As a proud Detroiter, I'd say you guys gotta get into some more Motown. The Temptations, The Miracles, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Gladys Knight and the Pips...Motown was a great, great hit making machine back in the day. Two of my favorites: "Tears of a Clown" by the Miracles and "Midnight Train to Georgia" by Gladys Knight and the Pips.

Actually the first version I heard was Gladys Knights so I always thought that was the original. Another great take on this song. Nothin beats Marvin Gaye’s version tho.
If you guys ever want to do a great album, do Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”. It helped make political soul more acceptable. Only The Impressions (Curtis Mayfield) did more to open up the genre to deeper meanings.

Agree, but there is so much more to this story other than his father killed him. Marvin was a very troubled man. He was extremely paranoid, a cocaine addict, and had previously attempted suicide. According to Marvin's brother Frankie who held him as he died Marvin said “I got what I wanted….I couldn’t do it myself, so I made him do it.” That's disturbing.

Bill Withers... lots of great songs. One lesser known but brilliant piece was "Soul Shadows" which he did with the Crusaders (their Rhapsody and Blues album is amazing).
How about Al Green "I'm Still In Love With You", Earth Wind and Fire "After The Love is Gone", Teddy Pendergrass "Turn Off The Lights", "Close The Door", or "Love TKO", just for starters.
If you're looking for something a little different, check out Blood, Sweat & Tears. They do a fantastic job of mixing Jazz, Blues, and Rock into their own unique sound. To get you started you could check out "Spinning Wheel", "When I Die", or my personal favorite, "Go Down Gamblin'". That's just to get you started tho, there's a lot of great stuff in their catalog. Trust me on this one.
I absolutely second this request. Blood Sweat & Tears are outstanding, in sort of the same vein as Chicago (both were horn based jazz-rock outfits when there were no one else doing this). "Spinning Wheel" is their greatest hit. There's even a cover by the Muppets on Sesame Street. "You Make Me So Very Happy" was their second gigantic worldwide hit. I would suggest you start with lesser hit but equally outstanding "When I Die" or "Lisa Listen To Me'. Their singer, the Canadian David Clayton-Thomas will impress you for sure.

The early 1960s was really the last time singers mainly sang, players mainly played and writers mainly wrote songs. As a result, it really was the pinnacle of singing. Especially the Motown artists. The singing was superlative.
Great song choice! I was 13 in 1970, so late 60s was the start of my absolute love of music! I had a Jackson 5 "Got To Be There" and The ClassicIV "Traces" on 45rpm. I played both so much the plastic turned white! Every Mothers Son was a great 60s band.
Top 10 record of all time. Easily. Berry Gordy didn't want to release it and neither did Marvin. The finished record sat on a shelf at Motown for 18 months as a result.
Do “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” by The Temptations. There is a line that says “All he left us was alone” that as a kid I thought was “All he left us was a loan.” It seemed so unfair that the kids would have to repay the old man’s debt. 😂

Been trying' to get ANY reactor to do BS&T. My favorite is Lucretia MacEvil, moreso the Reprise--the vocal and trumpet solo are outstanding.

The early 1960s was really the last time singers mainly sang, players mainly played and writers mainly wrote songs. As a result, it really was the pinnacle of singing. Especially the Motown artists. The singing was superlative.

Great song choice! I was 13 in 1970, so late 60s was the start of my absolute love of music! I had a Jackson 5 "Got To Be There" and The ClassicIV "Traces" on 45rpm. I played both so much the plastic turned white! Every Mothers Son was a great 60s band.
Top 10 record of all time. Easily. Berry Gordy didn't want to release it and neither did Marvin. The finished record sat on a shelf at Motown for 18 months as a result.

Do “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” by The Temptations. There is a line that says “All he left us was alone” that as a kid I thought was “All he left us was a loan.” It seemed so unfair that the kids would have to repay the old man’s debt. 😂
