This was awesome! I can really imagine this music being in the game, if it had a jazz soundtrack. They all fit the areas so well, especially the ones for the Forgotten Crossroads and the City of Tears. They fit the atmosphere so well!
The Cajon is an excellent instrument for almost any kind of music! I've been playing myself since I was about 10 years old. My father has been constructing them since 2012 and has sold over 1000 cajon in that time! I'm glad to see the cajon.
Taking a big risk changing the format but I think it paid off immensely. I love this idea. I'm fairly certain there are some games you could actually change the entire sound track for in-game by using mods or replacing certain game files so your subscribers can play their favorite games with their favorite UA-cam artist's music in the background.
I love the references to the original score in “Thread the Needle” with the descending triplets and an ostinato in “Splashes of Sorrow”. (Also “Thread the Needle” is an absolute perfect name for a flamenco rescoring of Hornet’s theme love it!) I absolutely love all of these, great work!
20:15 - Should've used the input from your dog, man. I would've arrange the barks as huge hits added in the score during the final cycle/phase of the fight! Anyway, great video! Cool challenge about one of my favourite games ever.

i think the forgotten crossroads one you made would suit deepnest a tiny bit better bc it incapsulates the confusion and fear of stumbling upon the labyrinth it is. great vid tho
Honestly, I know you've been getting this a lot, but the concept of rescoring is so unique, almost like building a second soundtrack from the ground up! I definitely appreciate the video too, the ways in which you went into your process, the songs chosen for inspiration and the way you talked about your development process in depth! I can only imagine how long it took to make these four songs because frankly, they're gorgeous! Excellent work all around! Now I can't stop thinking of the City of Tears remade into an underground mid-century metropolis.
This is thrilling, so cool to hear your process. I was skeptical that anything could feel 'right' after listening to the original soundtrack so much but you knocked it out of the park.

This is one of the best pieces of art. I love your dedication, and enriching My Favorite Game's already amazing atmosphere is genuinely so heartwarming. Thank you, InsaneInTheRain.
I really like the energy in Hornet's theme. With how she laughs during the battle, even if she's usually serious and solemn, it's clear that she's enjoying the challenge, at least in the moment. That thrill comes across well!
This is the last thing I expected to wake up to today, Carlos this is AMAZING! This is my absolute favorite game, and I love this is how you started this challenge (assuming you’ll ever do it again). It made my day though, thanks Carlos!
When you said you decided on flamenco-jazz for Hornet, I was like “YES”. Everything that you said about it being a fast aggressive dance, and the fact that she uses string as a weapon (but violin was already banned) felt right!
Carlos, you're a massive inspiration for me as another Filipino! Your talent in music is so awe-inspiring and it's because of your work that I really love jazz and the music of Sinnoh (I did grow up playing it a ton). I just wanted to point out that my favorite track out of this incredible project is probably Lonely Nomad. I just absolutely adore the drums and that slight twinge of horror your composition provides. I kinda want to see more horror jazz because of it XD
I love that your version of the Hornet fight is so much more lighthearted! It still sounds like a battle theme, but really amplifies that sense of the fight being more of a dance, which I feel like hints at the fact that she's ultimately your ally.
Your City of Tears rescore really reminds me of "City of Radiant Ruin" by Yuzo Koshiro from Etrian Odyssey IV. That's a great series for jazzy soundtracks, by the way. I think it's really interesting that two different composers writing for similar settings of "destroyed city" arrived at the same vibe independently.
What a great idea! And it's amazing how well jazz actually works for such an atmospheric game like Hollow Knight. I hope to see more projects like this in the future!
Your versions kind of reminded me of the Soundtrack of a game series called Etrian Odyssey. That OST is also heavily inspired by Jazz and has the same somber, mysterious tone.
I think you absolutely did Hornet’s theme justice, flute lead works SO well and “a dance” really is the right word for it. Since it’s still early game, I think its playfulness still works pretty well!
Man, if you go back to your content from 4-5 years ago and compare to now, it's insane (in the rain) how far your content has come. This was an awesome video.
A game that I would like to see this concept done to is Kof, specifically the stormy saxophone series of tracks. Everyone’s favorite red headed rival iori has consistently had some of the best tunes in the series, and each has a unique flavor of jazz, ranging from a freeform jam to fusion. I’d love to hear a stormy saxophone C (for Carlos)
Holy jeesus your original music is absolutely insane! You have a true knack for developing atmosphere that fits within context this blows my mind honestly, I can't wait to see what stuff you compose! Thank you truly sir
I don't I've ever paid so much attention to a thirty minute video! This was such a unique take on a game's soundtrack, at first I was disappointed to not hear jazzier versions of the game's music, but what you accomplished here is so much more impressive!
I absolutely adore this! Such a fan of this game and jazz, so seeing this got me really excited. Also, are you planning to rescore more areas from the game?
This is fantastic! I was sold the moment I saw the Greenpath footage with your track, and now I have an intense desire to play a Metroidvania with a jazz soundtrack. I hope this inspires somebody!
This entire idea was brilliant. This task is indeed a ‘challenge’ and I think you did extremely well. I am not nearly as talented as you and honestly think you’re a musical god, but if I may zoom out from that a little, I want to give my raw impressions: In Bloom was so fitting, so astounding and so transcendent that I absolutely believed in an alternate reality for a second. You came out of the gate proving this concept is one that not only CAN work, but should absolutely be something tackled again in the future. I really felt something with this one and not just musically, but paired with exploring Greenpath. It didn’t just make me fall in love with the sounds, area and game again, but really opened my ears and heart to the possibility that we’re completely sleeping on writing some of the best songs in the world because we never think to re-write over beloved game songs. I hope you and many others (but mostly you) do these experiments for many fan-favorite OSTs, or maybe even some forgettable ones. Lonely Nomad while a beautiful piece, doesn’t feel like a ‘first level’ theme to me. I could feel it more for some of the southern areas of Hallownest. Not a case of ill-fitting the game, but maybe the pacing. One of the most daunting things about writing, much less RE-writing a game song is accounting for player progression/level design and while I think your other songs nailed their respective time-and-places, this one sticks out a little. I do love it individually though! Straight out of an LA Noire investigation Thread the Needle was a style I would have never expected, but it’s so good, energetic and brimming with personality, that once again, I was taken into an alternate reality where Hornet’s dress was made for this theme. Fast and plucky are the way to go regardless of the rules set to distance from the original track. Wonderful. (God, I love flamenco guitar) City of Tears is my favorite song in the game, favorite song released in 2017 and one of my favorite songs of all time. Distancing myself again, (which was hard for this one) I want to say that... Splashes of Sorrow also indeed took me into another reality playing the game. Less so than Greenpath and Hornet, but the piano part and general Noir city feel work wonders for the area and provoke a lot of questions and feelings. If I use my overthinker pacing critique from earlier, I’d actually argue your song’s feel is more indicative of ‘mid-game central zone’ maybe even moreso than City of Tears with its sweeping epicness. My favorites go In Bloom Thread the Needle Splashes of Sorrow (god I love these titles) then Wandering Nomad If you asked me to point out a weak spot, (god, I know you didn’t and no one else did either, I’m sorry) it would be the battle variants. These songs happen in such contained and sparse moments, that I would personally recommend going a little more crazy. I think In Bloom could have used its own rhythmic change-up with a lot more snare. You went Pikmin 3 battle variant, while I encourage the changes to be full Pikmin 1 battle themes, where they completely shift the instrumentation and mood. The other two area themes had variations I honestly barely even noticed. I heard what was added, but I didn’t really ‘feel’ them in terms of ramping up tension. I love you, you’re a personal hero, I don’t have any leg to stand on here, but when I hear someone is taking on restructuring one of the best soundtracks I can think of and writing their own music over it, I’m gonna have some thoughts. All in all, FANTASTIC WORK, CARLOS! For real, I’ll be listening to these songs you made a million times. You asked which games you want to see tackled? Many, but I’m not over Hollow Knight yet! I would LOVE to see you do Crystal Peak Deepnest (it sounds like you were on the right track with Lonely Nomad) Sealed Vessel Grimm’s 2 battle themes (I REALLY wanna see how you’d take on that) And the Radiance, which, maybe unpopular opinion, I find to be one of the weakest songs in the game, and would love to hear you make a final boss theme. You rule! Always looking forward to the next piece
This might be my favorite thing you've ever uploaded. I loved hearing your thoughts behind each composition, and I loved hearing the finished products. Please keep doing this!

You have a true knack for developing atmosphere that fits within context
this blows my mind honestly, I can't wait to see what stuff you compose! Thank you truly sir
If you're looking for a new challenge, rescoring Banjo & Kazooie would probably be a major Herculean effort
I could make a part 2 or something like that down the line, but for now I’d rather try this approach with other games rather than get super into one!
Carlos I cannot thank you enough for gendering the knight correctly unlike 99% of the people who write about this game
I would love to see you tackle a Sonic the Hedgehog game. Most have fantastic tunes and I would love to see how you add your spin to them
I love hearing all your insights into putting a soundtrack together! Would love to see more content like this from you Carlos!
16:13 this better not awaken anything in me.......🤤🤣
This is fantastic! I was sold the moment I saw the Greenpath footage with your track, and now I have an intense desire to play a Metroidvania with a jazz soundtrack. I hope this inspires somebody!
Yes
I LOVE your work. And Hornet's is absolutely perfect! You gave a little bit more of a beautiful drama for the fight
Man I gotta go play hollow night first hold up
This entire idea was brilliant. This task is indeed a ‘challenge’ and I think you did extremely well. I am not nearly as talented as you and honestly think you’re a musical god, but if I may zoom out from that a little, I want to give my raw impressions:
In Bloom was so fitting, so astounding and so transcendent that I absolutely believed in an alternate reality for a second.
Straight out of an LA Noire investigation
Thread the Needle was a style I would have never expected, but it’s so good, energetic and brimming with personality, that once again, I was taken into an alternate reality where Hornet’s dress was made for this theme. Fast and plucky are the way to go regardless of the rules set to distance from the original track. Wonderful. (God, I love flamenco guitar)
City of Tears is my favorite song in the game, favorite song released in 2017 and one of my favorite songs of all time.
My favorites go
In Bloom
Thread the Needle
Splashes of Sorrow (god I love these titles)
then Wandering Nomad
If you asked me to point out a weak spot, (god, I know you didn’t and no one else did either, I’m sorry) it would be the battle variants.
I would LOVE to see you do
Crystal Peak
Deepnest (it sounds like you were on the right track with Lonely Nomad)
Sealed Vessel
Grimm’s 2 battle themes (I REALLY wanna see how you’d take on that)
And the Radiance, which, maybe unpopular opinion, I find to be one of the weakest songs in the game, and would love to hear you make a final boss theme.
You rule! Always looking forward to the next piece
Amazing video, Hollow Knight has one of my favorite videogame soundtracks of all time and I love what you've done with them!
I DIDN’T REALIZE YOU MADE VIDEOS!!! I love your music and you’re fantastic🥺❤️💙💚
This might be my favorite thing you've ever uploaded.
I loved hearing your thoughts behind each composition, and I loved hearing the finished products. Please keep doing this!
First I thought this would be a jazz transcription of original soundtracks in Hollow Knight, but man this is way beyond my expectation! How talented you are, playing so many instruments in your own compositions. As a great fan of Hollow Knight, I'm glad that youtube algorithm recommended this video. Thank you for sharing your amazing journey!
I was really sceptical about the hornet piece when you said it was flamenco, but it turned out amazing, great work
21:50 actually, Hornet seems to be playing some kind of string instrument in the silksong trailer, so this observation is definitely valid
loved this video. as for suggestions for a next one, i think a non-chiptune take on Lena Raine's Celeste soundtrack would be really interesting!
Take a shot every time he says vibe. As an added challenge, try to play your instrument afterwards!
But seriously glad you guys got the vibe, you put so much effort into your covers, it's _insane!_
I can't believe I was only just recommended this!!
Love your videos, shame this doesn't have more views. Hollow Knight is among my favorite games of all time so I'm glad to say that you killed it here!
incredible! happy to see more of your personality in this video! it's a wonder to hear you talk about your passions, and the wonderful music makes it all that much better! i hope to see more videos like this in the future :D thanks for the consistently amazing content!
i'd love to see you try this with bloodborne or hades!
I AM GOING TO DIE CARLOS THIS GAME HAS BEEN MY HYPERFOCUS FOR THE PAST FEW MONTHS AND HAS BECOME ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE GAMES. I ABSOLUTELY ADORE YOUR MUSIC AND I AM SO SO PUMPED
it's great to hear you talk about your process in writing these tunes. Hearing you explain how you came up with ideas through songs and visuals from the game., has left me inspired to get out there and write my own music. great video!
