The crown gear shaft should sit on the bronze washer. This bronze washer end needs to be shimmed to remove any end play between the big bearing and bronze washer. The crown gear shaft should not float. The crown gear should not use the pinion gear as a stop. The pinion gear is then shimmed to fit the crown gear without any clearance. Factory manuals and other resources does not address this float.

Interesting. I have a final drive that was ‘overhauled’ by someone else, and it has excessive float, similar to this drive. Do you know of a link to a description of the correct way to shim both ring and pinion (crown?) gears? Thanks for your useful comment.

@@richardwhitehead4684 I did a test assembly (several times) with the two shaft seals not installed and the pinion gear shaft removed to allow for free movement of the shaft and bearings. I then assembled the cover with the crown gear installed and no gaskets or shim. The Cover would not fully seat. There was 0.2mm clearance between the cover and the housing seat. When you add the shim and two gaskets which are a total of 1.25 cm in thickness. 1.25mm -.0.2mm = 1.05 mm in end play. (.041"). This is enough rattle. When stacking shims, you do not want the bearing to be tight or what is called side loading. You want the bearing to spend freely, but not bind.
The next step is to install the pinion gear. It has shims between the two taper bearings. They have to be moved from one end to the other to move the pinion gear in or out. Do this step before installing the grease seals and with the crown gear installed and cover tight.
The pinion gear nut is very tight. You may have to take it to a professional mechanic to get the nut off. This is the same type of fitment, not tight, not rattle, smooth and no clearance.

@@johncroucher2605 thank you. I’ll be taking my drive apart again soon, and will circle back when I do.

Czy wiesz jak odkręcić nakrętkę, która jest przy uszczelniaczu? Obecnie mam wyciek oleju z dyfra do wału i chciałbym wymienić uszczelniacz, ale nie mogę sobie poradzić z nakrętką...

What year is this Guzzi differential from?

hello , is that adjust noise correct or it has to be with less slack . thanks a lot

    • @johncroucher2605

The slack should not be there. This is caused by the lack of shims on the needle bearing end. I had to add shims to get rid of this end play. The shims can be purchased from McmasterCarr. 55mm x 45mm. Buy 1 @ .1mm and a pack of 10 @ .2 mm to stack up. When doing the test fit, leave out the shaft seal in the housing and cover. When you get the proper clearance and no side loading on the big bearing, install the shaft seals.
With the float, the crown gear uses the pinion gear to stop the crown gear shaft from floating. This is not the correct set up. You want the crown gear shaft use the shims in the gear box housing as an end stop.

    Way too much play

    • @johncroucher2605

Yeap. I used shims on the needle bearing end to make up for the end play. If this slack is not removed, the crown gear uses the pinion gear as a stop. The cover shim is too thick. The shims are 45 x 55 mm and come in several thicknesses. I used .1 mm and a .2 mm to remove the end play. Purchased from mcmastercarr.
Also, the axle spacer will come out. It is a press fit in the housing. A little heat to the aluminum housing and a good pull and it will come out. I used some sealant when reinstalling encase the shaft seal leaks. This old tractor and other sources do not take into account that the crown gear shaft bearing seats, shim and cover bearing seat are not accurate in the stack height.
