I saw Rancid in 1995, sober too, n' I got started not even a yr previous. And it was such, SUCH a fun memory. Man we danced. Man, 21. My first car, fresh out USMC.
Things were different back in 82. I was 15 and I decided to buy some clippers and buzz all the hair off my head. The cool thing, at the time, was to have long hair, preferably, in a mullet. So I went the other way and got rid of my mullet hair. It made me a pariah, and I was accosted by strangers and got into several fights. I either got called a "faggot" or a "Nazi" before the fight started. When I got home, my parents grounded me for being a skinhead. I told them that there are no skinheads in our little Oklahoma town of 40,000 people, and that I was just a guy without a mullet. The next day my dad apologized and said that if he had come home with hair like that when he was my age, his dad would have probably raised his allowance. It was like everyone hated me as soon as they saw my hair or lack there of. To this day, I have yet to see a barber. All I need are some shears ;) Peace

So these boneheads started harassing a girl and the biggest dude that ran the party stood up for her and when they got physical he tossed the guy out. So one day they showed up with an entire crew and found the big guy that stood up for her and they took a sledgehammer to his skull. I was not there for that but a good friend of mine told me how he took his shirt off and wrapped it around his head and saved his life. Yes! I did enjoy this when I watched the entire interview! He’s right about the politics and the misnomer of “Skinhead’s” name. They were not really Right-wing, unless you want to designate them far-Right fascists, which might be accurate especially the current Skinheads in Germany now that relish the term “Nazis.” What is great about this story was his reference to his getting stabbed during those drinking-drugging years. I love how he’s telling this story with no grimace at all; about how he his brother’s sewing him up with no anesthesia, the subsequent infection, (he could have died)…well- there’s the pain!!! Hell, the stab wound wouldn’t hurt as much as the sewing it up with a fishing line!!! And, then taking it out!!! lol He tells this so matter-of-factly - just crazy. You gotta love this guy! He so passionate and genuine! I love the way way he talks about his son, too. What a life! Loved the Ramones stories, too. During my 1983 San Francisco one man show, lots of society types were there. Then, a very tall, young guy with long black hair, walked by me and said, “Nice work man.” “Thank you.” John Pence the gallery owner asked me later, “Did you see Johnny Ramone?” I said, “Who?” He said, “Johnny Ramone! ….of the Ramones?” lol “Oh! That’s who that was!” lol It’s a Small world after all.

I too had black girlfriends that were in the scene. I never had any trouble in Berkeley and perhaps it's because Oakland is right there, but in San Fran you'd see Bonehead's pretty frequently. However, with bands like DK playing almost nightly, you had a lot of backing with a shit ton of punks before, during and after gigs. I still use my punk moniker Kid SKAnk and I'm now 58 y/o. It's often losing and winning at the same time. I remember one time when a group, including me beat up some "sieg heiling" douches at a small festival. I got a heavy headbutt, my sunglasses shattered in my face and my spine got injured, so i went the next day into the hospital. But the adrenaline was so high that i felt nothing and they got the same amount of beating back. When they didn't got away, some of my people had enough and pulled out knives. So yea. No one really won or lost at that night.
I had a similar experience at school, Some dude was chasing me and I ran into the corner of a table, got home and realised my ballsack was ripped open so I went and got superglue and glued it together haha. It has worked ever since!
Huh? I'm a little confused here. 1. Why would Lars' mother being Danish have any influence in any way on him having run ins or interactions of any kind with skinheads? I mean maybe if his mom was black and he was a mixed punk or skin, that might be an obvious reason a nazi skin would beef with him. Or how about maybe the fact that he was a punk / sometimes skinhead himself and hanging out in that scene being a A-1 for sure way to run into skinheads, punks, bikers, dope fiends, hesher metal heads etc. 2. He had never heard of super glue working for wounds? You don't need the fishing line. (Unless its real deep or near a vital area them u need ER) you just CLEAN the wound, then hold it shut, then lay a layer of super glue on top of wound and boom done.
From the bowels of Wikipedia..."Minna Dapello [Lars' mother] was a Danish immigrant who was the only member of her family to survive the Nazi occupation of Denmark, but witnessed their murder"
Brother: What happened? Lars: Got stabbed Brother: How did you fix it? Lars: Seriously man'd it out and used fishing line Brother: You're being punched for your idiocy in fivefourthreetwoone 👊🏻
Especially if he'd already glued the wound. Plastic surgeons use a type of superglue to minimize scarring instead of stitches. You only need one or the other. Also, go to the damn hospital, you don't know how deep the stab wound is and could very well bleed out internally.
I remember running into some Neo-Nazis once. And they were pretty cool actually they didn't talk about their beliefs or anything. They shared a blunt with me and we talked about horror movies we liked from the 70s and 80s.
Sorry to say this, cos I love rancid and lars' solo work, but he comes off as a bit of a poser. First the mohawk and that uk 82 with all the spikes and stuff look, and then changed it to the skinhead/casual look with shaved/short hair, checkered shirts and doc martens. And that black wool hat he seems to always be wearing when filmed or photographed. It's a little annoying, tbh.
And in between that he was kind of a biker/Lemmy wannabe. Yes, you go thru phases in life but you cant become a skinhead in your forties and expect to get away with it.
I ran into Lars at the boardwalk in fair oaks when I was a kid and he used me to pick up on a lady trying to pretend he knew how to read peoples minds. I denied everything but she still thought he was funny.
It has always felt like Nazis were more of a thing with the punks than the metalheads, at least here in America. I'm not saying the black/death metal scene doesn't have a few, but its not something I have seen around frequently at metal shows growing up, here in Seattle or around the east coast.
I'm an Anarchist and I ALWAYS carry a knife. Always! Any skinhead who tries pulling a knife on me is going to find out how much I practice (a lot). Buy yourself a good knife that feels comfortable (doesn't need to be expensive, just good for you). Then buy a few plastic training knives, and make sure one of them is similar to your favorite knife. Watch TV while reversing grip and then to normal. Flip it in your hand. Then find a friend and practice with them and your other plastic knife. DON'T BE A VICTIM!!!!
I'm in the U.K and my mates son was telling me he carries a knife. I asked him "do you want to use it?" and his answer was "no".. To me the problem is, if you carry a weapon, you have to want and be prepared to use it fatally first and do the prison time, or you're going to end up dead. Good luck buddy.
Who gives a shit if your a right winger. All that tells me is that you’re slightly uneducated and believe the nonsense you’re constantly told from your leaders and media
Hell yeah Lars. Anyone who is part of the Vegas Punk Rock scene will tell you about me. I have a reputation for beating up Nazis. 13 Nazis have missing teeth because of me. Just like Stiglitz in Inglorious Basterds. True Story. K.O. an 88 24/7!
“You can’t call a Nazi a Skinhead, coz Skinhead starts with Jamaican reggae and Jamaican culture. So basically, we Skinheads are appropriating black culture, and cultural appropriation is modern day colonization, so I guess we’re also in a way perpetuating systemic racism or something… idk wtf I’m talking about. All you need to know is that I’m a really good person because I hate myself, which also makes me love myself because I’m a really good person who acknowledges that I’m a pos white colonizer, but I had a black girlfriend one time and I got stabbed by a Nazi for it, so I have the scar to prove that I’m basically a demigod.”

Yes! I did enjoy this when I watched the entire interview! He’s right about the politics and the misnomer of “Skinhead’s” name. They were not really Right-wing, unless you want to designate them far-Right fascists, which might be accurate especially the current Skinheads in Germany now that relish the term “Nazis.”
What is great about this story was his reference to his getting stabbed during those drinking-drugging years. And, then taking it out!!! lol
He tells this so matter-of-factly - just crazy. You gotta love this guy! He so passionate and genuine! I love the way way he talks about his son, too. What a life! Loved the Ramones stories, too.
During my 1983 San Francisco one man show, lots of society types were there. Then, a very tall, young guy with long black hair, walked by me and said, “Nice work man.”
“Thank you.”
John Pence the gallery owner asked me later, “Did you see Johnny Ramone?”
I said, “Who?”
He said, “Johnny Ramone! ….of the Ramones?”
lol
“Oh! That’s who that was!” lol
It’s a Small world after all.
Get a clue. Lars is fashion. He went from supposed skin to punk to biker back to punk to skin. . I doubt he ever had a real hands on job from what he says. @@BeeRumblin13 musicians are working class. a tiny minority make money out of it (or did, back when people bought records) but most of us fucking starve to create the music our communities exist around. it’s a fucking hard slog, and punk bands pre-mid 90s struggled hard.
not that i’m a lars fan - not really my scene, but the idea that musicians are all fucking rich is a myth, especially these days
Those were the days.
Boneheads (Nazis) in San Francisco in the early 80s? Sounds weird considering the city is associated with hippies, but hey it's still crazy. Seeing Dead Kennedys during their prime must have been a treat.

BTW, cool pics. I'm an Ironworker.
You know whats funny to me is how lars often uses norse imagery in his album covers and tattoos and sports white laces in his doc martens
No matter what side is telling the story, they’ve never lost a fight..
It has worked ever since!
hahah damn
that's why I always carry superglue with me, you never know when your ballsack needs it.

Haha

I mean props to his bro for making him see the infectious light but did he really have to punch the guy to get’m there?
I love when hardcore dudes tell their funny stories that for me or most anyone else would be the worst night of our lives

Brother: How did you fix it?
Lars: Seriously man'd it out and used fishing line
Brother: You're being punched for your idiocy in fivefourthreetwoone 👊🏻
If my brother used my fishing line id clock him too.
Especially if he'd already glued the wound. Plastic surgeons use a type of superglue to minimize scarring instead of stitches. You only need one or the other. Also, go to the damn hospital, you don't know how deep the stab wound is and could very well bleed out internally.

And that black wool hat he seems to always be wearing when filmed or photographed. It's a little annoying, tbh.
