I saw the original cast of Matilda in London when I was a kid, and Bertie Carvel had the entire theatre in stitches whenever he was onstage. I still remember his performance better than anything else about the show ten years later! Without a doubt the Trunchbull with the best comedic chops - though I have high hopes for Emma Thompson in the upcoming movie. :)
He also created this version. The rest are just photo copies. Wearing the costume rather than inhabiting the physique. It was impossible to recast with anyone that came close. God he was great
I never knew this role was. Guy I've never seen it before but like if I had just been listening and even watching that sounded like a woman! Yooo Carvel is awesome. Came here from the Parade album 😅
you know the more I listen to Bryce the more I love how nasty the execution is in relation to mimicking the instrumental ornamentation of a jazzy dragging brass sound. Also what a strain on the vocals before finishing with that high note. sheesh! that's some serious skill.
Notice how Bertie Carvel is the only during The Smell of Rebellion flicking his leg up and down and does a little double bounce before flicking his leg up again, all the other actors just flick their legs up and down. I think they all perform as Miss Trunchbull really well and add their own values and quirks to the characters. Such as Charles Brunton walking with his legs bent and leaning forwards or backwards, emphasizing the madness of the character. Or even the anger Christopher Sieber adds to Miss Trunchball, or some notes Bryce Ryness hits when performing. They are all equally as amazing to me for their own reasons.
All the actors are brilliant, but for Bertie to originate the role (in all three "main" productions, no less) with such an iconic and perfect performance it must be difficult for those following him to give an interpretation that fits the character while not feeling like it's "copying" Bertie. Also, I've always wondered, did Bertie gradually change the voice he did for the character over the years, or was it a conscious change for the transfer to Broadway?
Bertie Carvel is such a chameleon. I saw him on Saturday playing Donald Trump and he was completely unrecognisable and convincing. And very lovely when I met him after.
I may be a Carvel loyalist but I really feel that only Bertie fully manages to load that slyness into his face and a silky lightness into his voice that contrasts with Trunchbulls huge body. It's like the pointy nose in the Blake drawings; the idea is that there's a very mean, small, sarcastic person inside this ogress. It's not just roaring and trampling, there's gaslighting and persuasion in there too. Because that's fascism.
I love Christopher sieber mainly because they were the first one that I saw but I really love how they bring opera singing and they have a really great delivery even though people say that they’re less feminine, I don’t really care I think he did an amazing job, singing, wise and comedic wise
my son loves to sing trunchball and he also has the ribbon and the costume! we are waiting for some medals to arrive with his costume (he already has made his own trunchball costume).
Ope throwback to when I, a smol boi got cast as the Trunchbull and had to wear a fatsuit and I almost passed out during the first dress rehearsal from heat exhaustion
@@maggotsrule1959 I would presume to accomodate his vocal range. A small shift of key can make all the difference for a performer. While it's not common practice but producers approving the expense of such a change means someone otherwise perfect for the role is able to be cast.

How did you feel about Emma Thompson? I for one was shocked how good she was!
@@forrestpenrod2294 She was BRILLIANT. Absolutely hilarious and completely got the vibe of Trunchbull.
@@forrestpenrod2294great prosthetics. Nothing added that hadn’t been achieved by Bertie. It’s untouchable his performance

Wait what do you mean by then have you seen the show in Stratford or
Thank you for all of you playing miss Trunchbull incredible job for singing the hammer all those times
Christopher Sieber looks the best as The Trunchbull, but Bertie Carvel sounds the best
dude agree!
Thans so much for making this! This was helpful for me as I am rehearsing the role.
Why is Bertie the only one who seems to even try to sound like a woman?

Christopher Sieber also originally played Lord Farquaad in the Shrek Musical. So it makes sense that he would play Miss Trunchbull.
Bertie is my favourite trunchbull in the world
Carvel is brilliant, Sieber is hilarious, and Ryness is really growing on me. Still have to give the crown to Carvel though
Bertie Carvel,Charles Brunton,Bryce Ryness, and Christopher Sieber are my four favorites
The fact i have to play her in my theatres production scares me
