I'm a Scot who moved to the West Country for a long time, after all of your beautiful travels around Japan it was a little surreal to see Taunton out the window on one of your videos, and to hear the familiar whirring of the machine printing your ticket or the GWR recorded announcements that I could recite in my sleep. I was excited to see what you thought of Penzance and Cornwall! If you are ever back in the area I reccomend some of the walking routes and villages to the west, around the Land's End peninsula. After vicariously enjoying the various regional station bentos and local food from around japan I was sorry to see you having to subsist on what looked like whsmith biscuits, but I'm glad you got to have some of the good porridge as well!
Thank you for this video, Kuga! You may think you are just offering enjoyable travel videos, but over this past very busy, hectic year of mine you have given me tranquil, informative and humerous moments to just relax!
The best part of your travel videos, mostly trains of course, is your subdued laid back personality. You are unique in a UA-cam world full of people who think they need to scream during their videos to get their point across. 🚄🚅🚆
@@buster5803 He's not unique though. Most of these Japanese travel vlogs have the same clone format. Very respectful tone and text subtitles, natural sounds. It appears to be a winning format.
I was on this about 6 weeks ago. An advantage the Caledonian Sleeper has is a toilet within the compartment. On the Night Riviera I didn't like having to leave the compartment several times in the night in my PJs to go to the loo at the end of the carriage! (hey, I'm of a certain age!). Also, the compartment is TINY; the bed is VERY narrow. Breakfast is a choice of porridge or a pastry (I can't have the latter; good job I like porridge). But my father was a railway guard, and trains are in my blood. But the overnight sleepers are NOT as romantic as you think they're going to be. But they do the job, and I'm glad we took the train down.
There's not a lot of point any more. Trains are fast enough to get across this little island in a day, so making the most of a night isn't worth it for most journeys. I do understand, though; there is a certain romanticism to sleeper trains that makes travelling all the more fun. 😊
Hi Kuga, Thank you for your latest train excursion. You have fast become a favourite of mine with your superb camera work and the mood that you set. Lovely trip. Best Wishes, Peter
Hi Kuga, I've also done London to Penzance, in 1982 I'd go there with my bicycle and gear ,I rode from Lands end to John OGroats in Scotland for charity, Multiple Sclerosis, went the long way through the lake district and Scottish Highlands, ended up doing 1100 miles in 12 days, it's a scenic rail trip when near the sea, you go past Stone Henge, cheers and good luck 😊
My wife and I took this train to Penzance in 2011, sleeping bunk-bed style in the one compartment. As a fat man, the bed was a little narrow for me, but it was still far better than a seat or driving, and worth the money. We stayed two nights in Penzance, before taking the train to stay in other Cornish and Devon towns (Truro, St Austell, Exeter) before going home.
Kuga, your videos are so informative and relaxing. Thank you for showing Queen Victorias waiting room! Never knew it existed! Also, you should show your handsome face more often 😊😊😊 Thank you for a wonderful video!
Thank you , i live in London and i have thought about doing this , but I feel that the best time to do it is end of June, as the sunrise is at 4am., so the plan would be to go to sleep immediately after boarding, then get up for the sunrise, sleep a bit more, and definitely get up around 6am to enjoy Cornwall's views. Very informative video, thank you. By the way, I have been to Japan several times and I tried to get tickets for the Sunrise Izumo but they were all sold out (as usually happens) , because you can't book from abroad so I could only try to get the tickets once I was already in Japan.
Always love a bronze statue (like the Paddington Bear one at 3:10 ) - you can always see what parts people touch most, in this case the top and sides of his had, and most particularly his nose/muzzle. On some older statues, this is done for good luck, and I like to think it is so with Paddington too.
Just discovered this channel. This is great for high functioning autism people like me with sound sensory issues who can’t stand listening to peoples voices for very long. Awesome work ! ❤
I've done this trip several times in the 80's. It's had a refurbishment, definitely needed. Like sleepers everywhere, they're designed to get you somewhere early in the morning. The only time views could be discerned was once, on November 5, Guy Fawkes night when fireworks punctured the journey! As i recall the train takes a special slow southern route, past Bournemouth? to accommodate sleepers. Kuga you make the poor food almost palatable! Thanks.
That billboard at about 20 minutes is a drawing of "the famous five" from a book series written by Enid Blyton. She was a British author. I love your travel journeys and your honest comments! Keep up the good work! Saying hi from the Netherlands 🤗
The West Highland Line (Glasgow to Oban or Mallaig) is incredible, and in Scotland/The UK. Considered one of the most beautiful in Europe, so I hope you do check that out.
You passed through my city (Plymouth) on your journey, Kuga! Glad you liked Penzance - it's my favourite town in Cornwall. Hope you enjoyed the scenery on your return journey - I never get tired of the views, no matter how many times I've travelled in Devon and Cornwall by train. The original GWR was nicknamed God's Wonderful Railway, and I suspect the landscape had a lot to do with that!
It's true that there are no showers on the train but there are showers in the first class lounges at Paddington, Penzance, and Truro, which are complimentary for cabin guests.
I have seen 3 other videos of travelers doing this journey. Yours was the only one with pleasant weather in Penzance and the showers working. You got so lucky.
Took this very recently. It was a good experience but bumpy. If you don't just fall asleep fast, you will struggle. Finally drifted off after Bristol. Sausage and bacon rolls are a better breakfast imho !
Loved this 😊 Paddington is my favourite London station and tho I've been in the 1st class lounge I was unaware of the Queen Victoria link 😮. Looked like a splendid new train, I'm glad you enjoyed the journey ❤
My favourite sleeper is Stockholm to Malmö in Sweden 🇸🇪- first class has big bunks, en suite shower and breakfast was in a 4* hotel in Malmö. It cost the same for two of us as I have paid for The Caledonian Sleeper standard bunk!
Stunning Landscape on arrival Britain is so beautiful. Interior looks good but the bed is way to narrow for me.Price for a single compartment was ok if you compare it to nightjet trains from ÖBB, Single is always more expensive if you dont book that long in advance.
I've always wanted to take the Sleeper train, I've done that journey many many times but never overnight. I would prefer the more laid-back sleeper train I think :)
I hope you went back to London by first class- those GWR trains have the most uncomfortable standard class seats I've ever experienced- like a church pew 😩
I only knew about that musical opera/comedy “The Pirates of Penzance” - I think it was with Linda Ronstadt. Now I know where that originated from in real life 👍😮😂 Thank you! 👍🌷
Been on both, the GWR seems better to me though the Caledonian is hauled by a class 92 electric locomotive and the rooms are bigger in some coaches ,the first class lounge at Paddington is very good .the locomotive that took you to Penzance is a former Class 47 locomotive which was build between 1964 and 1968 refurbished into a Class 57 ,
Very nice video, I like how the way you filmed they journey in the peaceful , quiet way let us to feel how the journey was. By the way, the day your mobile phone showed you were on the train was my birthday, 20/8/2024..
It is a fabulous train. However, I personally prefer to take a daytime train which has a restaurant. You can then spend a couple of hours enjoying a good (but a little expensive) three-courses meal while the countryside rushes past. The food is actually cooked on the train so it is always very good quality. There are several restaurant trains and you have to check the timetable - not all of them have it.
A travel with this typical britisch Understatement 😊and the porridge Looks good with honey ITS a great combination🎉and great that There is a lounge in the Main Station👍
It travels at a specially reduced speed to ensure a smooth sleep, and also so that you don't arrive too early before you've had a good sleep. Day-time trains travel as much as double the speed (certainly on certain sections).
There was a time when you could put your car 🚗 on the train at Paddington and get it off at Penzance! I did it several times when I went home for 8 weeks in the summer!
Thank you for sharing this journey with us. I'm from the Penzance area, but live up on the east coast of the uk. I usually make the long and mundane coach trip to visit my family but this year, inspired by your vidoes, i took the train. Due to visit again so am shortly off to my local station to book tickets for the overnight train. Its a shame there are no showers on board though. GWR could learn from JR Railways there ! ❤
Wow, that 1st class area with lime green chairs - totally the chintziest! On train, that really a 1st class room? It's smaller than a roomette on US Amtrak.

In UK, we once had sleeper trains all over the country, Calidonian and this one are the only 2 that survive now, its such a shame!
And so pricy 😢😢
Maybe not so many travellers between cities as before, hence the closure. Shame coz some beautiful scenes around the UK.
I didn't even know they were a thing over here.

wow that is a super nice train. And perhaps the quietest train I have ever seen. You must have felt at home.

You can't call yourself fat, it's a hate crime.

...but have you seen "Cardiff, Japan"? 😂
When you get to PZ, you could go into the greasy cafe right next to the train station called Sullivans for a true English Breakfast.
Ug - no! I've eaten there. Much better eateries within Penzance like the Smuggler's cafe or the Honey pot. We can do good food in Cornwall. 😊
