Carl don't beat yourself up over the lid, it turned out nice. I would use the extra rings to remount and finish on the lathe, just a thought. Thanks again for showing us your amazing work.
Thank you so much Mike! I'm not sure if you watched the end of the video, but that's what I did. I remounted the lid, and brought it down a bit. It looks so much better now.
Always love seeing repurposed wood being turned into something beautiful. And as always, I seem to learn something new from every one of your videos. Thank you!
Fantastic project, Carl. As soon as I saw those rings in your lineup I immediately thought about how easy they'd make it to remount or even just to finish the bottom. I enjoyed the long form video, too. Good call on bringing down the lid.
Carl I hope you made your aunt a very nice present from some of the wood from that table top she brought you. Also a very nice video of making a nice little lidded box, even if it was a video advertisement for your new threaded ring sets. Well it worked, when I get my fun money allowance I’ll be ordering some. Cheers, Tom
Loved the video. I am looking for creative approaches to boxes and the steps various turners use to make them. Even though it was on the long side I appreciated the pace of the video. I am new to wood turning and some videos go so fast I have trouble keeping up. I also appreciate the list of tools you included. Very helpful.
Some videos just show someone making a piece, others tell us what they are doing , why , what tools etc . As learner's we find these more interesting. Carl's are very good , there is also a channel called turn a wood bowl . His main purpose is instruction
That wood really has great figure. That must have been a massive piece of furniture to provide blanks that size. Those rings really seem like a great solution to making threaded boxes if one does not have, as Mike Peace calls it, "uranium enriched wood" that lets one chase thread in it. A couple questions: 1) If one over-achieves in making the recess for the insert, how much margin does one have with the epoxy? 2) When hand chasing threads, the top and bottom piece can be made to line up in grain or figure by trimming the piece until the figure lines up when the box is closed. What is the recommended way to to that with these rings? Really enjoyed watching this; saw that you had added those rings and now plan to get some the next time I place an order.
Thank you Mark! The epoxy is pretty thick, so you have a good margin to play with. I would just go slow and take your time. As far as lining up the grain, it's pretty easy. Just put the epoxy on both sides (being careful not to get it on the exposed parts) and simply thread the lid on until the grain lines up. I did an Urn a few weeks ago and lined the grain up on it, and it worked great.
Thank you!! We'll be back down that way for the symposium in March. We bought Niles Bottle Stoppers, and we'll have a booth there. Really looking forward to it! Here's a link, we have them on the Niles website for sale. nilesbottlestoppers.com/product-category/threaded-inserts/
Beautiful lidded box! I was interested in the bronze rings and went to the Niles website and there is a picture of the rings, but no other mention of how to order, price etc.
Thank you very much Rodney! We bought Niles bottle Stoppers, and now have these Bronze inserts for sale on the website. Here's the link, nilesbottlestoppers.com/product-category/threaded-inserts/
Beautiful repurposed wood project. Q: If you want to align the grain of the lid to the base can you screw on the brass lid fitting to the base, apply the epoxy, then push the lid to the position matching the grain? There’s the risk of too much epoxy but could you put a minimal amount on then once dried supplement with CA for strength?
Thank you very much!! You absolutely can do that. We just finished an Urn and did exactly what you're talking about. I didn't use the CA, just epoxy though. I should of mention that in the video!
Thanks you two, i really like that, it turned out lovely….so sorry for late comment but at this time we are load shedding which means 4 hours at a time with no electricity, no signal and no wifi too. Its really awful, fours hours off, four hours on, ten hours a day…..take care you guys, see you soon
Beautiful piece. Great video. I have been asked to make an urn for a friend. This video will help alot. What size rings would you suggest for the opening? I think my friend was about 160 lbs so I'm not really sure what size urn to make.
I'm sorry for your loss! I would go with the 3 1/2" Most funeral homes want the opening fairly large. Here's a link to those, nilesbottlestoppers.com/product/threaded-inserts-for-urns/ Sam Angelo has some great videos on turning Urns and how to calculate the cubic inches they need to be.
Nice video. What is the piece with the mandrel that fit into the headstock that was used before the chuck. I have never seen this particular piece of equipment.
@Carl Jacobson thanks for the info I know your busy so I just bid my time and hoped you would get around to it. And you did thank you I appreciate that.
Carl, that burl turned out beautiful and these bras insert are really cool. Is there somewhere in the UK that these can be purchased from ??. Great job
Thank you very much Alan!! We don't have a retailer in the the UK right now, but we're sending a box over there for a friend later this week. If you email me your number we can take your order over the phone and ship it together. jacobson68@yahoo.com

Very thoughtful of your Aunt to gift you that tabletop! And, what a great reuse idea!
Thank you Erin! My Aunt is a sweetheart!
What is that surface that you used to mix the epoxy and then oil the piece? Did the unused epoxy come off the surface? Thanks for your videos!
That turned out awesome you got the best and in the world
Thank you James!! Yes she's a keeper :)
Enjoyed the video, will have to some threaded inserts for my projects.
Thank you so much Jerry!! They really do give it a nice touch of class, especially if you're making Urns.

Fantastic project, Carl. As soon as I saw those rings in your lineup I immediately thought about how easy they'd make it to remount or even just to finish the bottom. I enjoyed the long form video, too. Good call on bringing down the lid.
Thank you Jay!! They really do make it easy to remount if you need to, or just simply finishing them off.
beautiful recycling, love the threaded rings, Thanks Carl.
Thanks buddy!!

Gorgeous ! Love your work !

Nice work as always Carl! Kudos! I really liked the story with the origin of the teo pieces...
Thank you very much Alex!!
Very neat, much smarter than typical thread chasing, for the warping doesn't tighten it at all.
Thank you!! I think it's a great alternative to chasing threads. When done right, hand chasing can be awesome. Sam Angelo does a great job at it.
Beautiful woodwork, just stunning!
Thank you very much!
Nice job, that looks great
Thank you very much Vern!!
Great video Carl. I stuck with you.
:) Thank you very much!!
gorgeous!!!!! i will have to make more lids!!

Very interesting, thank you sir.

Very beautiful as always ❤. The jaws on the chuck are numbered right? You change them so fast it doesn’t look like you are checking them 😳🤪
Thanks Rick! No need for them to be numbered. They're interchangeable and can go in any slot. It really is a great chuck!
