after 15 years still a beautiful song, a beautiful text, a beautiful voice and a beautiful location. Looking forward to see Jim White in Utrecht in January 2025.
I booked Jim White sometime in the late "90s and will never forget his performance. Like I had booked a Cowboy's ghost lost to the Prairie. Haunting, darkly riveting. One of my favorite bookings ever.
My friend Brian introduced me to this song over a decade ago when we were living rough in Gatlinburg, TN. Song still hits pretty hard...more so since Brian died. He developed a meth addiction back about 6-7 years ago, and two years ago this winter, he tried to steal a catalytic converter off of a van broken down on I-40 a few miles from the NC state line. The jack he was using failed, and the van fell on him. I had my problems, like he did (but with pills and alcohol), but as I sobered up, he got worse. Life's that way, I guess.
My heart goes out to you and to Brian's family. I've lost many in similarly grim contexts. The song is about running toward your fears, rather than away from them. No sense fleeing, as your shadow is always faster than your feet.
This is obviously great, thanks Jim. Don't ask why isn't this more popular, who cares, you found it and that's who it was made for. There are very few secrets in music these days with streaming. Townes was underground for most of his life, yet his music has and will continue to 'save' many of souls, mine included. If his music was on the top 40 the essence would be diluted, and sure it may have helped some other people who wouldn't have heard it otherwise but then it wouldn't have been there for the likes of you and I who know there is more to it than album sales. our culture is popularity based when in fact the more pop(popular) the music, the less quality there usually is. Think about it. Dig a little deeper, go through the substrate my friend.
This was the first Jim White tune I was exposed to (by chance - go figure!)- been a fan ever since - truly a unique/haunting/awesome american artist...
Saw Jim in Waycross at the Gram Parsons Festival. He was great!! I had seen "searching for wrong eyed Jesus" but was not ready for how good this guy is.
this is a gorgeous version of this song...I find the recorded version a little spookier tho...this guy's live show is awesome...his stories in between songs are half of his appeal I find!
I met JW when he supported David Byrne in Edinburgh years and years ago - had never heard of him but bought Wrong Eyed Jesus there and then and got it signed too. Wonderful stuff, thanks for uploading.
i remember we got a computer back in 2005 from a local guy who worked with computers (his old one) and it had loads of van morrison on it, along with other stuff, but i really liked this song. really nice :)

The album:No such place is perfect for road trips by a mile one of the best musicians ever.the tree best albums(in my eyes):No such place, wrong eyed jesus(scary backstory),drill a whole in the ground are just amazing😜
This version is much better than the one on his album "Wrong Eyed Jesus." Does anyone know where i can find(download/buy) this acoustic version? - No youtube downloader is not good enough, i would like to have it in cd quality or at lest 320kbs mp3
@rongermanjr Sorry not had a chance to look for that track, I'll try and do it soon when I get home, maybe in a week or so, I've definately got it, but at the bottom of a box....?
CHECK OUT the new Tour Documentary of Jim White, youtube 'Jim White Jazz Cafe Documentary' and it will pop up, behind the scens look at Jim on the road...
@JerryBeatFreak Lambchop, Vic Chesnutt, Calexico, Wilco, Jeb Loy Nicholls, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Grand Drive, Palace Music and Will Oldham solo, Paul Birch, Bill Callahan from Smog, Handsome Family, Son Volt, Johnny Dowd are some I can think of, not all that similar but in that direction, all good and all worth you tubing, chris.
@maclennan73 hey...i've been aware of jim white for a number of years and i used to have an UNCUT disk that had a song by him on it called Hey!!! You Goin' My Way???, but i cannot find it on anyone's playlists here. any chance you or anyone you know has it & can post it?....ron
@maclennan73 yes....seems to me it was UNCUT February 2001 (but don't quote me on the month/year, i had so many of them it's hard to remember them), Americana: Songs of the American West Vol 2.......The Wound That Never Heals and Static on the Radio were two other Jim White songs that the UNCUT magazine featured on their discs......the discs come free with the magazine and typically feature tracks form artists/groups that are new releases, but they also featured stuff from reissues, etc

some random person gave me a Jim White CD about 10 years ago while I was leaving a ferstival. THANK GOD! Jim yer the best. Thanks man!

Jim White is an American folk/country music genius that more folks need to hear.
He's the type of artist that doesn't get recognized until it's too late. The man is an absolute genius and an incredible story teller
He wrote this when he was struggling with Depression. It's about tackling the demons in your life instead of running away from them.
Perzackerly, Rachel!
no its not. its about chasing tornadoes.
All good .
Incredible artist. Found out about him thanks to El Camino, he's incredible.
I discovered him through 'Wordmule' which was also featured in one of BB episodes.
Another reason to love Breaking Bad.
Vince doing Jim a solid. Great show, great music!
Jim White is the hope that reminds you that despite the moments of despair it might be a good idea to carry on breathing.

Thank you for sharing your story, sad as it is. The only way folks learn is by sharing stories and aiming for higher ground.
This is my favourite song on the album and didn't realise it is such a perfect song, even 'naked'. Makes me think of Townes Van Zandt...
(Townes' Waitin' around to die)
Better version than the album one ! Amazing !
This is obviously great, thanks Jim.

Beautiful song, beautiful voice, beautiful location, perfect, go on Jim!
Filmed in my town Gothenburg in Sweden, by the Masthugget church on top of a hill overlooking the river.
Exactly the same as Lay Lover. Saw “El Camino” and loved the music at the end. Excellent ‼️
The best thing on UA-cam, period. Probably the best thing ever.
A beautiful, mad (sane in this world) genius. He can tear your guts with songs like this. Amazing story-teller.

Amazing song and voice and everything....!!!
Love this.. really hauntingly beautiful.. I live in tornado country, now.. So, it hits more close to home than when I was in San Diego.
Best musician and songwriter out of Athens Ga in 20 years!
Jim White = Hero to me. Keep on truckin' friend!!
this is a gorgeous version of this song...I find the recorded version a little spookier tho...this guy's live show is awesome...his stories in between songs are half of his appeal I find!
Shout out from Memphis!💞

Thanks for posting this. Beautiful song.
The wall looks its bales of hay , the background looks like a cold desert night . Delighted to hear where reality is .
unbelivable inspiring . . .
Genius who lives to push envelopes like Whitley, Buckley, Waits, etc. Amazing lyricist.
And a great guitar player. My eyes were glued to his fingers most of the way through this video.
Like Nick Drake

I know! UA-cam quality is terrible, dying to find the original audio
Why have I never heard of this guy ? He's brilliant ! The media seems to promote so much shit bands/artists, and good stuff passes us by...

Being from South Georgia I'm good on chasing tornadoes... But it is a deeper meaning then literally chasing them lol I ain't ignorant i know.
