My first snare, I went into my local drum shop and said I want a tight fat sound like chad Smith. 15 years later that snare is still beautiful. World max copy of a black beauty.
@davewalker3873 I HAVE one of those World Max clones. Bought it brand new from Gary at the old Fork's Drum Closet. Impeccable and amazing craftsmanship!
Thank you someone mentioned it! I’ve been searching and searching for PROPER technique of the rim shot! Not just normal strokes. I’ve really been trying to rework my technique
Exactly! I will never understand why so many drummers destroy their sticks whilst playing rimshots. If you have a loose grip, you get the full sound, good rebound and heads/sticks last forever!
Rimshots are essential in heavy music because they help the snare cut through the rest of the instrumentation, which is important for providing a steady pulse to the music.
I knew that Chad was going to use the word "crack" for the sound of the centered rim shot. That's exactly what word I was thinking from the beginning of his description. It's the word I would have used for sure. I've never seen any other drummer bounce the way Chad does. He's such a cool dude.
When my dad had me start playing drums he purposely flattened out my snare so I'd play rim shots, now its like second nature. But I had no idea about rotating the snare so the rimshot hits in between the lugs, gonna have to make sure I start doing that.
I’ve been doing rimshots for years, whether they’re right or wrong, I’m not fussed because it’s the way I like to play. Somebody told me the other day to “not do rimshots all the time”… I’d like to see them say the same to Chad 😂🤣 Phenomenal drummer!
When I played Rock and fusion I only played regular hits, then I Joined a death metal band as well and now I have to do rimshots which I also have started doing in my rock/punk band.
i’ve been drumming for years, self taught. only recently i realized i’ve been doing it wrong and not using rim shots. i’m basically re learning how to play drums. hopefully this vid helps
I played drums for 20 years before i really practiced and incorporated rimshots. i checked out your live performances, you are a very solid drummer. Playing solid time and serving the music (just like you are doing) is always more important than playing perfect rimshots. In any case I'm sure you will pick it up quickly. Your snare also sounds great miked up, and rimshots aren't as important (in my opinion) unless you're playing in a loud band and need the backbeat to really come thru (especially for recording).
Dude there's no right or wrong there's you got it or you don't got it or you get it or you don't get it but whatever style and feel suits you so be it is there was a right or wrong so to speak everybody would play the exact same way. Part of inspiration is what you do and how you do it. It's like the Chicken and the egg what comes first, can you get inspired and then kill it or do you kill it and get inspired? Maybe both. One thing to remember, always consider the source when it comes to praise and criticism and it's probably best to usually take it with a grain of salt.
Dude imagine if every where you look on every video, every thing you do, it always ends up with comments of you looking like someone else. I'm sure he's heard this shit for years. Must be so annoyed lol.
Chad is not only a very competent drummer, he’s smart enough to know that his association with Will brought him a tremendous amount of notoriety. His fame extends far beyond his being a Red Hot Chile Pepper.
One thing that should be mentioned, if your going to do rim shots, wear hearing protection! You should be wearing ear protection anyway, but specially do it if your going to be doing rim shots because they add so much extra power and volume to your snare hits that they can do some serious damage if your ears are unprotected!
Dumb question, but here goes: Do drummers like Chad play mostly rim shots? Like, if it's a heavyish part of a chili's song, chances are he's using rim shots? Or just take any rock or metal drummers - are most of them playing rim shots pretty much all the time? The reason it's confusing me is partly because the difference between rimshot and normal on an acoustic kit is pretty freaking huge (at least ime). E.g. If you were doing all rimshots and accidentally did one normal hit, it would sound very noticeable. But when Chad showed the difference on this mic'd kit, it wasn't such a big difference. It was more subtle - probably because it's mic'd, I guess? (? miked, miced, minced ...however you spell that lol). I'm just never sure if what I'm hearing is a rimshot or not.
Learn the songs off of bssm. Other albums are good but this was rhcp forst true recording and the first album chad was able to play like himself. Some songs is just a simple beat, some songs the snare backbeat is displaced, and some songs the bass drum pattern is really different and frugal. Check out red hot rhythm method. Thats a great video going over some of those songs.
I can't believe you don't have a cowbell? Its funny, the rim shot doesn't sound much different but when you're sitting on top of that snare man and cracking it it definitely does and it feels different biting into that snare with a perfect shot where an overtone sticks out but not every hit also sometimes I love really getting into the field part and rimshot and even the Tom's coming around and not super hard but with that pull off as you're hitting it tight feel almost like hitting a cymbal. You know what I can't believe that when you're doing a comment and the topic is drums as smart as all this technology is it doesn't spell symbol correctly. Really surprised they haven't figured that one out. Chadley Do-Right u&I play incredibly similar, same school for sure. Same exact setup. Killer performance at the Taylor trib.!
@@markuschelios6891 it’s unfortunate that this is the way civilisation is heading, soon rimshots will be banned, anybody caught playing them will be tagged and the government will be informed. Unfortunately Chad will have to change his technique or face a permanent ban from paying music in a loud aggressive and funky style.
😕 Unfortunately, the audio recording here isn't accurately reproducing the true rim shot sound. Under a normal (live) situation, or when properly recorded in a studio, you can usually hear a _major_ difference in sound between a standard center snare drum hit versus the sound of a rim shot. But it's barely perceptible ^here.
I have always loved Chad's snare sounds.

You unlocked a bunch of mysteries for me on some of Keith moons and Neil Peart sounds! 💗 Great 👌 video 👍!
I repositioned my snare and practice, practice, practice. When I get the right sound and feel it becomes natural.
It took me many years to understand the importance of use the rimshot, its like a secret weapon of pro drummers, now i have to get used to…
Lol. It absolutely is not a pro move.
