Thank goodness I found this video! I'm trying to make a scarf and I basically doubled my stitches and couldn't for the life of me work out how.. Well! Clearly I'm doing all these things! Thank you!
I was chuckling the whole video coz you're summarising my knitting headaches 😂 also another reason for an extra stitch to happened is that the stitch's ply just started unravelling/splitting on its own mid knitting and then suddenly you (or atleast i did 🤣) gotta knit an extra stitch.
Yes, so true about the yarn splitting! I've come up with a couple of other reasons too, since filming this - I think another video is calling - 'why is your knitting getting wider, part 2!' Hope you're on track again, happy knitting!
oh my gosh, I can't believe this. It makes so much sense. Ive been making these mistakes the whole time wow. No wonder I started with 60 ish stitches and ended up with 83 ....
Oh Hannah thank you so much I was getting in a right tizzy I just couldn’t understand what I was doing wrong gathering those extra stitches now that I have watched your excellent video tutorial I’m happy to continue to learn how to knit 🧶 I was ready to give up and throw my knitting into a dark corner never to be seen again lol but I’m ready to try again. Thank you for sharing your skill you are an excellent teacher.🙏🙏💐
I started knitting about a week ago. Very therapeutic, fun to do with my daughter and wife. Currently I have the movement somewhat down, but what started as a 22 has now grown into a beautiful 63.. no holes though haha. Thank you for explaining why my scarfs are looking like diapers or loincloths. Love the videos and the in-depth explanations.
There's another potential for creating a stitch as well. On the first stitch of a row if you pull the wool to back by going 'over the top' of the needle instead of a sort of down and right direction it pulls the loop of the stitch across the needle and it looks like 2 stitches instead of 1. I know I've done that before and gained a stitch. 🙈🤦🏼♀️
Thank you for this video! I am knitting a beanie, ribbed hat, with 4 mm 16 inch circular needle. I counted the stitches and found additional ones. 😂 Should I continue with k2 p2 for 11 inches high, rather than decrease the number of stitches on the row? Thank you for any help Hannah.
@@alexandracarr2537 decreasing or not will depend on how many rows you’ve done already and how many accidental ones you’ve made. The stitches are quite small so won’t notice so much, but if the k2, p2 becomes k3 or p3 in too many places it might appear awkward. What’s the stats?
@@KnitWithHannah honestly Hannah, your video was so much on point. And made me aware how I was actually increasing the loops. Loved the explanation..Thanks
Ty I needed this bc me and my mom couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong I started with 10 ended up with 36 so I decided to search and thank goodness I found ur video tysm! (Ty=thank you Tysm=thank you so much Bc=because)
Yay! so glad this was helpful. So funny to have read this without noticing the abbreviations, I've never been much of a texter but the knitting jargon seems to stand me in good stead for it. 😃(I got it all right!) Happy knitting 🧶
This has helped me realise where I might be going wrong and where stitches may be coming from! But how do we reverse this and get back to the number of stitches we had in the beginning? X
If it’s only 1 or 2 increasing, you can do a k2tog over the next couple of rows. Or if it’s more you may need to take it back a few rows or unravel and start over. Here’s the k2tog tutorial: ua-cam.com/video/78HQIS-RYE0/v-deo.html And there more support in fixing bigger mistakes in this beginners course, over on the Knit With Hannah Academy academy.knitwithhannah.Co.uk/the-masterful-knitter
I wanna make a sock. I tired to learn from others they Don't show step by step and its not working am an beginner and i love your technique of knitting am making a scarf as well from your technique. My question is can you make a video from step by step showing all figures on how to make a sock please?
Hi Ashley, With sock knitting, while I know all the techniques I've not actually knitted them myself. I will be investigating more and adding that to my list as I do get asked for this a lot. As for the scarf, I have two videos about stitches tension - tighter and looser knitting: ua-cam.com/video/Y2E2xxVZaOw/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/KdTChjHjkwo/v-deo.html hope that helps! happy knitting!
Ok i really would love to learn the knitting the socks if you have any suggestions on videos that teaches beginner's step by step please let me know and yes this helps thanks 😘
these are very helpful. my issue is that the two needles get further and further apart while i knit, with a very long piece of yarn between the needles. it doesn't start off that way; it extends as i knit and i can't figure out why
It sounds like the stitches are too far from the tips - that can happen if the knitting needles are much thicker, due to the tips thinning earlier and causing stitches to drop from them more often. Do you feel that perhaps that might be happening? Happy knitting 🧶
That’s a whole other video. Generally, you’d need to unravel to the point that you made an extra stitch. As a beginner I’d not suggest that. Keep knitting and see this as a practice piece, once you see improvement and understand how the stitches are made and see fewer mistakes, cast off and start over. You’ll see that just a few inches of knitting can make a big difference. Happy knitting 🧶
Im at 3x the stitches I started with before I found this video, hahaha! Is there any way to fix it? Can i start reducing the stitches somehow? Or is this project just gonna get wider the more I mess up? I'm running out of room on my needle, SOS!
Hi Cat, if I were you I’d cast off and start over - keep this piece of knitting so you can look back and see how far you’ve come. You’re not the only one to have this happen, it will get easier on we time. Here’s the cast off video: ua-cam.com/video/3pKVKM7V5W8/v-deo.html Happy knitting 🧶

2 ply yarn is probably the biggest culprit!
Yep, the thinnest yarns can have problems with tension and missing/mistaking stitches. Happy knitting 🧶
Yesterday I'm sure I've started out with 25 stiches and now I have 29!
That’s not a bad start - I’ve seen more increases! Happy knitting 🧶
