Weaned off my baby from nipple shield at 7 months. Tried to wean her off from day 10. It was veey challenging, as my DD was using it as a dummy and not sucking properly. At time I cried alot as I wanted to exclusively breastfeed. Used breast pumps to keep up the supply and exclusively breastfed for 6 months. At 7 months she started breastfeeding normally. So all ladies here, yes you can....
@@pramirez3 Hi, actually nothing was working out for us. Finally, I was at a stage I had to give up on pumping. So instead of pumping I tried feeding her with milk full breast. And also we started co-sleeping at that time. I think that helped me alot. Try feeding baby at night, they may latch while sleepy. Wish you all the best.
This makes me feel a lot better. My 3mo old is still struggling and it’s been really hard. It’s a challenge to go out in public because we have to use a shield.

Dear Kassi, I am coming back with a topic suggestion. Few days back my baby stopped breast feeding for over 30 hrs. I did some research and thought that might be a so called nursing strike. And I was so frustrated during this time.. at the end it went well and she started latching again but it was nerve wracking. Maybe you can give some useful tips to overcome this highly frustrating issue. Looks like there are so many things that happens so you never can say ‚oh I figured everything out now‘ with a little baby, 😅☺️ Love from Germany!
I was told in the hospital that my nipples are too small to breastfeed. He’s now 8 weeks and was pressured into formula at the hospital. I’m struggling to keep my milk supply even though I am trying to breastfeed with the guard!
For me it’s cause apparently my nipples are “flat.” They’re not as pointy as other people’s breast, which I did not know… I was pressured into formula too. They acted like they were trying to work with me to help me breastfeed her, but they knew damn well that she would prefer the formula because she would get it easily. She’s currently a month old and I’ve been pumping and using formula and recently, I restarted using the shield cause I think it’s better to breastfeed with it than not breastfeeding at all.
My Baby is almost four months old and since birth I have been using the shield. I have tried a lot at the beginning to remove the shield and consulted experts but they said she is not ready and I should Sait. I tried later but still she is ressistant. I want to ask if using shield extends the duration of breastfeeding sessions, because our sessions are so lenghty considering her month. Thank you for your help.
Im using nipple shield because of my flat nipple .now my baby do not feed using my nipple .she wants to feed only with shield ..is it good or bad..pls give me advice
I used nipple shield until baby 2 weeks old, but now my baby is 5.5 months old and having a fever and flu he wanted to use nipple shield again. Without nipple shield he refuse the breast and cry aloud. Hope when my baby getting better he want dbf without nipple shield again🙏
This is normal for babies to have a harder time breastfeeding when there are sick. I hope he recovered quickly. Were you able to stop using the shield again?
1. Be patient. Work with baby and don't let her get too fristerated. Use nipple shield if she's overly hungry and fussy. 2. Use skin to skin to encourage latching without sheild. It wakes up her reflexes. Be ready for it to take weeks or months. 3. Start to feed her when shes showing early signs of hunger. If shes crying and already hungry, she wont be patient enough to practice without the sheild. 4. Take nipple sheild off midway during feeding when she's no longer super hungry. But if she gets fussy and frustrated, put it back on and try again next time. 5. Focus on deep latch to stimulate her sucking reflex. Nipple sheilds really overstimulate the roof of their mouth so they find it difficult to latch on breast without deep latch 6. Use supple cups or breast pump to try to pull out nipple if its flat or inverted or short 7. Put a little expressed milk on skin around nipple to try to motivate baby to encourage sucking. If latched, try to insert syringe in corner of mouth with some milk to encourage sucking 8. Stay calm, talk to baby in encouraging voice. If youre stressed baby will also get stressed. If youre getting frustrated, stop and use sheild until later
I am struggling half the feeding. My baby starts offf without the nipple shield but half way refuses to continue and wants the nipple shield. I don’t understand why. Help please 😩
That is very interesting. I am wondering if your son is preferring a faster flow at the start of nursing. Hard for me to tell what could be causing him to prefer the nipple shield half way through a feed, but you may find it helpful to have a lactation consultant observe a feeding for you
Hi Morgan. That is a great question. There are a number of things that could be going on, if it is the first 24-48 hours, gagging and being spitty is a normal thing that babies do as they work on clearing out amniotic fluid from their bellies. If you are a few days or weeks out and this is still happening, I would work with a lactation consultant to see if they can help you determine the cause. It could be your baby is still trying to accommodate your tissue/ deep latch, milk flow, or perhaps a fast let down.
Hi! If it is working for you and your baby is gaining weight and has good output, there is no problem in continuing to use the shield. If you are interested in weaning from the shield, watch this video for tips or try working with a lactation consultant to give you individualized help as needed. Have a beautiful day and congratulations on your baby.
@@sowmyatj8865 Some babies get full after one side, if you offer your baby the second side, and he/she is too full to eat from the second side, just start on that side for the next feeding.
Should the shield only be used temporarily? I’m having trouble getting my baby to latch without the shield. She initially was great at latching but then began refusing my breast all together. Now with the shield she latches with no problem.
Hi Arielle, it can be really challenging to wean form a shield. We usually recommend it as a short term tool, as it can negatively affect your supply and some people find it frustrating to use as well. But there are people that end up using it long term and as long as it works for you and your baby is growing and healthy, that's ok.
I have an 8 week old that we have been using a nipple shield on. We started it because the lactation consultant thought he had a high palate and possible lie tie. I’ve been working on getting a deep latch for weeks without the shield but was still having issues. So Today we had a minor lip tie snipped. I’ve watched your video on the deep latch, and he still seems to Not get enough breast tissue in his mouth. Any tips?
It can be tricky to get enough breast tissue into baby's mouth with a nipple shield, and as you work on weaning from the shield, a deep latch is especially important. I have a video on deep latch technique that you may find helpful. I really hope the procedure turns out to be helpful for your little one and am so glad you are working with a lactation consultant :)
My baby now 3 months and half and he still feeding with the Nipple shield he was born by one month early , and he a good eating with the nipple shield just take him 7 mins with one breast to done feeding and his weight was going up good but now when I started to try feeding him without the nipple shield he will latch for 2 mins then stop and then I wear the nipple shield again but he would not take it either and not even half hour and he hungry again and he not the same since I try this and I noticed that his diaper is sometimes dry what to do 💔💔
Do you have any body workers or chiropractors who work with infants or speech therapists in your area? Sometimes that can help with clamping issues. You may also consider working with a lactation consultant virtually. 💜
