Love the video but can’t help but feel like this is the horological equivalent of ripped jeans. You used to rip your jeans by actually going outside, playing, experiencing the youth of life. Superb point Chad and with an excellent illustration re ripped jeans, I was fascinated by by the opening discussion of true tropical dials but this only went on to make undone's artificial patina seem utterly without merit or value, very poor showing and actually smacked of an advertising feature rather than a true review.

Thanks for the review Urban Gentry. Ordered one in Sahara with the stepped bezel in SS. It will replace my Timex at work (I'm a machinist). Haha, very good point and thankfully, yes, the SKX bezel will fade beautifully, the lume will patina and the dial will change color. So wear it in good health. Great to hear from you my friend, it has been a while, I hope you are well. Thank you, Best regards, TGV
indeed it has been a while. hope you are also doing well. I am now a law student, so my free time is exceedingly limited. glad to see the channel flourishing!
Modern lume does not patina like tritium, it just doesn't. Not made out of the same stuff. If you want the aged lume look, buy an old watch, or a new watch that uses lume of a color that replicates aged lume. I recently tried on a Seamaster 300 and can say the aged lume looks just amazing in person.
Hello guys first time commenting here and its going to be a question. Can i have an educated opinion about the Chopard Gran Prix de Monaco Historique Chronograph Titanium/Rose gold. What is a good price for that watch(found it used at 4500 euros),is it worth it as a piece in general, and what are my alternatives for this one.Thank you in advance.
Nice review. I had looked at Undone's website, and wondered about the Tropical series. I didn't know that it was supposed to be faux patina watches. I'm not too enamored with the Undone watches, which is just my taste. But I do like bespoke watches. Check out Revolo. They do a good job, and have automatic movements. No, I am not affiliated with them, I just enjoy their watches.
It's a really cool looking watch, but It is definitely not worth $400 to me. To me the Seiko SNA411 is a much better watch for less money. Even if the SNA411 was $400, it would still be a better buy imo. Btw, isn't the Seiko SNA411 7T62 a hybrid movement too? I also have a question about that Undone, is that movement serviceable?
Man, five years on and The Urban Gentry still is the OG of what’s what. After my Tudor Bronze black bay was lost….. i know I know…. Anyway, I came across the Undone bronze GMT. While not the same prestige, it certainly captures 97% of the Tudor. I hope this doesn’t come across as too negative on the Tudor side. It’s just that undone does a great job capturing the spirit of its older brother.
tgv, I'm a bit confused as to what a fly back constitutes? I always thought it was when the reset button, resets it but the moment you release, it starts again. Is this feature something else?
It simply is for ease of use, as in to save time if you need to record things quick and with more precision and not having to press stop, then reset. It was developed with mechanical movements first and was more complicated then a normal chronograph. I hope that makes sense. Thank you, Best regards, TGV
Thank you TGV. After 10years of stellar service, my Sekonda One (don't laugh) finally gave up. Love the look of the Omega Seamaster 300 165.024 but this is far beyond my means. After watching this video though, I decided to take a look at the Undone Basecamp range. Loved my old Vostok Automatic (pre-Sekonda), so using the Seiko NH35 movement, I'm looking forward to how the Custom Basecamp fares. Great insights on your channel. Thank you for the work you put into them.
Hey TGV. Another great video. Definitely agree, that watch looks much better on a NATO, and looks awesome on your wrist. A definite keeper. I’m on a watch collecting journey and I’ll be sharing that journey so thanks once again for the inspiration to do that.
having a speedy pro, I gotta say, that is an awesome alternative! I am fighting the urge to order one, and I might be losing! Great review! Wish it was a 40mm.
You have a great channel and I enjoy watching your videos from time to time. Now, without passion or prejudice, I have to be honest with you, watches larger than 40mm in diameter look disproportionate on your wrist and the problem gets much worse when you wear them in NATO straps. Your sweet spot seems to be at 37-38mm watches. In many ways you're lucky, take advantage of it! Best regards.
I remember when you reviewed INVICTA, the similarity between sub and 8926 was an con even though it had a seiko movement. But this being awfully similar to speedy is somehow being appreciated? These brands need to come up with some of their own styles rather than copying iconic styles. Aren't we killing the copyright culture by not discouraging these copycat Chinese manufacturers?
Very interesting timepiece, a quartz movement that pretends to be mechanical. This watch is a "Great Pretender" all over 😏. Thank you for showing sir 👍 .
While I love the aesthetics of the tropical, patinated dial, I can't help but look askance at a fake patina of the dial/lume of a new watch. Most of what makes a properly patinated dial desirable is the sheer improbability of the forming of that beautiful patina and its organic nature, and that feeling of wonder is completely missing from a dial that has been consciously designed and produced using modern manufacturing methods. In addition to that, I personally hate having anything "fake" about my watches. That's just my opinion though, and I can certainly understand why someone would opt for the aesthetics of an artificially patinated watch, especially considering the high price of the genuine article. In response to 8:36, I've seen K1 crystal rated at a Vickers hardness of about 650.
Over fifteen years ago I bought a pre-owned Vostok Amphibia for forty bucks. It was reasonably accurate, but the acrylic crystal was heavily scuffed and the bezel was in poor condition. The cost of replacements was less than twenty dollars. The painted dial has developed a fine craquelure and the lume has deteriorated a bit.....I like it. It's authentic.
In the world of guitars this approach has been on the go for ages, you can buy a brand new Fender Stratocaster Standard, or a Fender Stratocaster 'Relic' which is a brand new guitar that Fender have beaten up to look like it's been gigged for years. But you pay a helluva lot more for a Relic model. Bonkers - but there is a big market for this so I suspect there will be a big market in the world of horology too. If people want it then maybe its good that someone is bringing it to market. It's not for me but don't think it's a bad thing
I generally like the style of the watch, but it appears to lack a continuously running seconds hand. The seconds hand is arguably the most important feature of a watch - it lets you know if the watch has stopped running for some reason. No running seconds hand would be a deal killer for me.
You haven't actually said that those watches are based on explorers' watches etc. who have gone and to the - Sahara Desert, the rainforests and jungles for extended periods... That environment has affected the watch and therein is the desirability. To recreate the "well travelled/experienced " watch and person. Did you miss that out deliberately?
From what I can see on their website, they don't seem to do much more than put your initials on the face and engrave the back. A lot of companies in china will do the same and more.
Get a Fossil del Rey for 100 bucks or less and let it age by wear. Same movement, less fake design. The customization options are nice though and i applaud the makers to go for classic looks.
Thank you for a great video! - I'm a bit in doubt about the right sub-dial. The left being the 60 minute timer but the right? 24 hours? can it be reset? - THanks :)
I was thinking of burying my fake Rolex at the beach. It would be a very exciting find for someone with a metal detector (at least for a little while)...
I never knew until now that corroded dials were desirable. They do the same thing with electric guitars lately. I'm so concerned with taking care of the watches and guitars I love, I can't imagine trying to make them look trashed out on purpose. I will never understand it I guess.
Bewildering that damaged goods command a premium. Cannot grasp the attraction, even a bit. Give me new or at least crisp and clean, thanks. Thanks for an intriguing video!
Nice watch. Would have liked higher water resistance. I'm not expecting diver digits, but tool watches should be able to endure more than doing the dishes.
I like what they're doing, but making "vintage" designs that are as big as athletic smartwatches seems off. Why has everyone forgotten that watches used to be small?
This is as bad a case of compromised impartiality as I’ve seen. Just an ad really. Come on Tristiano, treat us subscribers with as much respect as we have for you when you do your best work.
i noticed that you had the sweep second hand always running. is that the way you wear the watch?? i have a Seiko that has a second counter, but i never run the chronograph and have the big sweep second hand run...................should i? ( i like "your" watch. thanks for sharing)
I have their Killy, which I actually got back during their kickstarter campaign. Have pondered adding the "Speedy" and is fond of the Speedmaster look, which is why this Tropical line immediately caught my eye, but, while I like the meca-quartz movement and love the look, I still find it's price kind of high considering I have two similar watches already (also have a Strela "Cosmoswatch") and would just be gaining a steel bezel. That being said, I still have it on my list and may add one after a few more unique picks that I have on my radar.
Their white dial Chrono reminds me very much of the Sinn 910 SRS Flyback. Someday, when I've amassed enough time and wealth, I'd love to attend a reputable school of horology and dabble in making some of my own pieces. Though I have no aptitude for design, a couple of my brothers (an architect and an engineer) have exquisite design influence and execution. I'm sure we can come up with something. Add to that another brother that is a CNC machinist and I think we could come up with some truly unique offerings, even if they are just a few limited runs for our own enjoyment. Your videos have done well to pour a catalyst upon my existing enthusiasm for horology. I hadn't considered getting into collecting until you convinced me that it doesn't need to be a lockbox full of Rolex, Patek, and the like. Simply that the pieces need to be enjoyed. I hope you realize the positive effect you have on an industry and a tradition that needed some real-world love. Health and well-wishes, as always, my friend. Have a great week!
Thanks for the info. I check their site and I can custom my diver ha ha. Unfortunately the body case is kinda limited & not my cup of sake. Maybe one day I ask them when I have the budget he he.
I may be mistaken, but I think that this Undone watch uses the same "mechanical quartz" the new Dan Henry you reviewed recently. They just removed the seconds wheel in order to move the date at the bottom (instead between 4 and 5). That said, which watch is better quality given the substantial price difference?
You are spot on. The difference is in the manufacturing. Undone have their own facilities and are entirely in-house as you see in the video thus the slight price difference. Personally I think the quality is about the same, but due to the DH being smaller (period correct size) it feels higher quality for some reason. But that is just IMO, you could feel differently. Thank you Yordan, Best regards, TGV
@@theurbangentry Thank you for the prompt reply, TGV, I don't have any experience with them "in the flesh", so to speak and this information is very valuable to me. All the best, Yordan
I work in a factory that uses punch presses. We have software meant for inspecting. Last night a guy working the punch press had a punch off by about 40 thousands of an inch. And the tolerance was 30 thousands of an inch. We spent 5 or 6 hours correcting that 10 thousandths of an inch. Would a Chinese company spend that time to correct that small of a tolerance issue? I'd hope yes, perhaps they would. But my experience tells me they would not. When I make a part, it goes through about 6 inspections, 3 of those by computer. Does a Chinese manufacturer go through that sort of quality control? Again my experience says no.
Greetings from iraq ✌️ , please do more reviews of known brand watches under 1000$ , it’s the most watched videos on your channel , please review the orient mako usa 2 it’s a stunner !
Awesome intro!!! Love it. Don't know how you keep outdoing yourself, but you do! Bellissimo. A little off-topic, but where do you recommend I get a leather strap for my new (used) Rolex Explorer 39mm, 20mm lug width? Since you first purchased your Explorer, I quickly fell in love it, soon there after it became my grail, and it's finally arriving tomorrow!! Any advice? I'd like to get two worn leather straps -- one grayish black and one brown. Other than that I'm open! Thanks for all you do TGV!
Feeling a bit embarrassed I didn't know this brand before, even though I am a Hongkonger... Love your review a lot and I did enjoy the intro massively. It made me really homesick. Thanks a lot, TGV!
Have you reviewed Monchard as a brand? I'm interested in their Skytoucher gmt watches, even if the name is a bit funny. Also Oris gmt watches... they're up the food chain a bit with their mechanical movements.
I like the watch but it's a bit too big for my taste. I don't see the need for exhibition caseback on a quartz movement as it reminds me of the skeletonized electronics fad that just irritated me. Wished they made a mechanical version in a tad smaller 40mm size. I do like the strap choice for it though! They are going in the right direction in my opinion.
Interesting video TGV. I do get the feeling though that the target audience for these watches wouldn't know what a tropical dial is. I think undone are sitting on the border between a next step fashion watch and a beginner enthusiast. They do look nice but wouldn't hold my attention for long I feel. The key to making the crossover I feel would be a automatic or manual wind movement but this then would discourage the fashion watch buyer who dosnt care less about the movement. Great video as always.
This is quite a weird marketing idea, with the point that watches suffering from a tropical climate makes it better, when I can remember collectable books being worth nothing if they were coming back from overseas due to the damage they suffered from the damp heat.
Bravo, Excellent treatment, as always. You should write online articles. So, would you say aged watch dials are a good investment, or ticking time bomb?
I like the video and found the advertisements for this watch on Instagram intriguing. Thanks for the review. FYI: I haven't seen any other reviews as I only listen/watch to you and two broke watch snobs consistently. Grazie mille.

I have never seen a quarz see through case back🤣
Grand seiko
You have the Marine Nationale watch strap wrongly attached to your Tudor. Good grief.
Just goes to show, if you can machine incredible copies of big brands, you might as well start a microbrand.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Must resist urge to sleep! Must watch the urban gentry!
Thanks you very much TGV!
Nice video. Greetings from Chile.
Always an pleasure, Fantastic to hear from Gentry in Chile, very cool indeed.
Thank you Francisco,

I dig the expedition caseback on a mecaquartz. Weirdly I like it... Cool watch
That NATO is way too big... how doesn't that drive you crazy?! Lol
Haha, I guess I like it like that.
Thank you for watching Matt,
Best regards,
TGV
Never miss an episode
Get a Fossil del Rey for 100 bucks or less and let it age by wear. Same movement, less fake design. The customization options are nice though and i applaud the makers to go for classic looks.
Thank you for a great video! - I'm a bit in doubt about the right sub-dial. The left being the 60 minute timer but the right? 24 hours? can it be reset? - THanks :)
My offer of crushing fake watches with a huge hydraulic press still stands.
Eric, please email me. Lets make it happen!

I was thinking of burying my fake Rolex at the beach. It would be a very exciting find for someone with a metal detector (at least for a little while)...
Chris Con For a long while actually. Beats bottle caps any day.
Looks great TGV, I have been eyeing a custom Undone watch for a while. This might just be the one.👍😊🇮🇹
Faux vintage!? Hideous!!!
Lol 😂
I like what they're doing, but making "vintage" designs that are as big as athletic smartwatches seems off. Why has everyone forgotten that watches used to be small?
Very true, at least Dan Henry has not forgotten right?!
Thank you Tim,
Best regards,
TGV
Very true, and I applaud him for it!
Very informative... thank you....👍😀... agree with the ripped jeans comment below though....
Nah
I was trying to find an hommage to the speed master but couldn’t find anything looking as good as this.. did I miss anything?
This is as bad a case of compromised impartiality as I’ve seen. Just an ad really. Come on Tristiano, treat us subscribers with as much respect as we have for you when you do your best work.
Question is, how will it look like when real patina starts to naturally set in. I must admit, its a very nice wrist watch.
Nicely tailored.. very TGV.. 😉😃 Any expiry on discount code?
I think the watch looks great. I would be keen to purchase one if it had been 38mm.
i noticed that you had the sweep second hand always running. is that the way you wear the watch?? i have a Seiko that has a second counter, but i never run the chronograph and have the big sweep second hand run...................should i? ( i like "your" watch. thanks for sharing)
I'm assuming he just has it running for the video.
I will wait 50 years to buy a watch once owned by the famous Governor TGV, I started to save money...
Shiny white spanking new date disk just doesn’t go with the rest & just shouts out what it is & isn’t
Does anyone know if you get charged with taxes when buying from them?
I wonder if a watch dial could actually be leathered--with real leather. Eh?
Cracking watch indeed..
This is an interesting concept, but I'm too OCD to wear a watch like this.
OCD?
And another video that made me spend money. Well done TGV. :-)
Thanks for the info. I check their site and I can custom my diver ha ha. Unfortunately the body case is kinda limited & not my cup of sake. Maybe one day I ask them when I have the budget he he.
As pretty as the watch may be chronographs are simply not my thing.
Thank you Yordan,

TGV
@@theurbangentry Thank you for the prompt reply, TGV, I don't have any experience with them "in the flesh", so to speak and this information is very valuable to me.

TGV, want to review my 1979 Omega Seamaster? I remember you mentioned wanting one in one of your older videos. Let me know!
I would love to. Could you please email me: theurbangentry@gmail.com
Thank you so much Enzo for the kind offer.

Absolutely, lots more to come.
Thank you Yasir, great to hear from Gentry in Iraq.
As for the Mako II, already reviewed :D

Awesome intro!!! Love it. Don't know how you keep outdoing yourself, but you do! Bellissimo.
A little off-topic, but where do you recommend I get a leather strap for my new (used) Rolex Explorer 39mm, 20mm lug width? Since you first purchased your Explorer, I quickly fell in love it, soon there after it became my grail, and it's finally arriving tomorrow!! Any advice? I'd like to get two worn leather straps -- one grayish black and one brown. Other than that I'm open! Thanks for all you do TGV!
Is the 24hr dial independent of the main dial? Dual time?
I like their NH35 models because mechanical
IMO buying aged dials is just like buying aged wine.
I wonder what’s patina on the fake patina is going to look like...?
Haha, genius comment!
Very good point.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Feeling a bit embarrassed I didn't know this brand before, even though I am a Hongkonger... Love your review a lot and I did enjoy the intro massively. It made me really homesick. Thanks a lot, TGV!
The word UNDONE so visibly displayed is a put off for me. I'd rather they just use a small logo. And I don't fancy the hybrid quartz they use.
Love your videos. I’m looking for a dressy watch with style. I came across the zodiac olympos automatic. On general What do you think of this brand ?
I like the video and found the advertisements for this watch on Instagram intriguing. Thanks for the review. FYI: I haven't seen any other reviews as I only listen/watch to you and two broke watch snobs consistently. Grazie mille.
Fake patina is stolen valor. You didn't earn it.
