Ever since Robot Wars and Scrapheap Challenge aired at around the same time on British television, with around the same quality garage builds in both, it was such an obvious combination that I'm surprised aside from that one-off NHRL video you made (and I think that single match at opensauce, also by NHRL) it really hasn't gained traction. Scrapbots seems like a great introduction to robot combat since the costs are low and you're only really involved with the hands-on basics, not deep-diving into CAD and spending thousands on manufacture since you kinda need it to be competitive these days. Can't wait to see what happens, I'm thinking of organizing something similar but have a lasercutter or cnc mill on-site so people can design a bit in advance but have chassis panels be manufactured on-site (maybe even a bit ahead of the event) and the rest of the bot assembled only after arrival, just so that every bot doesn't end up as a giant blob of hot glue. The 9V batteries are a good idea, team Witch Doctor have been including them with their new kits and they seem like a safer solution than unprotected lipos or even li-ion cells, especially when the bots are just botched together.
100% agree - I've been wanting something like this for ages! When Ben asked us all for names I immediately suggested Scrapbot Challenge for that reason
I think so too! its at least an interesting intro to the sport Having now run it I think I'd want to refine it more to be a true "beginners" combat event, but its close
Sometimes all it takes is a few interested people with the time to start something. ARC started because Chris and James build an open air arena (a wood base with 10cm high wood walls) in James back yard and put the word out they where running open air combat (so no spinners) once enough people came we funded a lexan cage, moved from James house to a community centre and the rest is history
Ahem... Why am I not seeing any squeaky hammers in those bins? Your slipping... in all seriousness, this is an amazing idea, just make sure your judges and referees have the patience of Job. There will be a lot of 'it worked in the pit' moments before each fight.
Hahaha there was a couple of broken ones, working squeaky hammers would have been far to OP for this event hahaha Surprisingly once people finished the build process the tournament went about the same as normal, sure there where a few fights delayed for repairs, but no more then with our standard ants
So does the ESC have a connector to interface with a radio controller/transmitter? Wouldn't that be pretty big in comparison to the size of the motors being run or am I missing another electrical component here for control

I love this idea. Wish there was something like this where I'm at in the world

This sounds very much like something we want to do being the first arena in our state.

No the ESC its self does not have an interface to the radio transmitter, competitors where supplied a radio receiver
What an awesome idea~! I’m so very proud to have helped inspire something so cool💛💛💛
Watching this makes me so hype to see this event and its results- if I can, maybe I should pull together a Scrapbots event in Columbus….
you should try it!
It was a lot of fun, well worth doing
I would love to see how this event turned out! Any videos from it?
hopefully soon if the footage is usable
Does MCR do an event like this?
They dont as far as I know, but I think there is interest in running something like it
Do you use 12V or 6V N20s?
I usually use 6v but this time we used 3v
Personally I'm not sure there is actually a difference between them. Its something I want to test in future
@@TeamPanicRobotics Thanks! Ive heard higher voltage rated motors have thicker windings, not sure if this is true
I have no idea either
Cool idea. I look forward to seeing the event and the event report too
In todays video, Ben does "Subpar Robot Wars" better than the SubparRW guy.
