  • How would it sound in your ears if you were told that your most cherished town was one the poorest? Your answer should give you an insight into the feelings of the residents and governments of cities and towns in the United Kingdom that we have identified as one of the poorest in Wales, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, or the entire country. Therefore, we understand that the Welsh residents of the town of Merthyr Tydfil may not conveniently swallow the bitter pills telling their throat that the next of the poorest towns in the UK that we want to discuss now is Merthyr Tydfil. But we are not the ones saying this; please blame the facts and figures on the ground.
    Merthyr Tydfil in Brief
An overview of Merthyr Tydfil might be an ideal place to start from. Of course, we know that we once told you things about this town and you probably remember one or two. Yet, we have so far not devoted any video of this nature entirely to the analysis of its poverty state.
Merthyr Tydfil, also called Merthyr, the name we’ll use more in this video, is a town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough. It’s, in fact, the main town of the borough administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council in Wales. It’s named after Tydfil the daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog. According to legend, Tydfil was murdered by pagans because of her Christian faith. Subsequently, she came to be known as Martyr Tydfil and the name was later corrupted into what it is today.
    Merthyr’s Heyday
Sincerely, the case of Merthyr is pathetic. Centuries ago, it had no reason to be grouped near the poorest towns. Before the industrial revolution, the town was self-sufficient with an economy based on farming and later trading. Shepherds in the town were living comfortably.
Things were going all up for the town in its heyday when it was an important center of coal mining, steelwork, and iron smelting. It used to be one of the vital cogs spinning the wheel of the fast-paced industrial revolution. Limestone, timber, and water were supporting the growth of engineering. Can you believe that this town was home to Cyfarthfa Ironworks, Dowlais Ironworks, Plymouth Ironworks, and Penydarren, the 4 of the greatest ironworks in the world?
At some point, the economic prosperity of Merthyr attracted people such its population rose to a peak of 80,990 in 1911. As far back as 1908, it had been granted county borough status. However, Merthyr's long and varied industrial heritage could not be sustained. Much of the long-established collieries and steel and ironworks bringing prosperity to the town declined in quick succession. We shall get to that later.
    Is Merthyr Tydfil Really Poor?
Are we supposed to be the ones answering that question? Why can’t we just go through the facts together? Not long ago, a reputable research organization, B&Q conducted a poll sampling 2057 adults in the United Kingdom, including 494 of the participants from Wales. Merthyr ranked as the top unemployment blackspot in Britain. A study by Sheffield Hallam University agreed with that.
Another one, the British Household Panel Survey, says the town is one of the unhappiest places to live in the UK due to a lack of basic amenities and necessities. On a Channel 4 league table, our dear town ranked third-worst place to live in the UK. Though it dropped to the 5th position on the table the following year, a corn survey ranked it topmost among the 10 worst regions in the UK for diet, lifestyles, and poor health.
A popular paper journal, Gay Times’ also conducted a study that revealed that men in Merthyr die younger on average than anywhere else in Wales. While the study found that women in the town live longer than men in the town, the Office of National Statistics reports that women in Merthyr die almost two years before women in Cardiff and other cities.
What do all these depict? There are not enough jobs in the town; residents are unhappy because they’re poor; they lack access to medical care because they can’t afford it, and they die younger than residents of many other towns and cities in the UK.

This is how Westminster treat some British people. You’d think only people in London and the South East had died for this country.

When I left Merthyr in 1965 the following factories were providing employment for its hard-working citizens: Hoovers. Teddingtons. ICI. Guest Keen. Thorn Electric. Remploy and others I've forgotten. They were the major employers: they have all gone and very little has replaced them. Therein lies the problem. I am eternally grateful to the Merthyr Borough education system which ensured that I had a first-class education.

@@richardevans7035 That jogged a memory. I think that at one time the factory was Triang Toys? The factory was built circa 1940 as a "shadow factory" for Rotax, London,
that made aircraft magnetos and superchargers for R R Merlin engines. My father, who was originally from West Wales, was transferred there from the London. He told me
that the Rotax, London management went around their Wilsden factory asking the Welsh employees if they would transfer back to Wales. "Yes please" was the answer!

The smallest home in Merthyr measured only 4x7ft during the Industrial revolution even back then the living conditions were terrible.
Some of my family moved there for work and lived there for a short period in the early 20th century before moving back

Ok so the statistics say that Merthyr is one of the poorest towns in the UK but what it lacks in funding and support it makes up for in the quality of the people. I moved here in march 2022 and have found that the people here are the friendliest and kindest people I've ever met and having grown up in Suffolk England I can tell you that there is no comparison.
I found the purple generally aggressive and selfish compared to the kind and generous people of Merthyr.
This is my observation and also I might add that the land is beautiful and rich in diversity. The nature here is beautiful and views are breathtaking. Money and success aren't everything. Happiness and content, love and kindness are more important than financial gain. I love the people here and the town has all I need surrounded by beautiful Brecon and nature rich common land that is full of beautiful animals and flora.

I'm currently thinking of moving to Merthyr, work is offering me a transfer. I'm honestly torn as I have no knowledge of the area and only ever seem to hear the negative opinions and reports of it being "The third worse place to live in the UK". Thank you for sharing a more positive opinion.

@@control4230 honestly I think you would love it here but get to know people so that you don't feel isolated. I've been here 2 years and it's a really friendly happy go lucky vibe here asked the views are amazing also the tap water tastes so clean and the air quality is really good as well so if I had to recommend Merthyr coming from Suffolk id say yes most definitely go for it

I'm an Englishman living in Caerphilly and I love history.
I use to drive for Amazon and my routes would cover most of the Valleys. I would often drive past areas in South Wales and notice something a bit unusual (a man made mound, a steel pole, an old red bricked building etc) and I would make a mental note of the location. I would then get home and then check out old GIS maps from 1880's - 1920's and my god, these areas were THRIVING back then. For example, just check out Dowlais, Rhymney..... So much industry, and the railways!!
I now see these old beautiful building falling apart and think back to the once proud Welshmen who built it. It is such a shame to see it now; modern day, falling into disrepair.
And when I speak to the locals, they are not even aware of what use to be beneath their feet - a forgotten past. I am sorry to the men and women who put there all into these towns, your modern government has let you down.
What happened to all the money from this era? Why was it not reinvested back into the area?

I've lived in Merthyr for about 26yrs , moved up from Cardiff, I love the place. We have problems just like any other place but I would rather be living here than in Cardiff . People in Merthyr are the best you will meet a stranger and they will talk to you like they have been your friend for years. I have worked all over the country from London to Scotland and everywhere in-between and they have nothing on Merthyr don't believe everything you watch or read .

It's too remote. I lived in Cardiff for a while and Merthyr is just logistically impossible to take work to unless someone wanted to build and invest there, but there is no point when Cardiff is so dominant and with superior transport links

Not sure what. if the jobs don't pay enough, most people will stay on benefits. Factories will only offer low paid work or zero hour contracts. But i agree with you. Jobs would help bring back some pride in the town.

The first thing that Merthyr Tydfil desperately needs is a name change. I always thought that Port Talbot was the poorest town in the UK. For my first 6 years in the UK, I was a traveling software consultant and traveled to many UK cities. Port Talbot was by far the worst UK city I've ever visited. I also know NI well as I lived in Belfast for 9 months. Nothing in NI compares with the sheer squalor of Port Talbot!

Lack of a comprehensive strategically developed economic development strategy for Wales (not just Merthyr). Lots of money spent on various bodies since the major steel and coal closures but nothing joining the dots starting at the education system and linking whole value chain leading to well paid career opportunities. Too much vested interests and splitting key elements of economic development value chain amongst often competing or myopic organisations going back decades
