  • In our nineteenth AME Podcast, we continue our quest to serve artistic excellence through a conversation with Art Himmelberger, retired public and collegiate music educator, band director, performer, band historian, and community band conductor. At two years old, Art was brought by his father to a community band to listen. Fascinated with what he heard, Art began learning to become a drummer and played in that same community band at age nine. His dedication to music can be seen through many years of high school, honor, and community bands even having the opportunity to learn from William Revelli at the University of Michigan. Art moved onto the teaching world at the public-school level, then through the military via the West Point Band, and finally in higher education at Marist College where he finished 38 years of service. For Art, band is what he knows best and music teaching is not a job, rather it is a way of life! Through his connection of band, Art also has interest in band history especially since the bands he performed with had history on the walls all around him. Every town use to have a band and even today tax dollars are still used to fund community bands. Bands have a way for people to get away from their normal life because music is part of their persona. Today Art still provides music making at the community band level because of his passion, organization, and focus on a mission. He strives to provide success for musicians because he cares for their connection. Art’s motto is be yourself and be engaged because it is not my band, but it is our band!
