    Hey, it's been about a week since I bought this game, and I've finished it. I'm glad I saw this video, because I loved this game. It really did leave an impact on me, kind of like when you finish reading a book you're deeply invested in. I even remembered to come back and look for the spoiler video! It's a really nice game, I bought it two years ago because it was on sale and never played it, but one day I was so bored I booted up the game and I'm so glad I did it, because it was the only thing I played that week, and I enjoyed every minute of it, I still have to play through the dlc, but I encourage everyone to buy it, it's on sale right now and the price is basically a steal for what you are getting out of this game!

    • @jurefranceskin3176

      Play through the dlc. It's just as good as the main game, if not better.

    • @monkeywithocd
      @monkeywithocd 4 роки тому +3

      The DLC isn't as good as the main game, but it's still good. I mainly just missed the level of existential quandaries present in the main game, as the DLC leans a bit heavier on humor and just existing in the world instead of thinking about it. Honestly I'm worried about how I've heard talk that they're going to make a sequel, as I can't really see them capturing that same level of thought provocation again. I would love to be proven wrong, though.
      Edit: Oh, and the stars are *required* for the good ending which is BS. Not all of them, but I think you need all but two IIRC. Had to cheat for a number of them, which is something I hated doing in The Talos Principle.

    I tried convincing literally all of my friends to play this game. No one has done it. It's the best game I've ever played, it touched me, made me think, and I had found it one night while aimlessly searching steam. Never thought to consider the aspect of loneliness as a part of the game. It really is just something that keeps on giving, and I wish everyone would just play this fucking game.

      @@2kliksphilip That sounds about right, which is why I gave up mostly, but not entirely. I get why you can only keep poking at people so much, but they just don't understand what they are missing. I had a friend who was bored enough to drop some money on the game, after literally two years of telling them to get it. He messed me after only a few hours in the game with "Talos is fucking aggravating and addicting I love it". I have another friend who I managed to scam a promise of him to try it, and I can't wait for his reaction. I feel like a god damn missionary for this game, but it's really not just a game, it's an introspective and beautiful experience. The game speaks for itself, but you spoke for it anyways, and I appreciate that a lot. Keep up the great work brother

    The Talos Principle was my nightmare for years. It was one of the games that got me into philosophy, to understand humanity better. It was where my life changed and i saw everything with a different light, how beautiful is the world and the things we have are wonderful.
    Truly, listening to Alexandra's tapes, reading the memories of the humans that appear to be gone for years and years is just heartbreaking but at the same time so fucking beautiful.
    It really gives you hope in what the darkness took away in the first place. Never stopped playing and finished the game in 2 days in the summer of 2016, truly changed my life, i still highly suggest it to everyone to experience it, because honestly there's, atleast not for me, anything like it.

  • @DJprDPr0
    @DJprDPr0 4 роки тому +6

    10:32 "I'm not the only person who was left profoundly moved by it"
    I think the loneliness aspect of the game is exactly why it's so beautiful, you mindlessly listen to God while doing your puzzles and getting hints of communication around you (QR codes). You start seeking social interaction because of the scarcity of the interaction. You slowly begin searching for knowledge, meaning, history about all of it and in turn, you start asking questions.
    I played it years ago, it made me feel like I was inside the game, living the story. I never thought twice whenever I read hours of writing on a computer terminal, or having conversations with it. Every single interaction was perfect. Nothing felt like a game.
    To whomever reads this and hasn't tried it, I know it sounds absurd. But I really can't stop suggesting you try it, it really is something special.

    Talos Principle is one of those games that I was so invested in that I finished them on one morning in my pyjamas. I just wanted to do one more level before breakfast, but then I finished ALL of it, that's how much fun it was. Actually, was it really "fun"? I mean, the puzzles definitely were, but the story is just soulcrushing and genuinely made me feel bad at times. It was definitely a game that hooked me from day 1. The beautiful environments, the wonderful music, the atmosphere... it makes me nostalgic for a place I never visited. I'd love to live in that world. It's so gorgeous.
    What a fantastic game, absolutely brilliant.

    The Talos Principle is the kind of masterpiece that you can't stop thinking about when you've just finished it, then you forget about it completely, and then when you're reminded of its existence you suddenly get the incredible urge to boot up again.
    I've completed the game and the DLC, I remember being obsessed by them, but now I barely remember any of it. Which is good, because that gives me an excuse to replay it. This is different from Portal 2 and Deus Ex, which although I played them longer ago, I still remember the vague bigger picture of. Because of this, I don't think I would enjoy replaying them as much, even though I played them for days on end, hours at a time.
    I love this game so much.

I also suggest you play the DLC 'Road to Gehenna' as it's really, really good (and a lot of content, especially for the price!) I'm so glad you did a video on this, spreading the awareness about how awesome this game is, it's truly an underrated gem!

    The extremely vague descriptions are exactly how I feel about the game, and I really wanted to tell others about it. The Talos Principal has one of those stories that I consider by far one of my favourites, and it looks like you too experienced that. Looking at the comments, I'm also super glad others are buying the game and get to experience it for themselves for the first time. Just stick with it, it pays off at the end.
    Oh, do you have a more accurate ETA for the spoiler video? I'd love to see it, but if it goes unlisted (at least without another announcement video or some such), I feel like I'll miss it completely. I agree. Don't get me wrong I absolutely love the Portals, but this game is just that little bit better. The way they encourage to "break the game" to get some of those stars is incredibly crafted and rewarding. Portal is missing this extra thing to satisfy your desire to take the game mechanics to the extreme to exploit the level design as much as possible.

    • @dan_
      @dan_ 4 роки тому +2

      I love The Talos Principle, and while some of the puzzles do rival, if not exceed the quality of the best bits of either Portal, I remember getting a bit cheesed off from time to time with TTP, in a way I never did with Portal. The story of TTP is what makes it arguably better than Portal overall though. I haven't played Portal for so long now, but I seem to remember them being really short. TTP gives you much more content as well I feel.

    Thank you so much for recommending this game, Philip! I bought and played it after watching this video and it is, indeed, the best game I've ever seen in terms of plot and storytelling. I found myself spending hours digging through the various levels to discover all secrets, collected all logs I could find, and even translated the hex strings to ascii with the help of an OCR tool. I knew I could probably find all that information somewhere online but I was so engrossed in the game that I didn't want to pull away from it until the very end - managed to log nearly 40 hours in the span of 3 days. I'll leave the more detailed commentary for the follow-up video but I'll say that The Talos Principle, to me, truly reveals what distinguishes video games from other artistic mediums.

It's really difficult to talk about it without running the risk of ruining the experience to some degree, like you said. I played the Talos Principle back in summer of 2018, and i got a lot out of it. It was an incredible experience.
    But what's interesting is that I didn't enjoy it for the reasons you explained in this video. Don't get me wrong, i was well in to the story, achieved all of the endings and the curiousity that the game's storyline brought me in the later sections was brilliant. But for me, the puzzle's designs and balanced learning curve which the game had to offer, were what made it special. Even more so, a lot of the solutions and secrets, made me feel like I was finding my own solution to the problem. The boundaries for the puzzles were used very cleverly. I couldn't get over how some solutions to a puzzle required objects from different parts of the map. The best example I can give is how the game treated the lasers. They were probably my favourite puzzle mechanic and I believe were really use to their full potential, which is something which is hard to come by in a lot of puzzle games.
    Either way, I'd definitely reccomend this game to those who are interested in puzzlers.
    And also, I'd love to see you do more of these videos. With games, I am usually stubborn to try new titles and experiences, and I love these types of videos which are just somebody talking about how great a game is. It helps convince me to try new things, and it would be nice to see more of these from you. Obviously, I'd already played through this long before seeing this video, but your video on hexcells got me playing something I though I never would. Keep it up!
    Side Note: The Truman Show is my all-time favourite film.

    • @kalebroark87
      @kalebroark87 4 роки тому

      The lasers and cross-puzzle stuff were brilliant when they were used properly, but there were a few too many BS "find the hidden laser reflector" or "place the thing within two pixels of this spot or nothing lines up" sorts of puzzles. That and the clunky, out of place platforming challenges really kept this game from being a 10/10 imo. I played fairly near release though, so it's possible some of those issues aren't as glaring as they were then. Still a damn good puzzle game.

      @@kalebroark87 I do agree with that, I can recall a couple moments in the game which weren't very fair or balanced. Although, I guess you could say this game is slightly less refined than other puzzle titles out there. But my memories of it are mostly positive, so the good must have definitely outshone the bad with this one.
      And yeah totally, that's exactly what I was getting at. (Response to second reply)
