Skunk in a Box!

  • Lollipop the striped skunk loves to search and find her food, just like a skunk would in the wild. By providing Behavioral Enrichment, or BE, we are stimulating one, if not all five of her senses. The treats in a box stimulates her sense of smell, taste, and touch. It also makes her use her mental and physical capabilities to solve the situation she's in. We don't just give her treats in a box, we sometimes hide her entire diet in various boxes, blankets, paper, and other items. She loves to spend her time searching for just one more morsel of food. In the wild skunks spend all night smelling out and digging up their meals. We do our best to mimic their natural behaviors in captivity. You can see how excited she gets with the box diving behavior! Don't worry she's not starving, and she's not overweight, she just really really loves her food!

    Reminds me of the skunk I saw in our housing development a couple years ago. Had its head firmly wedged in a yogurt cup - obviously someone's trash had been raided - and just could not seem to get enough purchase to pull the stupid thing off its head. One of my brave neighbors was already approaching; she grabbed the cup, gave a real quick little tug, and jumped well back as it came free. Skunk didn't even care, just shook itself off and trotted away. So long as they don't feel threatened, skunks are so very calm (at least the ones in my wooded area) it's awesome to watch them.

      Plus, as Jessi has explained before, their first thought isn't going to be to spray anything that scares them. They give a bunch of warning signals to scare away animals before resorting to their spray. As long as you respect the warnings, you shouldn't get sprayed.

    I have a pet skunk (legal in my state if purchased from a licensed breeder), and this is EXACTLY her reaction to food! She's about a year old now and needs more challenge than just a box. She's mastered several puzzle feeders for dogs/cats, and I'm facing the constant challenge of keeping her stimulated!

    Oh man, I want a pet skunk sooo bad. There is something so cool about having a native animal as a pet and esp. one that is so smart and is able to blend in so well with house life.

    Don't worry, she is not starving nor underweight. She's also not overweight which is a really big concern with skunks and has to be constantly monitored. Skunks just really, really love their food, as you can see Lollipop demonstrating in the video. Since they gobble their food so fast we have to provide behavioral enrichment so they have to search for each piece like they would in the wild.

    This reminds me of feeding my dog from kongs and puzzle feeders! He will always go back to them throughout the day, hoping to find more food!

    I knew of a family friend who also "de-skunked" an abandoned baby skunk and brought it home, its like a big fluffy cat, sleeps with them and everything. Haha.

    Hahahahaha that's funny. Skunks are so smart. My friend feed the skunk and raccoon by his house. It's always the same raccoon and skunk that come to his house and eat together.

    1. Cut a hole in a box.
    2. Put your skunk in that box.
    3. Make her open the box.
    And that's the way you do it.

    can you do another video with this guy? He/She seems really cool. I'd be interested to know more about how and why skunks spray, also if you've been sprayed? Her backstory would be interesting too

  • @tahroo4262
    @tahroo4262 10 років тому +5

    I see it's been asked, but not answered.. do you have her scent glands drained out regularly while you have her or is she used to people so much that she hasn't ever sprayed?

    • @Warruuna
      @Warruuna 10 років тому +6

      In a Sci-Show Talk Show, Jessi said that they did remove the scent glands. It is similar to neutering a dog.

  • @culwin
    @culwin 10 років тому

    You should try burying her food in a pile of dirt.
    The wild ones in the backyard act the same way when they find a grub or whatever. They go crazy tearing up the ground to get it.
    Skunks are great, they pretty much ignore people unless they feel threatened.

    What kind of enclosure do you keep Lollipop in when you aren't personally engaging her?

    • @kristenle1141
      @kristenle1141 9 років тому

      Kristen Degener We've seen Chili Pepper and Kemosabe's enclosures in videos already, as well as part of the enclosures that held the bettongs and foxes, but we've not seen Lollipop's.
