John Virgo made a comment about the players rating the UK Championship second only to the world championship because of the longer matches played throughout the tournament, and I totally agree. Unfortunately, they decided to bin that format, and make it just another run of the mill event. Yes, it may be part of the "Triple Crown" these days, but the tournament simply does not compare to the UK Championships of the past.

Agreed. I don’t rate a UK championship win in the current format as I did when it was 17 and 31 frame matches. The “triple crown” is a figment of the BBC hype project. It means nothing. They overhype todays game as if nothing existed before Hendry and OSullivan.

It means everything to the players who measure themselves on those events. I’ll trust their judgment over yours.

World #2 vs World #5, as Clive Everton mentions about an hour in. Johnson was not just a journeyman who got lucky in 1986, he was a really strong, confident, aggressive, nifty player. Against anyone else at the time but White here, he'd look quick.

Yeah he was but for very little time. 2-3 years and he dropped out of the top rankings. Great player in his day though.

@@johnmc3862 Yes but what a blistering 2 year spell. Two World finals including the title with the most devastating performance in a title match at that time.

This is Jimmy when he was pure excitement just a few too many rushed shots but was a miracle he got where he did in these times considering he was pissed and charlied out of his head every night but that's why we love him

@@davidharris3914 The 1984 World final being a prime example really. I think Jimmy admitted that he had been off his head the night before that first session which effectively cost him the match. I remember Jack Karnham commenting that he was stunned Jimmy didn't beat Steve Davis every time. If he'd been on the straight and narrow in 84, he'd have thrashed Davis in that final and it might have spurred him on to live cleanly and win the majors he should have done.
