The new con70s are significantly better, but I still use con40s on all my Pilot pens. I do keep at least 20 pens inked or so and I like to change inks often, so they smaller ink capacity is actually a plus in my particular situation.
I have both, but for some unknown reason, I always choose my Sailor 1911… it might sounds weird, but I love the feeling and the feedback of my Sailor nib.
The only Lamy I use on a regular is my 2K🧡. The Safari is an iconic look but I do not own one. I suspect I think it looks a bit childish with that horrible paper clip attached. I have three All-Stars. I occasionally use one for sentimental reasons. I’m sure the Twisbi is a great pen. Both are great as gift pens to FP beginners. If I were to purchase either of them now, I would definitely like to try the Twsbi Swipe.
I love these videos and Brian and Drew you do a spontaneous magical session everytime! Kudos to you. I got a Pilot Custom 823 in Broad and it glides over paper, is butterfly smooth! Have a TWSBI 580 ALR Broad too bit for the price is surely worth the money!
I took out the little metal cage and shaker ball bearings and now the con-40 works great. I wasn’t getting any ink to the feed before. Now, no ink starvation. And super easy to clean it between inks. 🖋🤷♀️❤️
I use both brands, lines Pilot 742/743 and sailor 1911/ProGear. I prefer Sailors, because (my subjective feeling) Pilot nibs are delicate and Sailor more substantial in my relatively heavy hand. I never checked real mechanical properties, Sailor Imperial with MF is my favorite daily writer.
Sailor Pro Gear Slim is my favorite pen. That said, I own plenty of Pilot pens and like them as well. Sailor just has a better nib for my style of writing.
I'd hate to walk into a B&M store and have Drew 'serve' me... I just know if he was that way inclined it could cost me 10x what I had intended to spend ....🤣 🤣 I've worked with / for a couple of people like that many years ago, it's kind of magical how easy they make it look.... I have a Custom 74, one day I'll get me a Sailor 🙂
There is no question that the 1911 is better. Beautiful nib, nice weight and girth. The 1911 is for people who want a upgrade from the 74. A better comparison would be the 1911 vs the 743.
I ended up getting a Custom 743 from Japan rather than a Custom 74, because not everyone likes a transparent pen body. That’s the only thing that makes me dislike the Custom 74. That said the nib is so nice.
I eyedroppered my Pilot Custom 74- it worked! I eyedroppered my Sailor 1911 Grain of Rice pen- big fail. I eyedroppered my TSWBI Swipes- success! I cannot eyedropper my Lamy Safaris b/c of the barrel slots.
Please answer this question for me. Why my pilot custom 74 doesn't write under its own weight? How can I make it write under its own weight? I have tried to spread the tines a little, but it still doesn't do what I want. Besides that, it is a wonderful, smooth pen.
Many factors could be at play here. The first things to try would be cleaning your pen thoroughly and swapping your ink. After that, you could consider reaching out to who you bought if from, if it's a newer pen. Alternatively, you could engage the services of a nib technician. - Drew
Just got myself a new Custom 74 and I am having the same issue as you right now! I have bought many more Sailors and never had a single issue with those...
@@cameronolson4553 I bought mine from Japan. Maybe you also bought it from Japan. I have realised that the japanese market pens write a little bit drier. I fixed mine by taking out the nib. Then, I widened the slit between the tines slightly and very carefully. Now it writes under its own weight. It is perfect now.
OMG! I was watching this at night, while everyone is in bed, and and trying not to laugh out loud while snorting and covering my face to hold it in. Both Brian and Drew had the best repartee. Priceless! And the points were spot on as well. One important point that sold me on buying the Swipe was that it uses both long and short international cartridges. TWSBI nibs are somewhat more consistent, including the Swipe, and mine works wonderfully in reverse so I get two nib points in one. The biggest downside to the Swipe is it's not very good looking and feels cheap; the Safari wins for looks and durability for sure. I'm definitely a Pilot fangirl. The Sailors do look pretty, but they seem too expensive for what you get.
I like both Twsbi and Lamy but I think the Lamy Safari wipes the floor with the Swipe if you're going more for function than novelty. It has a working clip, a better grip and an easily swappable nib. If you're going for novelty, Twisbi swipe might be the winner because of all the attachments that comes with it and it honestly looks better. Like from a functional standpoint, I think the higher ink capacity is its only advantage but that has never been an issue to me because I like changing inks.
I’ll easily pick the Sailor, though I prefer and only own the 1911L, not the 1911S. I think the C74 just alright, with a pretty decent nib. But I like the 1911’s design and all round appearance and certainly the nib a lot more. I would have a harder time deciding between the 1911S and the Platinum 3776 Century, which is another classic that the C74 is often compared to. If all these three were contesting, I’d pick the Platinum 3776. But the 1911L would trump them all.
Safari vs ECO is a better battle IMO. I like the quirkiness and reliability of the safari (my first fountain pen, have 10ish pens now lol) whereas I find the swipe unattractive when I could get an ECO for a lil more
OOf, Pilot vs Sailor. I have a Pilot Custom 845, 743, 912, 92, black E95s, maroon E95s, 4 Preras and a Metropolitan. When I need to write something, I reach for one of my Sailors, every time, haha. I have a smaller collection of Sailors, a KoP, 1911 Large, 1911 standard, murdered out black Pro Gear, Pro Gear slim, Pro Gear slim mini and a vintage Sailor (looks identical to the Pilot 95s) I just love the Sailor feedback, the feel of the nib on paper. Feels and sounds like you're writing with a pencil, it makes me smile everytime. Now, Pilot make a fantastic pen, don't get me wrong. The 845 is an utter joy, but it's almost like it's a little too smooth. There's something about Sailor. And they make all kind of fun editions. My ambition is to have them all.
I love em both, unique on their own terms and being available(though for a price) are appreciations we need in a hobby. objectively better though? all the cheaper steel nibs actually work like you'd expect a fountain pen to be, on both sides. Sailor needs to bring the profit casual to add to the full line of nib size option in steel nibs at the very least to make a punch above, but Pilot and Platinum, also limit their stuff in the steel nibs part like giving options are expensive in all the brands, so... I'm willing to let the price issue slide, for what is essentially, objectively, picky purchase option available to be chosen for the worse value😂
I do like some feedback on some of my pens it gives a tactile feel that let's you know you're not writing with a digital stylus on a cellphone or computer tablet.
I got a legitimate question for one of you 2, and for anybody in the comments who would like to chime in. I have a Sailor 1911 L with a hard medium nib. My wife is getting me the Lamy 2000 that I’ve been wanting for the last three or four months for my birthday that’s coming up and I really like the line width I get with my sailor hard medium, but I’m not sure which Lamy 2000 nib size I should go with. To my understanding they can run a little wider than what most everybody may be used to and I have no idea which way I should go. I’m debating between a fine, a medium, or an oblique medium. Any input on the Lamy 2000 Nib sizes would be greatly appreciated. I’ve looked at the nib nook but I was looking for a general consensus
I have both makes of fountain pens. I like the fine nib size in both Sailor and Pilot fountain pens. My Lamy Fine seems to be comparable. I don’t have any experience with medium nibs.
@Avg Joe Show I'd go with the Fine. I purchased a Med because it was on special offer. I normally go for M but I found it too wet and broad for my handwriting. I sent it back to Lamy and asked them to swop it for a Med. I'm pretty sure if you like a Sailor M you will be happy with a Lamy 2000 F. If you are not, you can always send it to Lamy Germany and they will swop out the nib. I don't think the Oblique Med is for you.
I am not too familiar with Sailor nibs, but I am with Pilot nibs. So if you have some of those this might be of use to you. Anyway, after getting a few Pilot pens, I got a Lamy 2000 and I liked it enough that I wanted to get another one with a finer nib than the one I got. So I ordered a fine because, looking at the line width, I was CERTAIN that my first one had to be the medium size. It wasn’t. It was the Fine. Thankfully I had a friend’s birthday coming up who is also into fountain pens and I figured I would gift the extra pen to them. And I did get the extra fine eventually which was fine. Just my two cents in case it helps someone.
Did Brian just imply that dumping a different color dye into the plastic batch or swapping out finials and marking the price up $100 is "innovation". I am not a fan of Pilot but Brian lost the battle for Sailor when that came out of his mouth.
They do the same thing to drugs. They keep the basic drug the same, but change the slightest thing about it, or some other particular, to maintain the patent to prevent it from becoming more available. I get a little weary of the Sailor, constant deluge of pens. I do use them for their fine firm nibs. But I would choose a Pilot first always.
I like both Twsbi and Lamy but I think the Lamy Safari wipes the floor with the Swipe if you're going more for function than novelty. It has a working clip, a better grip and an easily swappable nib. Sailor shikiori and kiwa guro cartridges. Easy.
Brian arguing against that Custom 74 nib ... oh I felt his pain!
Yeah he had a tough time with that one, for sure! - Drew

You are not alone, nor even particularly unusual.
I have both myself, though I have an equal love for them both. They're amazing.

2:27 'Sometimes works' is better than the CON-40
I’ve never had a problem with the con 40, I like it.

I'm dying of laughter and rolling in my bed, PLEASE DO ANOTHER ONE, PLEASE. 😂❤
We're planning another! - Drew
I love the trash talk
I only wish that Pilot would use a converter like the Platinum converters.
Absolutely! - Drew
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🖋
Ugh, Drew defending the Con-70 had me laughing out loud. (I still prefer the Pilot 74.)
I love the feedback from sailor nibs. It’s distinct and very pleasant.
Sailor Pro Gear Slim is my favorite pen. That said, I own plenty of Pilot pens and like them as well. Sailor just has a better nib for my style of writing.
@screenhut very tiny cursive. I find the smaller 14k Sailor nibs just have better definition and feedback for me.
Sailor MF nib - is the perfect factory stock nib in my opinion! Two great pens!
I haven't used a Sailor, but I doubt it would replace the Custom 74 as my favorite pen. I absolutely love that thing.
Ok. I need more of these. The moment Drew starting with the con-70 I about lost it.

I heard you could if you have the barrel of a Safari rollerball. That part can be purchased separately.
This was hilarious watching you guys debate
And we all know the *real* beef with Pilot, their stubborn refusal to release their FM nibs in the U.S.
I have 4 pilots with FM nib bought in USA

I like both Pilot and Sailor, in addition to Platinum pens
Drew, you've really upped your shirt game since waaaay back in episode 76.
I've always wondered why the 74 and 1911 are always compared. Seems like the 1911 would compare more closely to a 742.
Wait, Brian is into figure skating? (yes, that's what my brain latched onto out of this whole video)
