To get you started you could check out "Spinning Wheel", "When I Die", or my personal favorite, "Go Down Gamblin'". That's just to get you started tho, there's a lot of great stuff in their catalog. Trust me on this one.

I absolutely second this request. Blood Sweat & Tears are outstanding, in sort of the same vein as Chicago (both were horn based jazz-rock outfits when there were no one else doing this). "Spinning Wheel" is their greatest hit. There's even a cover by the Muppets on Sesame Street. "You Make Me So Very Happy" was their second gigantic worldwide hit. I would suggest you start with lesser hit but equally outstanding "When I Die" or "Lisa Listen To Me'. Their singer, the Canadian David Clayton-Thomas will impress you for sure.

As much as I love this version, Gladys Knight & the Pips version freakin' kills - that drum beat (especially the cymbals in the beginning) - then her powerful voice with the killer backing vocals
Not enough attention is paid to that absolute gem

    The other essentials:
    ARETHA FRANKLIN and OTIS REDDING...
    THE TEMPTATIONS and CURTIS MAYFIELD...
"The King of Soul" himself, JAMES BROWN...
Will you guys be reacting to more classic Blues? If so I highly recommend ALBERT KING's Born Under A Bad Sign.
It's often considered the greatest Blues album of all time.

The early 1960s was really the last time singers mainly sang, players mainly played and writers mainly wrote songs. As a result, it really was the pinnacle of singing. Especially the Motown artists. The singing was superlative.

Do “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” by The Temptations. There is a line that says “All he left us was alone” that as a kid I thought was “All he left us was a loan.” It seemed so unfair that the kids would have to repay the old man’s debt. 😂
