This video walks you through how to replace an oil tank filter for your oil-fired boiler or furnace. This procedure will be the same or very similar on most oil tanks that feed an oil-fired burner on a furnace or boiler. This filter is usually changed as part of your yearly furnace \ boiler burner maintenance. It is recommended to change this filter at least once per year.

At 3:40 you say that you have to go bleed the burner. I have never needed to bleed my burner. All I do is open the tank valve all the way, check for leaks, then open that small screw that you had your thumb on earlier. All the air will bleed out and when oil starts spilling over, then I tighten that little screw and I'm done. My oil filter set up is a bit different than yours, but I assume that's what that little nut is for. Also, my filter replacement kit comes with three washers. The big one for the container, the mid size one for the main screw, and a tiny one for the bleeder.

Bleed at the filter not the burner.

What about the round red gasket that comes with the filter?

Great vid. I've never cleaned the oil filter to my outside vented kerosene heater, and it won't start even though I have a little oil in the tank from last year. So....

FYI, the fiber filter you removed is a 1 micron filter, the wool one that you installed is a 10 micron filter.

      What does that mean?
The one he used for replacement will let more sludge through?
Is the one he removed more efficient cleaner?
      Thank You!

Yes. The 5 micron filter will filter out smaller particles! It will also clog faster and should be changed every year, at least My original comment.was a typo, should read 5 micron, no 1 micron.

Even with my tank valve turned "off", there is still a considerable stream of fuel. Makes me move along quickly.

Next time you do it try hitting the top of the firomatic wheel with a wrench to make sure it's down all the way and it should slow down or stop

If you have a furnace oil leak or spill, use Petro Buster to clean it up and remove the smell along with the stains. It works fast, is non toxic bio degradable soap developed for this purpose. PetroBuster.ca

Is it necessary to add oil to the filter before you put it together?

The oil that came out was cystal clear. Do you use an additive? Also is your tank in a warm dry erea.

What do you do when it's an underground tank? Then there is no positive flow. Then what? I'm still cold.

You could dump it back into your tank if you'd like, or add it to your waste oil when you drop it off at AutoZone from your oil changes.

Appreciate you getting some information out there but the camera view was really bad. Half of a view of the inside and so close you almost couldn’t make out the objet or angle. Maybe slow down some and consider the camera shot will help much better. Oh yes and the two small red gaskets should be replaced along with the new rubber gasket. Thanks for the effort .

Aren't you supposed to put a little oil on the new gasket?

    • @10AGLIA

No need it, if don’t let the container spin when you tied up. Ppl do that on the cars oil filter to avoid crack on the gasket if the cars doesn’t run for a wile.
