A day out in Tavua, Fiji, taking photographs, listening to Fijian singing and going to a funeral.

  • Tavua, Fiji was described to me by a friend as a one-horse town. It is dusty, congested and the roads are in awful shape after heavy rains. What could I possibly want to vlog there? asked a friend. I begged to differ. I wanted to interact with people, hear some glorious Fijian singing, take photographs and take whatever else came my way. Life is what you make of it! As it turned out, I also got to experience a moving Fijian funeral (Rest in Peace, the late Adi Laite). This one was fascinating for me to watch for the insight it offered into Fijian (iTaukei) burial customs.

I really appreciate your tenacity to acquire knowledge about a small tiny island in the middle of the pacific ocean haha. I left Fiji in 2009 when I was 6 and haven't been back but your videos fill in the gap that I've been missing out on for years. You really grab every detail in a normal day in Fiji. Keep exploring, keep learning, keep teaching.

I was going to show my dad this video as he was born in Tavua but I doubt he'll recall much. His dad (Ram Swarup RIP) used to run a little engineering shop at the edge of town (going towards Ba) and we'd go to Tavua once every few months to visit family.Think the shop still exists,I can recall it very well from memory, its somewhat opposite Tavua college.I remember also coming here to visit my dad's friend, the late Ratu Ovini Bokini, who was also a government minister at the time.We never explored the town much (we'd come on Sundays and also all the stores were closed)Another great video from you, thanks again and keep safe.

When the chiefs lead with observance of the faith was a difference in the atmosphere and work ethics.
It is an unfortunate trend of leadership has come and the upkeep of many Government infrastructure and assets are on the low. However, the current Government has a top heavy MPs salary structure unaccountability to budgetted funds and is highly in debt.
One can see that Fiji is not peaking to excellence as it should be. But they keep God as their source of strength and protection.
We will not die, although this portion of the country is usually arid.
The region ascending to Nadarivatu to Nadala were forested with Pine trees and other exotic trees like Mahogany Eucalyptus. This have been overharvested.
So Fiji had gold and green gold at one time.
    God bless & stay blessed.
