Night shift advice, I worked as a student nurse for over a year on nights and what saved me and my mental health was setting alarms on my days off. When I got home from my my shift, I would set my alarm for 1pm so I still had time to enjoy life and go to bed by 11pm on nights I didnt work. The night before a shift I slept as normal and got up around 9a. I would take a 2 hour nap around 3 before work. Once you are on your own, try to do a 3 block. Makes it a little easier. Congrats on starting in the unit!!
The NextGen nclex is coming up soon🥺and I just fail the exam on my second attempt🥺🥺🤦♂️💔,I cannot begin to articulate the level of embarrassment and heartache I'm feeling right now 🤕😣,I'm confident that I will be a good nurse too. I just need to get past this too and move on. 🥺
Just say "I haven't passed yet." Don't take it as a failure but see it as a learning opportunity. There is a lot of power in "Yet"; you are telling yourself that you will get there and that your eyes and heart are still fixed on your goal.
I am a new grad in a level 1 trauma center… I graduated December 2021 and started my residency program in January. The ER is AMAZING… it will take time to adjust and be confident. I started in the ER at 23 with nurses who have been in the ER for as long as I’ve been alive. Don’t doubt yourself or your abilities. You will learn and become so great!
I absolutely love this video! I am also a new grad going into the ER. I appreciate your transparency of how it feels, definitely gives me some relief in the sense that I now know I won’t be the only one feeling this way. You’re actually doing it, congratulations. ❤️ looking forward to seeing more of your ER journey!
From a fellow nurse and permanent night shift worker of 15 years I go to bed late (around midnight) the night before my first night shift and then get up at around 7am. I then go back to bed at midday after having lunch and sleep until approx 430-5pm get up have dinner get ready for work. I feel well rested and only get tired for about 20 mins in the early hours of my shift. Good luck
I am happy for you!! I graduate in December and I did 2 rotations in the same ER, the manager already offered me a position. I know 2 other new grads in the ER, they graduated in May. I think its awesome how new grads don't have to start in Med Surg, we are being accepted everywhere. Best of luck!!
I worked nights for a long time and now work 50/50. I try to sleep until 1 pm at least on days that I work a night shift. My job was a 7 to 7 shift. I would usually try to block my shifts together so I had 3 days in a row where I would be on a night shift schedule. My night shift sleeping schedule was going to bed at 7:30 and waking up at 2:30 - 3. I never really plan anything aside from work on days that I work so if that stretched to 4 or 5 pm that was fine. On the day after my 3 night shifts I would try not to wake up any earlier than 1 pm and if I didn't have anything going on I'd sleep as much as I want. On my days off I would usually get up around 11 ish and go to bed at 3 or 4 am. And to prepare for a night shift I usually would try and stay up later, like until 5 or 6, the night before I went back to work.
Praying for you girlie!! Jesus loves you so so much. You are a going to be a great nurse. You are compassionate, kind, and caring. Everything else will come with experience, don't go too hard on yourself. I am graduating nursing school in December.
It’s so weird to me how little practical focus nursing school seems to have in the US. In Germany nursing school is 50% working at the hospital and we have rotations in different specialties and at different times (like we have to do a certain amount of night shifts). Our final exam also includes a practical portion. I loved working nights but I also am a night owl. One thing to realize is that days where you work are about work and there won’t be much else you do during those days. Give yourself the grace during those days go just work and sleep on days that you work (and that includes the day you come out of Night Shift).
I just found you, I love your vlogs. I am a public health LVN in HTX. I start my transition on Monday and I can’t wait to get it done and get into the hospital setting. Thank you for sharing your perspective! Can’t wait for more and to watch you grow in your career. Just always think of how you would want a nurse to treat your parents. This has kept me grounded! God bless❤
I am still on orientation in the ED on night shift. It gets better and I’m lucky enough that my preceptor does 3 night blocks so it’s easier than having one day off in between. I still get so much anxiety before going in (which they tell me is good because it keeps me humble and a nurse that thinks they know everything is more incline to make a mistake). I still haven’t had a code yet but I’m hoping I get to experience it before being off orientation. Remember that you are going to have really great shifts and really crappy shifts. I have already been punched in the face by a combative patient and get called names by patients at least a couple times a week. We are going to be great ER nurses! My night crew is amazing with helping me do tasks I’m not comfortable with doing or if I am wondering why we are doing a certain task. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! I’m so glad I found your page when I was just a baby nursing student! It feels like we are going through this crazy transition together!
I'd also suggest getting yourself a counselor or therapist that you can build a long term relationship with if you do not already have it. You may not realize how important it is to do this now... and it will help you with the traumatic responses you will have long after the experience has passed. I had to do the same in my career, and I'm glad I had a mentor who suggested I get used to therapy even if I felt like I didn't have anything to talk about. By the time I really needed the person, we had a great relationship built and I wasn't starting in crisis mode.
I also am a new grad RN, I started working around the same time as you! And I’m also doing night shift :) I completely empathize with every single thing that you’re saying! I even worked as a CNA for 4 years in a hospital setting, so I thought I had an upper hand with making my transition as a nurse. In some ways that was true but in most ways I was wrong 😂 in other words, you are not alone!! This is a rough transition for everyone. I’m rooting for you!!
I've worked nights for four years almost at 5 years as a sleep technologist. If you work nights long enough your circadian rhythm WILL transfer to sleeping during the day. Your suprachiasmatic nuclues is overloaded right now... Light therapy is very beneficial
I worked as a registered nurse in pediatric emergency department and it was a struggle for me to adjust. I was exhausted, tired I used to set alarms those days after night shift “day off” so I could feel like I’m living still. But that’s just didn’t work for me long term. I felt sick, i was sick all the time, tired I stopped eating well because my stomach when I eat like in crazy hours it get upset, I lost 5 pounds it was just so crazy. I couldn’t help myself, I loved being at emergency department but sometimes I was working 16 hours a day. I had to quit for my health!
I'm sorry you had to experience that but am happy that you were able to put yourself & your health first! The cliche saying 'you can't help others if you don't help yourself' is so true, especially working in healthcare!
YOU GO GIRL!!!🥳I'm so excited for you; this is such a great career! I'm vicariously living through you until I grauate😂😂You doing the damn thing, though. I wish you nothing but prosperity and overwhelming opportunities for you girlie.
You’re beautiful. And you’re voice is so soothing and I love your mature demeanor. I know my comment isn’t very constructive or even necessary, but I felt like I had to say it anyway.
I just subscribed, I love your videos, they motivate me to keep going with studying and not being bummy. You're really great at life and it's motivating!! Thank u for being awesome so cool and cute and awesome!
Just got accepted to do my senior focus in the ED!!!! 🥳 I originally had my heart set on TICU but they haven’t reached out back. Things happen for a reason though and I’m excited to experience it :)
ER is a very tough place for new nurses to start. ITs not impossible to be successful as a new nurse starting in ER, but its far from easy. Small ER I am in will only hire experienced people with a referral. We have some special challenges where I am at, hence those requirements.
I absolutely love your videos and you in general 😂 I’m starting nursing school soon and my biggest fear is starting IVs. I don’t want to be the nurse that’s terrible at it.. To any nurses, does it get easier or is it always a mystery if you’ll find a vein?
You will get to it. It is easier on some patients, but generally you will get used to it! Trust yourself, trust anatomy and try to focus when doing it!
It's going to take time like anything else but it definitely get easier once you gain confidence & have lots of practice! Soon you'll be doing them without even blinking an eye! Best of luck in nursing school!
yay!! I just finished my 2nd week on nights which completes my new grad orientation of 9 weeks and it has just been such a big adjustment! i always set an alarm for latest 1pm on my days off!😌

I really appreciate ER nurses. They are so tough and willing to help even if it’s three in the morning.
I work nights as a PCT while in school and I love it because I find it to be more chill, and usually I don’t get tired until around 3 am

Hi Sierra! Thank you for your honest update on being a new grad nurse. I love your videos and how genuine you are. 💕
I loved following your nursing journey! I’ve worked nights for the last 38 years, the first 20 years are the hardest, after that it’s a piece of cake!
Excuse me? The first 20 years? Lmao

This was really nice to hear (as a nursing student in my final year) thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I don't usually enjoy nursing vlogs, and day in the life videos for this sector of work but you've nailed it :)
