This one always gets a laugh.

Honestly, I preferred the trippy dreamlike moments of improbability described in the book and shown in the 1981 BBC tv adaptation, where it looks like they’re at beach of Southend England only the sea stay steady as a rock while the buildings wash up and down, Arthur loses his legs and left arm and Ford turns into a penguin. This was a missed opportunity to use CGI for a scene like that.

Well I disagree. If you expected the film to be made exactly the same as the television show that preceeded it by almost 25 years, then you were always going to be disappointed. Plus it would've been slammed as it wouldn't have tired to do anything new and stuck with how the tv series was made.
And anyway, you shouldn't be comparing it to the television series, you should be comparing it to the original book. And in that respect, it was good.

I've seen the TVseries and I do think it's a little better, but I also think the movie did a very good job at not only bringing the vision to the big screen but also adapting the series into something that is acceptable for general audiences. although i think they could have done a little better with the dialog, but if it was a direct adaptation then it wouldn't be for everyone

The Hitchhiker's Guide is a comedy. The big problem with the film was that it failed to understand most of the humour, and thus wasn't very funny. Therefore it pretty much failed at what was most important. Judging something like Hitchhiker's based purely on its visuals is very odd, that's not really what it's about.

@bimmjim I disagree. I was disappointed at the adaptation of Deep Thought also, but it did everything else much better. The sense of an alien (if you'll pardon the pun) and unfamiliar setting came across much better than in the television show, which just seemed like a cheap sixth form production of the book that dragged on far too long. The actors in the film were also so much better than those in the tv series.

Mr. Steal Yo Girl the Heart of Gold is basically a ship that can (with the improbability drive) can go at infinite speeds, arriving at literally any destination instantantly, whether it would be the nearest planet or the nearest galactic supercluster. The reason why you see random things when the ship arrives at a destination is because it just went through multiple different dimensions/realities.

The TV series was much better than this more recent movie version. This version really screwed up the part about the turning on ceremony of the computer called Deep Thought.
