- Russian state media says Moscow’s forces launched the first-ever mass ground drone attack in Ukraine last week. The attack in Donetsk could potentially “open a new chapter in ground-based drone warfare”, Sputnik News reported. During the assault, Russian forces deployed a group of tracked unmanned platforms equipped with AGS-17 automatic grenade launchers. The drones were performing the role of fire support during the attack on the village of Berdychi by suppressing enemy gun placements. But still we have not seen drone swarms yet attacking multiple targets at the same time. Of course the problem is the distribution of the targets among them to avoid that multiple drones hit the same target. In my opinion there are two possible solutions for that:
1. The drones one after another mark the targets with infrared lasers so that the following drone can see which targets are aready marked.
2. The drone swarm produces a kind of cloud in which all drones of the swarm can write and read and so see which targets are marked.
The third possible solution would be the comunication of the drones among them but this would be much more complicated to realize.
Or there could be a mother drone which could mark all the spots and each spot then get assigned by a software 💀

But they could only attack the targets one after another to prevent that some drones elect the same target. And the Ukrainians until now only use drone swarms against single targets.
Some people describe the present war in Europe as Russian invasion of Ukraine. But in doing so, these people are ignoring the cause of this conflict. These people are ignoring the fact that in aiming for Ukraine's membership, NATO has crossed the Russian red line.
President Putin has rightly said that NATO expansionism is an existential issue for Russia. The US didn't like it when the erstwhile USSR deployed missiles in Cuba to match US deployment of missiles in Italy and Turkey. It's the same with Russia. What country would want NATO military bases at its borders?
So enough of this demonizing of President Putin. NATO countries should learn to respect the security concerns of Russia and stop reneging on their categorical assurance of not expanding to the East.
Thirty two NATO countries joining hands in conflict with a non-NATO nation is something which should not be happening in this world. If this continues, there is only one option to pursue. Non-NATO countries should form a similar alliance to create a balance of power to safeguard the continued existence of humanity and the world.

Historic as watching drone v drone combat was, Ukraine smashed the ground drones with their flying FPV’s
These drones will become obsolete as soon as advanced anti-drone systems are perfected.
That will that a long time. Mass production makes anti drone systems expensive and overworked. The old Quantity is a quality line the truth to that statement has never been more profound.
Russia has that already, the only problem is that you can not cover every square inch and if the drone is deployed behind your lines, but Russia is well ahead of everyone atm.
Anti drone will never be perfected. Just like air defense can't be perfected, because the attacker will always try to find to counter the defense system. Plus, human error and technical error can always occur.
These kind of things are a game of cat and mouse. Both will develop to counter each other. It will depend on the side that has the best means to do it.
The problem is that missiles are expensive and only available in limited numbers by air defence systems. On the other hand drones can see the missile coming with their camera and because of their higher maneuverability can maneuver them out.
For this problem I see two solutions:
1. the use of automated guns to shoot the drones down because they can't see the projectiles
2. the use of lasers (especially with laser blasts instead of beams) for this purpose which are faster then missiles and can prevent the drones to maneuvre to avoid the hit.
There is an arms race, seems that Russia found a way to disable Ukrainian drones remotely, Ukrainians removed that vulnerability, but now it happened again... This video showed a drone using a net to capture another drone. I guess that requires to have faster or more maneouverable drone. Can "collective West" mobilize enough good engineers who presumably already have well paid interesting jobs in civilian industry? The face of drone warfare changes like from one month to another.
Russia has all the resources she needs and China as an ally. They keep improving on the modern battlefields with drones etc.
There were only two of these drones. Both lost contact with the command center and got destroyed. So, these are merely test phase weapons. Even serial production is probably months away.
They don't need these with their new batch of turtle tanks.

The first is that drone defense is coming and the second is that OMFV or optionally manned fighting vehicles are also coming. The so called "mass ground drone attack" wasn't much of a success, because the ground drones the Russians used in the attack were easily destroyed by several Ukrainian FPV Kamikaze Drones while a Surveillance Drone the Ukrainians use as well were all caught on video.
To point out, Ground Drones have their limitations as an offensive weapon, the Germans found that out with the Goliath during WW2.
Saw the video too. No way to tell how effective the ground drones were before they were taken out. Not only Russia but the US and Ukraine are also developing UGVs capable of combat. This is just the beginning. Visualize not just one or two UGVs but hundreds coming over the hills all firing with UAV support and deadly ai accuracy. In time, no human soldier can face this with any hope of survivability.

Regardless of the tech, there are several old and new ways to stop a ground drone such as a IED or an ATGM.
@@evilfingers4302 ATGMs seem like overkill for the UGVs shown in the video. And land mines, not IEDs, have generally been used on this battlefield. In any case, Ukrainian soldiers, weapons in hand, did not charge the Russian UGVs, fire upon them, and after some minutes, thereby disable them. It took Ukrainian aerial drones, with operators far away, to destroy the Russian UGVs. Machines against machines. Maybe a time of decreased survivability with these machines has already come.
And, of course, you're right about future advances. But it will be interesting to see the ground drones developed from the intelligence gained from this and other experiences. The speed of Russia's advances in drone technology has been fascinating to watch so far. Beyond imagination in 2022.

The ground drones shown here were taken out during this operation - that's why the footage doesn't go to the end. It is several days old. The clip of both being taken out by Ukrainian drones was shown a few days ago on Kanal 13. Both drones got stuck against blown up Russian armour while trying to pass. On the other hand, Ukraine modified A22 light aircraft to travel 725 miles through Russia (6 hours) without being detected, to hit yet another oil refinery (17th) and a Shahed drone factory. What's air defence doing?
