Sky -> 20. Harakiri for the Sky - Aokigahara
I first checked out black metal about a year or two ago with Burzum and didn't really enjoy it. Then I got really into Goatwhore, Belphegor and from there looked up the more death metal influenced black metal and listened to Deathcrush by Mayhem. From there I listened to a lot of Emperor, Mayhem and DarkThrone and then I checked out Burzum again and found it ridiculously enjoyable. Now I pretty much listen to all black metal with the exception of some of the symphonic stuff.
My List: 1. Bathory - Blood Fire Death. 2. Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark. 3. Mystifier - Göetia. 4. Mystifier - Wicca. 5. Murder Rape - Evil Shall Burn Inside Me Forever. 6. Murder Rape - Celebration of Supreme Evil. 7. Dark Faith - The Sentence of Satan. 8. Hecate - Odes ao Oculto. 9. Brutal Morticínio - Despertar dos Chacais... O outono dos Povos. 10. Old Man's Child - The Pagan Prosperity. 11. Miasthenia - Batalha Ritual. 12. Luxúria de Lillith - A Volúpia Infernal. 13. Astarte - Quod Superius Sicut Inferius. 14. Satyricon - Nemesis Divina. 15. Immortal - At The Heart of Winter.
You are just a Death Metal pup but I thought you knocked it out of the park on your picks! I've been into Death Metal since 89 and you named half of my favorites and the ones that aren't are very great albums! Check out Dismember Indecent and Obscene which you may have by now. Probably my favorite Death Metal album of all time. Anyway I love your picks!!
Nice Ripping Corpse shirt. I sold most of my collection in 2008. I restarted two years ago. I need to re-purchase all my old black and Death Metal albums again(if possible). I'm with you on the Mayhem thing, aside from the new live/Alive re-issue for Dom Mysteriawesome. But that's it. I'd love to get my hands on those Bathory lps. As well as "Fallen Angel Of Doom" on vinyl. At The Heart Of Winter has some of my personal favorite riffs from the band.. also DISSECTION!!!

Been into BM since around 2009. Alot of these albums are ones that got me further into the genre. \m/
Sodom, Sepultura, and Sarcofago's proto-black sound got me into the aesthetic before I even knew what black metal was, and then I heard Celtic Frost and Bathory. It all made sense then and there.
I will be 45 Sunday. I have deemed myself a Metal Head since the age of 11 when I first heard Black Sabbath so you do the Math. I love these discussions and something I have always noticed is that people forget the age of the people who are discussing their influence's. You will however find that a true Metal brother and sister will always spit out the foundations of any genre. That being said I love your list with one exception ( remember MY age ) "Cradle" but I wont hate on you dude. I love the vids! I am kind of curious that you didn't include Emperor though. ua-cam.com/video/Jmlhq5rtFXw/v-deo.html
This is a great list been into black metal since the early days because im old! You list some of my faves, but turned me onto leviathan! Check out drowning the light they are from australia they have a HUGE discography but start with oceans of eternity. Also early ulver the first three albums, dawn from sweden with slaughtersun which will take your head off and of course gorgoroth!
For me it was these: Cradle of Filth - The Principle of Evil Made Flesh Burzum - Hvis lyset tar oss and Filosofem Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky Immortal - Battles in the North Dimmu Borgir - Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times and The Shadowthrone
The first black metal albums I heard were Darkthrone "Transilvanian Hunger" and Emperor "In The Nightside Eclipse". I hated them both. If it wasn't hardcore in the 90s I wasn't interested. I was wrong.
Ben NG the first black Metal I’ve heard was mercyful fate into the unknown. It’s more of first wave black metal but I heard back when I was in 6th grade. It’s great
the albums that got le into black metal Hellig Usvart by Horde Handful of Stars by Drudkh Sons of Northern Darkness by Immortal Welcome to Hell by Venom Bathory by Bathory Ancient Satantic rituals are crushed into dust by Hortor the dark hereafter by winterfylleth kodama by alcest
Just discovered the channel, amazing work, man. I have to thank you for that Tsujder mention because I never heard of that band and its fuckin amazing... Awesome list btw, I would probably add just a bunch of albums to that: The dynamic gallery of thoughts - ...and Oceans Hordalands Doedskvad - Taake Diadem of 12 stars - WITTR 1184 - Windir pretty recent albums compare to the classics but I'm kind of new to the genre.
Ruins Of Beverast - Unlock The Shrine. I did not and would not listen to BM that wasn't first or early second wave, until this album came out. I can not even remember how i stumbled on to it but when i did i played that vinyl to death. Behexen, Horna, Deathspell Omega, Antaeus, Satanic Warmaster, Katharsis, Funeral Mist etc were pretty much all the rage around that time. This album laid to waste any and everything i attempted to listen to in the early 2000's. It is fucking brilliant and highly recommended.
I dig your Taste. :) its almost the same as mine. Waaay before i owned all COF Albums i first got into BM in general in 2008 with Cradle's Damnation and a Day Album. I was like: "wow, how evil is that?" I said to myself...are there more bands like them? Boy was i in for a wild ride... I descented pretty fast into the Abyss over the Years: •1349 •Darkthrone •Tsjuder •Watain •Gorgoroth •Endstille •Immortal •Urgehal •Mayhem •Satyricon •Emperor and most recently i got into •Marduk
17:36 You say "I think of grim...I think of frostbitten" (I think you were thinking of 'Grim and Frostbitten Kingdoms' on Battles In the North -ha). I would go with old Immortal personally. Diabolical Full Moon Mysticism, Pure Holocaust, Battles In the North, and Blizzard Beasts all 10 outa 10 albums!! Pure Holocaust especially, for it's dark riffs, precision playing, and perfect icy Grieghallen Studios production!!
Great list. The only one I would have included was Meryful Fate/King Diamond. Yes I know King didn't have that black metal sound but like Venom, the imagery and lyrical content is very influential to the sub genre and I don't care what anyone says I love King's voice.
The songs are killer but the production is fucking shit even for black metal standards, like what the fuck is that drums sound in Witching Hour, Black Metal is way better album.
Burzum, honestly, is only famous and reveered because of his history. Otherwise (Filosofem/Det Som...), it's good to very good black metal, but Nothing mind-blowing, IMO....
Portal, imperial triumphant, antedulivion, abyssal, mitochondrion. I think it's a darker subgenre that is much heavier and true occult members theistic.
Great list! We don't have a lot of overlap in terms of the specific albums that got us into black metal (we definitely share one, "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia"), but pretty much every single album you showed totally destroys... Thanks!
Hey Brandon, what is your opinion about Proto Black Metal from Germany? early Destruction and Sodom Thank you so much for this video Your list is awesome \m/
Christopher Gase Sodom - In The Sign Of Evil and Destruction - Sentence of Death definitely had an influence on the second wave of black metal. I'm a big Sodom fan
excelent video dude, my fisrt meeting with black metal (that I actually like) was Verisäkeet from Moonsorrow.. yeah I know.. 'pagan cult finnish ambiental blacken...' but that album turn me into real deep shit.. so.. it counts at all..
No "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk"? And no "Under the sign of hell"? Also I would have chosen "Hvis lyset tar oss" over "Det som engang var" and "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" over "Deathcrush" anytime. But I guess taste is different.
Can you understand anything of the lyrics from shining? A lot of americans seems to really dislike subtitles, so I Would imagine that lyrics with a foreign language must be only for the die hard fans
blood fire death was also the album that got me into black metal, unfortunately i was a fucking dumbass to not check the reviews before ordering the vinyl, because my copy got sent in a mailing sleeve by some ass cunt and the cover is all fucked up, but that’s what i get i guess. i’m just bummed that out of all the records that could’ve happened to, it had to be one of my favourite albums of all time
The only black metal albums he mentioned was Burzum. And bathory has no genre its just bathory - same with Celtic Frost, its not a genre its Celtic frost. Darkthrone is awesome, but did one black album under a funeral moon, just to do it, but aren't black metal. Ok Marduk is awesome - all their albums. And he badmouths Mayhem. He said he hates their best album.
@DanielAsher... I'm right with you brother... I juzt turned 46 - like you I'm a long hard metalhead... you're Abzolutely fucking correct... concerning what era the hoztz are from... but, thiz guy hit zome older zhit from our era! fucking fantazic! I'd have to agree with him about Venom but what about King Diamond Alice Cooper? fucking Mayhem? Black Metal wouldn't be zhit if it wazn't for theze guyz..and on and on ect.. ect.. Zoooooo fucking amazing influencez from back in the day..that broke that door open ... hailz you fuckerz \m/ from a zizter
Cradle of Filth's Midian was my initial exposure to black metal, near 20 years ago. No shame in v empire at all. Mayhem though, im sorry i hated dead on vocals, and thats gonna draw a lot of hate. I liked euronymous from dmds, but i think atilla KILLS IT, best they ever had Dude, Leviathan's TTTW, he admits his was still on drugs and the reason of the sloppiness and such. Its a great album, but for everything leviathan is, you gotta do either Verrator for the best of demos, or The Tenth Sublevel of Suicide for Leviathans all-time best album
I like only the first 3 albums from Cradle Of Filth. I also consider the first one being their only "proper" black metal album. I do dislike the band for trying appeal to the public.
Not really a top ten, just the albums that got mer into black metal. URD, SOND, and Autumn Aurora are the best though URD by Borknagar The Dark Hereafter by Winterfylleth Autumn Aurora by Drudkh Handful of Stars by Drudkh Kodama by Alcest Where the Corpses Sink Forever by Carach Angren Sons of Northern Darkness Hellig Usvart by Horde Arcturian by Arcturus Ancient Satanic Rituals Are Crushed To Dust by Hortor Bathory by Bathory
Celtic Frost doesn't get enough credit for their influence on hardcore. Carnivore, Sheer Terror, cro-mags all worshiped at the Frost alter
They influenced every genre that matters: black, death, thrash, gothic, doom, hardcore, you name it.
First black metal album i bought was emperor:in the nightside eclipse. Such a majestic album

I got into black metal when I was 11(now I'm 15). I started with Mayhem, Venom and Inquisition.
Inquisition is a surprising start for an 11 year old.

Puritania by Dimmu Borgir was absolutely my first foray into black metal, that was back around 2003 maybe. Still one of my favorite bands and songs.

YES.. no one EVER talks about puritanical euphoric misanthropia.
1. Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark -> 2. Darkthrone - A Blaze In the Northern Sky -> 3. Darkthrone - Under a Funeral Moon -> 4. Bathory - Blood Fire Death -> 5. Bathory - The Return... -> 6. Darkthrone - Panzerfaust -> 7. Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane -> 8. Dissection - The Somberlain -> 9. Harakiri for the Sky - Mӕre -> 10. Darkthrone - Eternal Hails...... -> 11. Emperor - Into the Nightside Eclipse -> 12. Thy Catafalque - Vadak -> 13. Thy Catafalque - Naiv -> 14. Thy Catafalque - Geometria -> 15. Bizarrekult - Vi Overlevde -> 16. Mesarthim - CLG J02182-05102 -> 17. Havukruunu - Uinuos Syömein Sota -> 18. Enslaved - Utgard -> 19. Harakiri for the Sky - Harakiri for the Sky -> 20. Harakiri for the Sky - Aokigahara
Tom Spencer I think many people the first time they listen to black metal don't immediately enjoy it, it's somewhat of an acquired taste
Scourge of Vinyl Certainly took me a good 6 months
Dude, I know this is 3 years old but I just checked out shining and that shit is awesome
Check out the last afsky álbum im sure that you are going to LOVE it

Check out the Greek Black metal scene it's so fucking sick my favorite scene! Look up Rotting Christ, Varathron, Necromantia, and Macabre Omen
Hell of a list there man! Some fantastic records!
Weekend Black Metal in my city starting at this night! Live hordes in two days is amazing!!! 👏
For me it was these:
Cradle of Filth - The Principle of Evil Made Flesh
Burzum - Hvis lyset tar oss and Filosofem
Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky
Immortal - Battles in the North
Dimmu Borgir - Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia
Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times and The Shadowthrone
Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk by Emperor is what got me into black metal.
I got into Cradle of Filth in 1998 and I've fucking loved them ever since. They've never made a bad album. They're NOT sell outs.
MatthewCVR goth shit lol
MatthewCVR ha yur funny. Cradle of Filth is not fuckin black metal. Get the hell outta here
The first black metal albums I heard were Darkthrone "Transilvanian Hunger" and Emperor "In The Nightside Eclipse". I hated them both. If it wasn't hardcore in the 90s I wasn't interested. I was wrong.
Ben NG the first black Metal I’ve heard was mercyful fate into the unknown. It’s more of first wave black metal but I heard back when I was in 6th grade. It’s great
the albums that got le into black metal
Hellig Usvart by Horde
Handful of Stars by Drudkh
Sons of Northern Darkness by Immortal
Welcome to Hell by Venom
Bathory by Bathory
Ancient Satantic rituals are crushed into dust by Hortor
the dark hereafter by winterfylleth
kodama by alcest
5:05 for dark incantations being uttered in the background
love celtic frost when I have trouble sleeping I play them and it just relaxes me best sleep of my life
Just discovered the channel, amazing work, man.
I have to thank you for that Tsujder mention because I never heard of that band and its fuckin amazing...
Awesome list btw, I would probably add just a bunch of albums to that:
The dynamic gallery of thoughts - ...and Oceans
Hordalands Doedskvad - Taake
Diadem of 12 stars - WITTR
1184 - Windir
pretty recent albums compare to the classics but I'm kind of new to the genre.
Cradle and dimmu got me into black matal. Great list bro
GREAT FUCKING ALBUMS!!!!
I totally agree with the latest band mentioned... Inquisition!
I dig your Taste. :) its almost the same as mine.
Waaay before i owned all COF Albums i first got into BM in general in 2008 with Cradle's Damnation and a Day Album. I was like: "wow, how evil is that?"
I said to myself...are there more bands like them?
Boy was i in for a wild ride...
I descented pretty fast into the Abyss over the Years:
•1349
•Darkthrone
•Tsjuder
•Watain
•Gorgoroth
•Endstille
•Immortal
•Urgehal
•Mayhem
•Satyricon
•Emperor
and most recently i got into
•Marduk
I don't anything about this stuff, but props for owning all the vinyl.
Fuck yea Immortal, Inquisition, and Darkthrone! Love those black metal bands
Fuck yes Desert Northern Hell! One of my favourites
for me its deathcrush by Mayhem, burzum by burzum and battles in the north by immortal :)
Yep good video and very good black metal bands what got me into black metal was bathory
I assume that you dont know the band "Windir" otherwise it would have been on the list ;)
I bought Venom's Black Metal back in 1985. Love Darkthrone too 💀
fucking great shirt man, oh the video was pretty tight too haha
LOVED seeing Welcome to Hell on this list. What an album!
The songs are killer but the production is fucking shit even for black metal standards, like what the fuck is that drums sound in Witching Hour, Black Metal is way better album.
Inquisition 🔥🤘
Have to agree about Filosofem. That album could definitely be the best black metal album ever recorded.
Orangeokie7 nope
Burzum, honestly, is only famous and reveered because of his history. Otherwise (Filosofem/Det Som...), it's good to very good black metal, but Nothing mind-blowing, IMO....
i started with darkthrone , mayhem and EMPEROR( for me best black metal band )
The album that got me into black metal was Yellow Eyes - Hammer of Night
pure awesomeness
Kudos for Shining :)
Portal, imperial triumphant, antedulivion, abyssal, mitochondrion. I think it's a darker subgenre that is much heavier and true occult members theistic.
Dude that COF record is one of the best eps of all time. I HATE black metal heads that hate on COF their stuff from the 90s was flawless.
Great list! We don't have a lot of overlap in terms of the specific albums that got us into black metal (we definitely share one, "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia"), but pretty much every single album you showed totally destroys... Thanks!
Duuude.. where did you get the Hellhammer hat?
Do you like Sadistik Exekution?
I only love Immortal and Dissection from Black Metal. Storm of the Light's Bane is the best album of all time.
What's in the tank behind you?
Scourge of vinyl what is your favorite mayhem album?
@11:31
我买的第一张黑金属专辑是immortal的sons of northern darkness
Hey Brandon,
what is your opinion about Proto Black Metal from Germany?
early Destruction and Sodom
Thank you so much for this video
Your list is awesome \m/
Christopher Gase Sodom - In The Sign Of Evil and Destruction - Sentence of Death definitely had an influence on the second wave of black metal. I'm a big Sodom fan
You have storm of the lights bane LP????? HOLY FUCKING SHIT, that shit is legit €500 on discogs last time I checked
Fuck yea bro good list mine about the same bands and albums 🤘
excelent video dude, my fisrt meeting with black metal (that I actually like) was Verisäkeet from Moonsorrow.. yeah I know.. 'pagan cult finnish ambiental blacken...' but that album turn me into real deep shit.. so.. it counts at all..
what about the group sinister
No "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk"? And no "Under the sign of hell"?
Also I would have chosen "Hvis lyset tar oss" over "Det som engang var" and "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" over "Deathcrush" anytime. But I guess taste is different.
Eternal Hails by Darkthrone (new)
is an excellent album
Cradle of filth albums principle of evil , dusk and her embrace and cruelty and the beast
Panzer division marduk is the fucking tops i love that record too
Well done. +1 and a sub. Do doom next.
5:11 what the fuck is that whispering?
jody howell ghosts of war
I thought he was truly possessed! hehehe Devil Dogs!
FUCKING LOVE SHINING! Fun thing my mom was friends with niklas mother
Black Metal wouldn't be zhit if it wazn't for theze guyz..and on and on ect.. ect.. Zoooooo fucking amazing influencez from back in the day..that broke that door open ... hailz you fuckerz \m/ from a zizter
abigail williams becoming, you forgot
No Emperor? That's unreal. You severely underrate Mayhem .
It's cool to be into Cradle of Filth but they aren't black metal.
Did I hear a cat? 6:44
Cradle of Filth's Midian was my initial exposure to black metal, near 20 years ago. No shame in v empire at all.
Mayhem though, im sorry i hated dead on vocals, and thats gonna draw a lot of hate. I liked euronymous from dmds, but i think atilla KILLS IT, best they ever had
Dude, Leviathan's TTTW, he admits his was still on drugs and the reason of the sloppiness and such. Its a great album, but for everything leviathan is, you gotta do either Verrator for the best of demos, or The Tenth Sublevel of Suicide for Leviathans all-time best album
I am watching this because of the immortal album he was holding. It is their worst album, and very strange.
Wheres behemeth? For me they are the best black metal band I've heard
I like only the first 3 albums from Cradle Of Filth. I also consider the first one being their only "proper" black metal album. I do dislike the band for trying appeal to the public.
Not really a top ten, just the albums that got mer into black metal. URD, SOND, and Autumn Aurora are the best though
URD by Borknagar
The Dark Hereafter by Winterfylleth
Autumn Aurora by Drudkh
Handful of Stars by Drudkh
Kodama by Alcest
Where the Corpses Sink Forever by Carach Angren
Sons of Northern Darkness
Hellig Usvart by Horde
Arcturian by Arcturus
Ancient Satanic Rituals Are Crushed To Dust by Hortor
Bathory by Bathory
