I'd love more discussion about ADHD and how it relates to autism. Seems like there's a lot of emerging research that ADHD is an ASD sub-type, or at least related in some way.

It took absolutely ages to get my psychiatrist to believe me, especially since whenever my mom was in the room with us (I'm only 19, been trying to get this diagnosis since my friend pointed it out because I'm so similar to her brother when I was like 17) she would contradict me every time I said I showed a particular behavior as a child; as if she'd know, she worked all the time when I was little, the person to ask would be my dad but my parents are divorced and he lives in a different state. It was infuriating.

@@AustinRoberts88 I hope it has helped you to understand yourself.
It took me a while to get used to the idea and I still struggle with internalised ableism from time to time but honestly, life has gotten better. The people around me cut me more slack and are more understanding when I need downtime. I went to a wedding earlier this year and the couple alerted me that I could go and have a rest in their “getting ready room” if I needed to decompress. It really helped get me through what was a really long day of lots of people and socialising. I also knew that I would need to put aside a couple of days afterwards for rest and to recover. I hope that your journey is also a positive one. There are times when it isn’t as positive obviously but for the most part, my quality of life has improved as I understand more about myself and can take proactive steps to protect my mental well-being. Good luck!

I was diagnosed with Aspergers as a child in the 70’s, but nobody told me what it was called. Instead I was told I had a higher than average IQ, but that I learned differently and that I had a “shell” around me that made it difficult for me to make friends. My dad refused to acknowledge anything was different about me, and my mom told me that it was something I was doing, not really something I was.
I got a little support from school for a couple of years, then for some reason it stopped. I only found out about my diagnosis a couple of years ago when I requested my public school records. Of course it was like a light going on as I thought, “Wow, so many things make sense now!”
I learned mostly on my own how to cope, and I don’t feel like I need services, but I still struggle to form friendships, and mostly avoid social situations.

I am just turning 50 and taken a year off Uni because of health problems. My diagnosis started 6 years ago with Dyslexia, ADHD and Executive Disfunction followed more recently with Asperger's, and I suspect I also have Epilepsy, of witch I am waiting for formal diagnosis. I do sometimes struggle because there is no support where I live in the Highlands, so I've been self supporting. I have a very good understanding of ADHD and EF, but playing catch-up on ASD and Epilepsy. I tend to rely on the internet to get an overview and opinion of Neurological disorders and then follow up with more in-depth text books and theory. If my remaining degree goes well, I am considering a Masters in Psychology.
Getting a diagnosis has been an absolute nightmare, especially at my age. GP's need some training in Neurological conditions, everyone of my appointments has led to dismissal of theory with no referral. I've had to battle to get across even a basic theoretical understanding. Something has to change..

I watch your videos because thankd to you I discovered I am on the spectrum. You see, when I was in my country (Venezuela) my psychologist told me I might be asperger. But then, after a few tests she said she was wrong. But then, when I moved to Spain I startes watching your videos and I realized she wasn't wrong. She was testing me as if I was a boy. I did not have some of the "symptoms" she thought I should have in order to get a diagnosis.
I've had a real struggle all my life with anxiety (attempt of suicide included), issues with executive functioning, with sensory processing, with socialising, etc.
But I also have special interests, I am self taught in many things and english is my second language (self taught as well).
I began to think I was broken, that something was wrong with me. But your videos helped me to understand myself. I still don't have an official diagnosis but I will try to find it as soon as I can. Because I know I'm not wrong. I've been improving so much since I watch myself as an autistic person.
    Thank you, Dan :)

I was diagnosed with aspergers about 8 months ago (just before I turned 25). In Norway that's still a diagnosis, my psychologist doesn't use the term autism. It seems like more people understand the term aspergers too. Also here when it comes to access and need for support, it doesn't seem like there's a difference whether you've been diagnosed with aspergers or autism.
I like to use the term aspergers since that's what I'm diagnosed with and what I'm referred to as, and I think it's upsetting that people in autism communities jump on me, saying it doesn't exist and that I'm being ableist (no, I don't think I'm ''better'' or ''higher functioning'' than other autistic people). It's just my diagnosis, which is still a thing in my country. It's just a word, like calling it leukemia vs (blood) cancer. It's the same thing, just a different word / term for it.

I have multiple BFRBs as well. I believe It’s just another sign that is often missed. Of course you can have autism and not have BFRBs, but there is a correlation. It is tricky to get diagnosed, my parents didn’t believe me so I had to find a diagnostician myself. I was diagnosed last year as ASD Level 1, but most of the time I'll tell people I'm Asperger's Syndrome because I find it's more familiar and describes me better than "autistic". People seem to think "autistic" means kids having meltdowns, unable to speak, etc., the "classic" autism. Asperger's is more familiar as the "nerd autism" but people don't automatically assume you're disabled. (This is in the United States, btw.)

I have autism, but am not diagnosed yet (on the waiting list). I decided last year to get a diagnose, because I want to know exactly what autism means to me and want to be able to explain that to other people (when I work with new people for example).
I did not decide earlier to get it, because I thought it wouldn't be neccesary. Later I realised that it would be better if I got it when I started college and work.
I like to learn more about autism, since I thought at first it only meant trouble with socialicing and communication (I have a speech impediment and do not always get what people say right away). I already read a book about autism and follow a channel (in dutch) about autism by girls ( i am a girl).
It's nice that you decided to make a channel about autism and other diagnoses! You are doing great!

One thing I noticed with my mum was that when I got my diagnosis, she was a bit reluctant when it came to saying “autism”, still is a little, probably due to stigma. I really do not want it to be something I try to hide. That is not good for anyone🖤

I went to the doctor and asked about me being autistic and he gave me the 50 question test which I scored 28. Could you do a video explaining what the scores mean because I read a page which said over 32 means you have asperges , but the computer said I have aspergers with a score of 28 , thanks .

    • @diegochewacka
      @diegochewacka 4 роки тому

Im sure I know the test you did...
So, the test its just an approximation. The scores are from people with or without autism: 1-28 is usually neurotypical persons, 28-31 maybe Asperger-High functioning autism, 32-39 is more sure asperger and autism an more than 40 low functioning autism I think (or a score people with autism score less). So, maybe you are autistic, asperger or not, but with 28 or more is better to go to a profesional and talk about it if its really a problem for you.
For example, I did the test several times online and my scores are around 36, but Im not sure enough of anything. It was months since you post this, I don't know what you did in this time, but do de test more times, overthinking the questions and watching more videos about is a good start.

Soundsory ordered! Thank you for the introduction and the discount! Just this morning, I was thinking how much I would like to take more control of my ADHD. I hope this system will help!
I wasn’t diagnosed with Asperger’s until I was 43, but that diagnosis made sense of so much for me; my talents, my challenges, my “alien-ness” and my persistent feeling like I missed the rules to the social game of being human. I wish I could have known earlier. I would have gone much easier on myself, which would have ultimately been easier on my parents, too!
    Re: Nomenclature
I would much rather use “Condition” than “Disorder”. ASD is what makes me Me in so many ways; that’s not a disorder, nor is it something I would change. Neurodiversity is as important to humanity’s future as any other measure of diversity is.
Once again, thank you for doing what you’re doing!

I just scored 38 in the test you link to, but I'm not very good at seeking help, and the health care system in my area in Scotland is far from perfect, especially for mental health issues. I've been on anti-depressants for 20 years on and off, so I don't know. I don't even know if it matters. I'm reasonably intelligent in maths, science, engineering and things, but I don't take academic work well at all, especially if it seems like a waste of time, or something I don't want to learn. I am 21F and live in Switzerland. I got into therapy for depression and anxiety which got so much worse when I started uni in Zürich, especially sensory stuff. After a year of therapy I casually got one of your videos about girls on the spectrum. It was mindblowing and it basically became a special interest of mine 😂. So I went back to my therapist and asked her and she was like "yeah, thought about that too" and I took a few of the basic screening tests with her, like AQ, Ritvo, different EQs and SQs and everything suggested a diagnosis. I am still on a waiting list (9months) and having a very hard time at home. I am with my family due to the virus and my mother still says that it "you are not autistic yet, for now it's just an excuse you use" as if being autistic begins with diagnosis. It hurts me a lot, but I have kind of given up at this point, since every time I try to talk about my experience it becomes a "no but i read this and that" and if she gets contraddicted she just gets angry.
I wanted to thank you for all your awesome work and for all the checklists, which helped with anxiety like, a lot.

Hey Dan, thanks for everything you do to help people! I’m diagnosed with ADHD and am beginning to suspect I may be on the higher functioning end of the spectrum. Conversation has always been a struggle for me, but thankfully I’ve found my “niche” teaching drums at a place that doesn’t force me to interact with people I haven’t met. The band I play with is understanding of the fact that I don’t really know how to contribute to group conversations, or that I might miss a queue like not realizing I was supposed to stand up for the national anthem. This actually happened at one of our last shows and it was pretty funny!

In 2013 I was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome (+ a few other things like OCD) and that used to be the word I used but nowadays I just say I'm Autistic! I've gone through too many instances of people using me saying I have Aspergers instead of Autism to their (often ableist) benefit (ranging from my high school to my peers at college). Especially with me being female, using the Autistic label is important to me now (proving that girls CAN have Autism!) So, I'm open about my Autism and if allistic/neurotypicals don't like it, it makes it easier for me to know (and avoid them!)!

Hello from the US! I don't know if this will be buried but I've been watching your videos for about 4 months(I'm a "neutrotypical"). I found your channel because my boyfriend was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome as a child(he's 20 now). He has depression and anxiety as well. I know it's played a huge part in his life and he's been through such terrible things because of it. He doesn't like to talk about it with me very much and tries to forget it's there, but I've been learning about it to be a better support as his girlfriend. But as I started watching your channel and learning more about it, I started seeing traits he displays and it's been helping me understand him better.
Your channel has helped me be a supportive and understanding partner, according to him. Because of you, it assures me that my wonderful boyfriend will be okay. Even if his self-esteem doesn't let him quite see that yet.
He's such a sweet person with such a good-natured and loving heart, always being so thoughtful and kind to me and others. I love him so much and your videos have helped me so much, thank you so much and best wishes!

Also the pandemic needs to calm down before I even think of going for an eval. Also, where I live in the US doesn’t really have the best resources. I am doing all the research so that I can self-advocate like a boss when the time comes. I aim to be educated. I’m working to take of the mask and it’s been stressful, but freeing. Thx for your videos. I was diagnosed with ADD and OCD/anxiety as a child and I know that I still have those in addition to ASD based on the DSM-5. When you said you had ADHD and ASD I felt not crazy anymore cuz it introduced me to the fact of comorbidities with ASD.

Thank you, so much, for your videos. Earlier this month, I used the links you provided to self-test and, as a result had an evaluation last week here in the USA. Today I received my official diagnosis: "High-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (previously referred to in the DSM-4 as Asperger's Syndrome)."
The neuropsychologist who evaluated me said he doesn't like the grouping of AS under ASD because, "no one who knows you will believe you if you tell them you have Autism because you have no language deficits, you're intelligent, and you mask so well. But if you tell them you have Asperger's Syndrome, they'll either ask you to explain it or they'll say, 'oh yeah, that makes sense.'"
I've lost count of the number of times I've said, "THAT'S why I do that," while watching your videos. Many of your comments have appeared to me as if you were an actor playing ME in a video. More than once, I've shouted, "this is my freaking biography," because your comments so closely mirror my experiences in some areas. (But, as you've said, when you meet one autistic person, you've met one autistic person."
One additional thing I wanted to share that I will use to help me explain my condition to others. I work in web design and development, video editing, and other computer-related areas, so computer analogies work well for me. And I really like this one because I'm a Mac guy, too! 🍏 My doctor said that this is an accurate analogy of HF-ASD / Asperger's Syndrome vs. the neurotypical mind:
Most people have no problem using Windows software because they're running the Windows operating system on their computers. Macs can run Windows and Windows software, but it takes more effort, is more complicated, and it makes your computer work harder. Your brain is a Mac computer in a predominantly Windows world. Life is harder, more complicated, and more tiring for you, but you can still get the job done just as well, and sometimes better than others.

I don't entirely agree that Asperger's and autism are one and the same. I think it's a shame to see the word Asperger's being phased out as a diagnosis, even in the forthcoming ICD-11. Although I see a benefit in just having 'ASD' in order to receive more support etc., and it's obvious that autism is, like with many other conditions, on a spectrum, I still think that 'ASD' is way too broad a diagnosis. Bipolar Disorder is a spectrum, but still has three main subtypes on the DSM-5 - is it not valid that autism could have various subtypes, including Asperger's as one?
Also, Asperger's has subtle differences from so-called 'high-functioning' autism. I feel that features such as a lack of speech delay and often high intelligence, as well as other subtle traits, surely justify it being kept even as an ASD subtype; I think it's a shame that this diagnosis is essentially being consigned to the dustbin when, as research conducted by Prof. Tony Attwood/Dr. Lorna Wing suggests, it does differentiate subtle traits within the autistic spectrum. However, I certainly don't view Asperger's as superior to autism, I just feel that the new diagnostic criteria is too broad and does not represent autism accurately.

He struggles with a lot of the executive dysfunction, emotional regulation, and sensory issues I do. The differences being that he has no problem focusing at work, he finds socialising incredibly draining (while I hate being alone) he is distressed by changes in routine, and recently told me he fakes eye contact, even with me!
The only things that don't seem to fit with ASD are that he is actually VERY good at understanding metaphorical language (hes a talented writer), picks up on social cues well, and experiences empathetic feelings intensely, to a degree that is almost debilitating for him.

This year I reached my breaking point and after seeing my...well I'm not sure what her official title is, I'll just call her my 'mental health care leader'...for a few months, she told me about 5 weeks ago that although she can't officially diagnose me (she's made a referral for me to her colleagues who can, for diagnosis) that I very likely have Asperger's Syndrome. It's been a bit of a rollercoaster lately and it's only been the last few weeks that I've started to look at this more positively (read as; without breaking down in tears over it every 10minutes). Hiya, I've recently been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome and ocd. I got diagnosed with these disorders after giving birth. I have a few questions and wondered if you had any knowledge on this. Firstly I wondered has anyone ever had addiction issues due to their diagnosis.so I have a drink problem because I used alcohol as a clutch to cope with my disorders and it has become a huge problem. Secondly I wondered if you or anyone can't cope with hysterical people or somebody acting extremely emotional,I just can't cope with hysterical behaviour from others. I'm a huge loner to and try to avoid others at all costs and this ends up in loneliness, I actually only like being around people I know really well ie family, friends I've know for years. Also I could spend the whole day just learning about facts I tend to watch top 5s on UA-cam on here to and I am obsessed with the channel. Lastly I am obsess d with horror, and I will literally watch the same films over and over again everyday. There are so many things but I can't get it all out. In Germany we still have the term "Asperger's Syndrome", because of the ICD 10 we use here. So it's still called F84.5 Asperger's Syndrome. On my diagnosis paper it says "Autism Spectrum Disorder (F84.5 Asperger's Syndrome)". I guess when we get updated to the ICD 11 in Germany there won't be any Asperger's anymore. But people still use this term a lot here. :)

My friends son I find it helps him more to challenge him to do things he doesn’t want to do... ie: using the toilet and wearing underwear. With my son I find it better to make a task seem like his idea, because if he thinks it’s my idea he will become quite defiant because of his oppositional defiance disorder. 🤣 I love both boys, because they are super funny, silly, and sweet.

My diagnosis came right after a break-up with someone who I sincerely and deeply loved. Hi, Daniel,
*Thank you for what you do in spreading awareness and helping those of us who are on the spectrum!*
This is one of my favorite months of the year: World Autism Awareness Month.
I was "diagnosed" with Asperger's Syndrome and I never allowed my Autism (and nearly 20 years of teasing) to have the prerogative to slow me down, insofar of getting my first book published last year at age 23 and an Associate's in Chemistry.
I was on radio yesterday morning speaking about my journey with autism. Here's my annual video from a firsthand's perspective (including the mini radio interview): ua-cam.com/video/kMHoMH15FS8/v-deo.html
I personally thank you in spreading awareness. It brings peace to my heart.

I think I have autism but the idea of going for a diagnosis freaked me out, but I’m not at ease not having an answer, so I don’t really know what to do

Scarlett Valentine If you feel you need one badly enough, you’ll find a way. I tried to forget about the whole thing (seeking a diagnosis for autism) out of fear that I was wrong, but I couldn’t just forget. So I sought one out, and I tell you it was worth it. For me, it was a year and a half from when I started suspecting it and when I was finally diagnosed. It may not hurt to start the process already, because it could take a while. And then you’ll get it over with.

In my late forties, the powers that be, tested me and have given me the following lables. Adult aspergers, A-sexual or sexuality and having an IQ of 136.. All of this didn't help me understand this condition.. I'm and old man now, and it might be nice to understand just what I've missed in life..!..? Can you give me a direction..!

I was diagnosed by an Autism specialist psychiatrist back in 2009, she explained that the difference between Autism and Asperger Syndrome is learning ability. People diagnosed with Autism have language difficulties and/or a below average IQ, people with Asperger Syndrome have no language difficulties and an IQ that's average or higher.

That could be possible, I have aspergers and I started saying my first words at 10 months, and now at 25 I speak almost 9 languages. Don't know about IQ, but I've always learned very fast and can have a pretty good memory, and I read 700-1000 words per minute.

@@CarolineCarnivorous Wow, that is impressive; I'm not on your level but my IQ was tested by an educational psychologist, it's in the 150's.

I'm fond of the Aspie descriptor. Like, you're Pretty ok at dealing with things, but some stuff is hard (some stuff is Very hard), and I'm kinda weird.
Using Autistic feels... I dunno, fraudulent? And that's likely because of certain ways mine manifests- more like it does in women, actually, and so my masking and splinter skill ability is High. I crafted the "social pantomimes" by observing others, and mask on an Internal level, I guess due to my acting ability- I Become another character. like method acting. I only have Serious issues when I run out of script, or that character cracks and the LARP fails and actual me with it's shortcomings comes bleeding through.
Was this a healthy solution? I don't know. probably not. I wasn't allowed to have such shortcomings- and not in the "Thou shalt", it's just my family had Way more faith in my capacity to overcome whatever shortcomings might've been there (like dyslexia and dyscalculia, and depression and This) than perhaps I had, and I was expected to manage regardless. All from love, but damn that's caused me some stress. I know part of that is my age- mid 40's. Nobody knew.
Happened to my mother with Dyslexia, before anybody knew about that. And my grandmother. "Weirdo" was no excuse. Things had to get done anyway.
So now I'm down this ASD rabbit hole. And trying to figure out what I've just gotta soldier through, and what I can forgive myself for accepting "No, I really don't have to splat myself against that wall, Again" I dunno man. Thanks for your channel. It helps.

I dont know if I'm on the spectrum I've never be diagnosed with it but I've never been completely honest and forthcoming with psychiatrists. Regardless I know I'm different and have different challenges than most people.

I just like to research these kinds of things. My closest friends are on the spectrum, one of them is getting evaluated for Autism. They like to joke that if I were to get myself tested, they wouldn't be suprised if I came out with a diagnosis. They also like to tell me that a lot of my family members have autistic tendancies.
