This was such an awesome event, I've been wanting a Battlebots/Scrapheat crosover for years! The build time was crazy (esp helping my two kids build their bots as well) but a lot of fun, and it was cool to see (and fight against) all the weird builds people came up with especially the ones that were made out of junk I donated to the pile)

Love the idea of this. these are the builds as a kid i was only ever capable of and while they still ended up falling apart on me after only a week of smacking drink cans around. It got me interested in working out how loads of different things worked and how they could be made into other things, it really spurred my interest into my entire obsession with robots and mechanics. It would be really cool if there were a good few robot builders on youtube who could somehow create a junk robot tournament im sure the build videos for each of them would be fascinating to see how each different builder approached each issue and the design development differently.

Honestly if you where getting a weeks worth of smacking cans out of a build as a kid, thats mighty impressive. I dont think this build would last a week in a kids hands 😅
I'd love to do something like that! the biggest problem would be getting everyone together for it
NHRL managed to pull science/DIY youtubers for their end of year event last year, maybe they could do it for robot combat youtubers

You didn't even let us see it spin up? I know a fight vid is coming, but a test box shot would have been nice. This style of event sounds like it would be so much fun. Thank you for sharing your build and the lessons learned along the way. It's always a blast to see your creations and how you think outside the box, or in this case, rummage through the box to find just the right piece of trash to bring everything together...

unfortunately not, because you saw everything I saw before my first fight, as I was filming the finished bot on the turntable my fight was called. I never got a chance to do a test box spin
It was a lot of fun to do, I'm very keen to do it again next year, I've already got ideas to improve my build and the event itself

Why not try an antenna on the bot and sampling a 2.4ghz beacon from your position, then using doppler shift to do direction finding? Translating the bot shouldn't screw up measurements too much I don't think. Tip speed on a 1ft dia melty at 2k rpm is like 70 mph so translating at a foot per second at most is PROBABLY fine :) Any more than that it's probably because you're ping ponging lol.
