Making a Tie Dye Leather Wallet
In 2010 I figured out a way to get a tie dye effect on leather, so we decided to make a tie dye leather wallet by hand. The tie dye effect is made by floating leather dyes in water without mixing, so that when you dip the leather into the dyes a tie dye effect is achieved.
On top of the tie dyed leather, we used presses to die cut our wallet pieces for this wallet. Die cutting is a good way to make lots of pieces in a super accurate and fast way when you need to produce lots of things all at the same time. We die cut some of our stock leather products, and that allows us to hand sew and hand finish the piees while keeping the cost down to customers. Weaver's presses make that very efficient, as we do not need to buy expensive hydraulic presses or use any electricity. They also have very low maintenance, which means a lot more work time and a lot less down time waiting for things to be fixed!
This is honestly such a cool technique I would have never guessed you could do such a dye job on leather. I love your stickers on your tool set.
Wow, this video made me remember a multi colored wallet I had in the 1970s, it wasn't terribly well stitched but the leather colors and embossing were beautiful. It was evidently made in another country. I bought it either at a headshot or one of all these small craft and import shops that used to exist back then. The late sixties and parts of the seventies eras where people valued hand made items. Thank you for inspiring me to revisit really pleasant memories from my hippish teen years. Good times. ✌️☮️
Check out marbling technique for adding color also. You should be able to float leather dye on Carrageenan if you want more control over the patterns. If you want, that is.
May I ask how the technique?
Very cool dye technique! Thanks for showing!
I've been watching lots of dye videos and its hilarious how few crafters wear gloves when dying 🤣 I'm guilty
Lol i was just thinking the same thing. I get questioned alot about my brown and orange fingertips
This tie-dye is so pretty!
I would love a step by step of this dye process since I have tried it several times to only get spots of dye onto the leather.
Did you ever figure this out? I've gone through 3 bottles of dye and can only get spotted, splotchy results. I tried hot water, soapy water, added salt. No dice
@@PickledAmericano I did figure it out. First you have to use an alcohol based stain. Then there is a mix ratio sweet spot. Shallow pan , small amount of water.
But really I didn’t like the result as the color leached off the leather for days.
Yet another amazing project. It’s almost like every time I’m amazed by your work you take it up a notch. Great Job!
hope yall are doing well... you deserve it... tyfs
I know nothing about leatherwork and there is no explanation of how, this effect is created.
My assumption is the dyes are oil based and then poured into pan of water?????
Very cool look. I've never seen leather look like this.
WOW TRULY GIFTED WITH SUCH AMAZING TALENT I LOVE IT, THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS FANTASTIC VIDEO, I REALLY ENJOYED IT
This marble effect is absolutly stunning ! Cant wait to try
You always do such interesting and amazing work, I love your channel.
Beautiful dye effect there, can’t wait to try this on a holster project!
Totally amazing effect! Can't wait to try this for myself. Thank you for sharing your technique.
That is the best lookin' wallet I have ever seen!
This is, incredibly. Soothing.
Wow, looks like grunge fabric. That's amazing
I would need to make a video of me standing up to aplaud your work! I began not long ago to work with leather and thanks to your videos, I love even more to do so, 'cause I want to be as good as you. As soon as it's possible for me, I'll buy this pattern to support you.
Just one question, is the dye stable? Really worry if the colours will transfer to clothes or other items. Very beautiful work tho!
Very cool. Would never have thought too tie-dye leather. Thanks for the idea.
I like the 8 ton press and the wallet jigs
Just saw this one today and I currently have a piece of veg tan drying out with half golden brown and half black pro dyes, can't wait to see what it looks like when it's done!
This looks so nice! I only wish you had done the tie dye leather on the inside too and used black stitching instead of white, but aside from my two cents this looks awesome
Wow! I’m always really impressed with you guys but this... this is AWESOME!! Very cool. Yeah, that gum trag really does nicely. Weaver has been my favorite for years as well.
My favorite video so far. 👍
Wow! What an effect. Definitely going to have to try that out. Great demonstration, cant wait to see what other colors work out well.
Carved from stone! Also loved the touch of humor for the sponsor
Woaaaaahh this looks wild
Trabajo de un verdadero maestro!
love hand stitching... another mauvelous tut/vid... giving this a go... tyfs...
Love the look.
Que hermosa pieza, los tonos combinados son perfectos.
La felicito saludos desde Cancun Quintana Roo México
That’s pretty cool I’d love to have a holster like that
It's been a long time, would you tell me if the tie dye of the wallet faded please?
That's cute how your wife helps you. I hope I can get there someday with my girlfriend! BTW amazing work!!! Congrats!!!
Oh my, this is amazing. So much great inspiration from this channel.
Stoked on your new clicker press! Cool die technique too!
I always enjoy watching your videos. I tried this today on some small scraps and it came out looking like one color. I didn't mix the water. Maybe I left the leather in to long. Maybe not enough dye. You got any tips?
It’s so Satisfying to watch! Great job done .
You're amazing at your job, I hope I learn to be like you someday.
Is it weird that I got really really excited to hear a new video came out? No? Ok.
Thanks for the sneak peak at your shop! I never knew you could marble like that, would’ve thought the colors would blend and everything be purple. Did you have to pre-treat your leather with something?
Wow can we do the same thing to shoes ?that will be amazing!
5:23 MY IMMERSION!!!! jk love these videos.. wish my left ear loved it the same way... kinda feels forgotten.
Just beautiful
Beautiful work! Thank you for sharing!!!
I've watched this a few time and love it... are you using warm?hot water?how much water to dye
Beautiful wallet!
Is there a reason why you finished with gum trag over the dye vs. Carnuba cream or bag kote or some other finish?
just personal preference! I like using gum trag and canvas because it brings out a nice little patina in the un-dyed sections of leather
@@Corter I have tokonole and not gum trag. Are they different?. I never knew you could do the outside of the leather. Just knew it was for slicking edges.
Can always tell a high class shop with Supreme-Craftsman branded storage units! 😜😂😜. Great video, as always!!!!
Idk how I got to this channel because I would never make anything like this but it came out dope asf
glad you liked it!
Leather marbling ... clever!
Beautiful wallet! Love your videos, just starting out and I'm learning a lot from you guys. Cheers!
That looks awesome!
I can’t get mine to even come to looking like that. Pro dye and water? What am I missing?
Absolutely, awesome !
When I try this the colour is barely there
What a great idea, thanks for sharing!
Beautiful
That is a super neat technique. Makes a great looking wallet.
Weaver is your new sponsor? I thought so when I saw you using their products. Most of their stuff is top notch and they have great pricing. Above all they sell excellent leather. So far I haven't had to send anything back.
Me encanta preciosa cartera
very cool!
Could you use this same process for a leather item (which is already dyed), like an old purse, to tie dye it or would you have to use a different process.
Great stuff!!!
Is there a certain grade of veg tan that you are using? I have tried this process on several pieces ranging from a craftsman level to a superior level and CANNOT for the life of me get anywhere close to the marble effect shown. :( I have also tried pre-treating with neatsfoot oil (which I do for my normal dyeing) down to no pre-treatment of any kind and the dye just rolls off. Any insight would be much appreciated!
I’ve been trying for days to do this only to have the pro dye roll right off the leather. It isn’t sticking at all. Are you still trying to do this?
i love the colours and random pattern like hydrography. but i didn't like the big holes of the stitching. cheers!
I'm a Chinese fan. I've been following you for a long time. It's a pleasure to watch your channel. I try to make some leather goods myself, but I'm distressed because I can't find the right drawings. I'm grateful if you can tell me where you are searching for the drawings.
So awesome!
nice work can i ask about leather thichness did you use ¡
Hi! Love the tie-dye! So I'm going to be teaching a leather working class at our Homeschool co-op next spring but I have to teach basics in only 2 classes. Would you ever consider selling your wallet pieces pre-cut but not sewn so the kids could assemble and sew them together?
Tandy leather sells things like that! both specifically for kids and for adults depending on how old the kids at the co-op are!
You are great. I like your all videos. Thanks for sharing.
Good Morning! Please, what liquid do you use to put the paints? use water at what temperature? I really like your work and your classes, they are very useful and very well explained! thank you so much for teaching!
Enjoyed every second of your video, thanks
Хорошая работа мне понравилось .👍
Perfect flawless work. May I know why you do not use the vise when you are sewing?
What he applied while polishing?? What is that white thing? A glue or what?
Way too cool.
Super amazing...
Lovely effect, I’ve tried this technique once before and found the dye came off. Do you find that the dye comes off? I notice you use Gum Trag on the front, but how do you guarantee it stays and won’t run off the inside?
Holy schnikes! That looks frickin awesome!
Great job.
Quedo fantastica!!
Really really great work !! Badass !!
thank you!
Hola, me gustaría saber que tipo de colorantes usa para mezclar con el agua y teñir los cueros? Sus trabajos son muy originales y hermosos.
Creative
hello, can you tell me which type of glue do you use please ? thank ypu so much
Precioso!!..
Podrías decirme que hiciste con el restante de la tinta?
La puedes volver a utilizar?. Gracias. 😃
Thanks for sharing! Is this done using cold water?
You can use this same method using acrylic paints for paper, clay pots, etc. How would this work wfor th paints on leather?
So I attempted this with Febings pro oil dye... The end product looks okay but it dryed and left a powdery substance all over. The rough side is like straight powder.
Fantastic!
I'm curious what the gum trag is for.... anything besides giving the colors more saturation? Never seen it used on anything but edges and raw backs. Then again I'm a newbie lol
Mind to make a video of your stitching method ?
did you need filter on the water before drop color sir ?
That's is one of the best 'coloured' looking wallets I have ever seen.
That is AWESOME ! Are you mixing Fiebings Pro Dye with water or something else since Pro dye is alcohol based?
Thanks! Just water, the key is to not mix it and just pour in different spots. It'll float in the water and create the marbling effect, you can also get a softer effect with oil-based dyes
I have achieved some success in the Tie Dye, used to much water first time. What brand stitching chisels do you use ? I didn't see them in the weaver catalog? Thanks, Steve
Very, very nice!
What a neat idea :)
Awesome wallet I’ve been using weaver leather supply’s stuff for a while but I need some dies like those any idea as to where I can pick some up at?? Thank you
that was magick .
You see a new image in it everytime I've seen a mountain, volcano and a stag ,unless its cos I'm hella high
it definitely is cuz u're high
