Yes I used to think they were complete opposites but then later after reading Bjorn's book, "My Life and Game," I realized that those two were very much alike. Bjorn had a ton of anger he would fight to control and very much the same intensity as McEnroe. He had a lot of anger issues as a kid and tennis sort of allowed him to channel it in a positive way and like many he appeared very calm and serene. Not so at all. He felt much the same way McEnroe felt just he kept it from spilling out but channeled or focused it into a positive energy in his game.
John McEnroe is refreshingly honest and an excellent communicator when it comes to how he dealt with anger and challenges in his life. I find it incredibly inspirational.

And Connors went a step further than McEnroe by using obscene gestures on the tennis court in the misguided belief that such crude gestures were "entertaining". Tennis pros can be entertaining without resorting to yelling at officials, foul language or crude obscene gestures!

I don't know if the tennis craze in the 1980s and 1990s would have happened if not for Borg vs McEnroe. He probably brought hundreds if not thousands of gifted American and European athletes to the sport of tennis.
Could be, but I think the tennis boom really started in the early-mid 70's with Evert, Billie Jean, arthur Ashe, Conners, etc. or even before with one match between Rod Laver and John Newcomb that was broadcast o National TV. But yes, McEnroe and Borg was very influential.
That is one of the best sports anecdotes I have ever heard - Bjorn telling John to settle down and just play for the fun of it. It took me for ever to understand that concept. That is what competition is about - your best against my best, then we go have a beer afterward and laugh about the outcome. 👍🍻

It was only on for a few weeks, but I thought he showed great promise as a host. The show also had a lot of good lesser known music acts of the day.

The first player to dare to go to the net and not stay at back court. He brought excitement and passion for his fans and other players who dared to play the entire court. When it was tennis season I ruled what we watched.
Probably, but a mile of a difference between them in ability as players. Kyrgios will never even approach the heights McEnroe did and will be quickly forgotten. Not the case with McEnroe, one of the great players.

They are men, not women, very passionate, ego driven, but all in for the sport. I was rivetted and entertained and forgave their outbursts. Why? Because of all the hours they trained. The conditions on the court, cameras, crazy and good and subdued fans. Prejudiced judges now and again. Press paid to get the dirt and not the history of it, the struggle. They are human and have personal lives with worries to cope with too. They were the superstars of the day. Different time. But he got it right. Snobby sport, outrageously priced. We were rivetted to the tv screen for every match. I don't watch tennis today. Too many rules. Too much elitism. Too many opinions like yours to tell passionate players...oh do behave, be quiet. Would you tell an actor that on stage? Don't the dramatic actors with flair and panache, joie de vivre keep the seats full? Winners give their all. Get along to go along will not fill a stadium and rake in the interest and cashflow for big and deep pockets of clubs, venues, sponsors, owners, coaches, tv crews, msm, vendors of food and drink, security, cleaning crews, coach, bus, limo and taxi drivers, shop with club and player merchandise, souvenir stands, ball crew, lines people, umpires, trophy makers, last but not least? The players themselves. They with their expressive style of play bankrolls all of the above. Shoe companies, racket makers, court teams for grass at least. Net makers, ball makers. So some leeway can be afforded and entertaiment can be had, memories made, action recorded and tales for the dinner table can be told and retold with proof. History. Living history. Can't be beat.
Great player now great commentator too bad his first marriage didn't work out. I never had to live with an addict so maybe it was necessary to divorce her and keep the children from her. But she never recovered or had a second carrier. Her father abandoned her as well. No happy ending for her.

The three other guests had all each been interviewed in detail earlier on the show. I think they were totally appropriate guests (not interviewers) during John’s segment. Letting him have his chance to speak but giving him supportive nods and smiles at appropriate times. They didn’t seem rude to me at all. They seemed very polite.

I saw the 1980 Wimbledon final live....in the morning (rare at the time), including that tiebreaker. These players needed each other as a challenge.
