This does seem all its money doesn't it when you can piece together a fully stainless yaqi for £45 on aliexpress. I've trimmed my razor collection down to just one somehow. I fancy getting a nice heirloom razor to pass down to my son when he's old enough. I live within spitting distance of Sheffield so fancy getting the EJ 3one6, bit spendy at the moment though!
Razor companies are always copying each other and have done throughout the last 100 years. Same with the blades! Gillette got it right and everyone else copied. Great review as always. Happy new year to you and Mrs Parr. 👍🏼
Happy New Year Kevy., Would prefer not to buy from China and at that price would rather spend another few pounds and buy a Henson if I was looking for a lightweight razor.
I'm probably in the minority here, but I like when Yaqi offers copies of great razors. For example, I want a Blackland Vector razor because of its slim head design. Then I look at the price, starting from $220! Don't know about you, Kevy, but for me, this is a very substantial sum of money for a razor. I can't afford a $220 razor when I don't know how it shaves! Even vaguely! I would instead buy a Yaqi Excalibur/Raster copy for a budget price instead of not buying anything. I can't find another similar SE razor with the same head design, which isn't a copy, because of how niche SE razors are. It's a niche market within another niche market called traditional wet shaving. Copies never hurt the original designer/maker because they are in vastly different price categories. Individuals who buy a budget copy rarely even consider buying the original in the first place. Another example is a new release called Yaqi Bohimia. Essentially it's an enlarged french Bohin razor from 1936 made from stainless steel instead of brass like the original. I bought Yaqi Bohimia few days ago. Without Yaqi, I had no other chance of trying a unique french de razor head design because the Bohin razor is long gone. Made only for a short period and rarely came up for sale. Yaqi gives us - shaving enthusiasts in a niche market an option to try great razor designs from the past and present for a budget price. That's why I think they deserve less critique and more admiration.
If your goal was to get one that looks similar then you can get close. But buying a Yaqi razor, thinking it will perform like the original design is like buying a go-cart with a Lamborghini shell: Looks similar but vastly different performance
@@onepassben I never said I was looking to buy Yaqi razor and expect it to give me the same performance as the original design. I knew beforehand it wouldn't be the same, but mechanically it would be very similar. For example, I recently bought Yaqi Excalibur and didn't like it. Because of the slim head design and type of blades it uses. The slim head need to be rinsed very frequently because lather doesn't have enough space to sit on. Otherwise it goes on a handle and it becomes a slippery galore. The baseplate has very tiny openings for lather and hair to escape through. It makes this razor super easy to clog, and you have to rinse it even more frequently - which is very frustrating. Slim head is featherweight. I literally can't feel it in my hand. This feature makes it very hard to control while shaving. Now Artist Club (AC) blades. These thick blades cut my hair worse than thin DE blades. All details above I now know just for $33.55 instead of $220 or $365 for a full package Vector. Now I saved myself from the headache of selling a $220 - $365 razor in used condition for a discounted price. Please, don't tell me I need to pay $220 - $365 to see how the slim head design and AC blades work. See, you are comparing a traditional safety razor to a go-kart or Lamborghini. Even the simplest go-kart is a much more complex than a DE/SE safety razor. Not to mention a Lamborghini. To me, a razor is like a screwdriver bit holder. It's a tool to hold your disposable DE or SE blade. These expensive DE/SE razors only cost this much because they're made on CNC machinery. They're cut piece by piece in a meticulous and lengthy manner. This CNC work makes the razor very precise but not more complex than a die-cast Yaqi razor from a mechanical standpoint.
@@onepassben I agree that there is a world of difference between Yaqi and high-end razors regarding build quality. More price = more build quality. I never will doubt that. I'm just saying that you don't need to buy an expensive razor to see how it functions mechanically. Budget-priced Yaqi functions the same but without superior quality. Then why pay more? The same principle works with cars. Budget Honda would work the same as expensive and quality Lamborghini if you learn to drive or move from point A to B. Why are you so hostile about Yaqi's topic? If your high-end razors shave you the best and you enjoy them. I'm glad for you. I'm interested in the functional aspect of razors instead of the pleasure of using the finest thing.
Let's face it Kevy. This Yaqi razor isn't the first time a safety razor has been pseudo-copied. Compare the Pearl Flexi and the Yaqi TFC with the Rex Ambassador for example. We can bet the Yaqi Sputnik won't be the last copied razor to be released. Besides all that, your review will help folks decide if they want the Yaqi clone. As for me, my New Year's resolution was NOT to buy another safety razor. When I see one that tempts me, I look at my Rockwell 6S and ask myself if any other razor could outperform my favorite. Cheers!
I just re watched your first 2022 video. You used the Yaqi Final Cut Be nice to revisit this and hear your thoughts, maybe compared to the other like razors. I really like and think maybe there’s a missed opportunity. I like the size and weight but feel with slightly better quality materials it could be great. Curious to know your thoughts and if you have used it much ? Might be good as a tag video ?
Blatant rip-off? Absolutely! If someone doesn't have anything like the disposable income to be able to afford a Tatara, or a Hone, but that Yaqi ticks all the boxes and can be their 'high-end' razor, would we be telling them to have a conscience? As you say, what offends one person, someone else sees it as their perfect razor, their Rex Ambassador if you will.
Happy New year Kevy, to you and mrs Kevy. Nice shave. You can really see how they copied the razor though. Course, how many clones out there are of the merker future? Still, looked like it did a nice shave, no cuts or weepers. So thats a win in my book. Have a great rest of the week mate 🍺
It would be interesting to know why there were so many 20th c lawsuits over razors, blades, etc., and now so many copycats. Partly it may be that you can only patent so much. Tatara has, I believe, patents for the Muramasa's adjustable head but not for its dimpled handle. I think I read that. But I'm not 100% sure and, besides, have no idea what is or isn't patentable in razor design. So this one's a puzzle.
You can't go wrong with a bay rum shave imo. Hah what's new always copying in this industry, think I'd stick with my Masamune though. Wish you a Happy New Year too, hope it's a gooden, keep up the awesome content. :)
Kevy, thanks for putting the issue on the table. I don’t think this is Yaqi’s first clone. I don’t think it’s a good thing. Styletto still your favorite aluminum razor?
It is absolutely a good thing from a consumer and economic perspective because it encourages and even forces can't meeting companies to either implement more competitive prices, innovate a superior product or both. It's fundamental to a free open market.
Hopefully someday the market will serve up Yaqi with some of their own cooking. Let the robbers be robbed. Or Yaqi could just become innovators, nah, easier to copy someone else’s homework
@@daveporter6091 the already has done the same to Yaqi, they're just not as successful because Yaqi is willing to make razor thin margins be offering competitive prices, as opposed to charging ridiculous monopolistic prices. but there's plenty of places they have copied yaqi's sagrada familia, for example. And Yaqi has plenty of original designs. Plenty. You really should make sure you understand someone before you try and bash and shame it. This is good for free markets, whether you understand why or not
When you started out with this being controversial, I instantly thought about using Russian products. I guess it was just the blade that was made in Russia. Not that it makes a difference any way. At first it was accidental but then I just couldn't bring myself to using Russian blades. All my Nacet's, Voskhod, Rapira etc. sit unused, I'm happy to say that I don't really miss any of them. There are so many good blades out there I don't need to shave with a Russian blade. Is what Global Shave Club does different than what Yaqi has done because they admit to copying a particular razor?
From the Yaqi site.... Today, customers can benefit from Yaqi M2C(manufacture to customer) business without paying extra money to distributor or worry whether the item you bought is knockoff. ....which it plainly is.... 😂
I just checked the price of that razor and am insulted at the $75 price. Considering it's intellectual property theft, sweatshop labor and aluminum construction that gob smacks me with the hubris.
The Aldi razor 😂 & we all love Aldi they do rip off products ,,I think it’s cheeky but fine you know some people can’t afford 200+ quid for the real McCoy it’s nice to have that out there there’s been shed loads of rip off Merlot futurs out there each to their eown I guess
Maybe a clone but then again almost 200 bones for a hone they was never gonna get me to buy one but 50 for this I might have bought one . My new year sucked ass I broke my leg and could not go out
Guess it's always better to have an original product rather than a copy....is it wrong? Yeah probably...it's a cut throat world. !!!! Oh, wait, no it's not it's not it's DE 🤣
The next thing yaqi makes should be a wet shaving robot/UA-camr with a head design that copied you and a body design that copied Paul H Films. It would then create two new shaving videos each week. It would have no sense of humor, unfortunately (clones have no souls) :( Its accent would be half Scottish and half whatever Paul H films is speaking. Yaqi, are you hearing this?
Nice shave and shave gear, Yaqi makes good brushes and there razors are very reasonably priced and their quality seems to have improved recently. I think Yaqi must have a good machine shop manufacturing their razors. I do not think they make razors in house and just approve a model presented and take a cut or % off the top is my thinking. As for cloning razors any 3 pc razor that Gillette designed originally and uses Gillette standard blade design have somehow copied or infringed on the Gillette design in way or another IMO. As for coping another manufactures original design head or handle I think it has been common over the last 100 years when patents expired or the company has gone bankrupt decades ago. It is strange companies make razors for us users hoping to sell some to regain their initial investment back some how (gamblers). King Gillette or Gillette corporation got sued over their new blade design because they copied Probak razor blade design by Henry Gaisman inventor (Valet Auto strop owner)who proved it in court and was awarded $30million dollars in the 1930's (Huge sum of money for that time period) and Gaisman became Chairman of the board of Gillette. Gillette under Gaisman did stick with the Gillette engineered designed blade we use to this day so coping designs has been on going for some time it seems. theshaveden.com/forums/threads/henry-jacques-gaisman-mastermind.62586/

Let me guess, you’d use warmongering US products instead, eh Thomas?! 🤣
Ordered the razor on January 13, will not arrive until mid February.
Looking forward to seeing it in use in a future video on your channel. Cheers. Kevy 🙂
Oh Noooooo, the copied Blackland Razors foam insert 😂🤣😂
😂😂 Yes...and the Rockwell 6S' square box design!
@@kevyshaves4109 Thanks for the shout out. Yep KY is for Kentucky and still no buys yet 🤣😂🤣
@@daveinky 👏👏
Dave !!!
Yaqi even copied the Hone stand, so no attempt to even hide their inspirations there.
Maybe a clone but then again almost 200 bones for a hone they was never gonna get me to buy one but 50 for this I might have bought one . My new year sucked ass I broke my leg and could not go out
Aww no!! I hope your leg has healed ok. All the best. Kevy 🙂👍
Spotty bottom 😂
Guess it's always better to have an original product rather than a copy....is it wrong? Yeah probably...it's a cut throat world. !!!!
Oh, wait, no it's not it's not it's DE 🤣
😂
The next thing yaqi makes should be a wet shaving robot/UA-camr with a head design that copied you and a body design that copied Paul H Films. It would then create two new shaving videos each week. It would have no sense of humor, unfortunately (clones have no souls) :( Its accent would be half Scottish and half whatever Paul H films is speaking. Yaqi, are you hearing this?
👏😂👏

Amazing knowledge. Thank you for sharing. Much appreciated. Kevy 🙂
