As a fifty-one yr old finding new music is difficult, because the old tried and true places are gone. Magazines:gone. TV shows: gone. Music venues:gone. Jeez, even music formats are gone! However, I also realise those are just excuses because paradoxically (and a contradiction) finding new music is also easier than ever - as long as I don’t blatantly reject it from the first listen! And that bit is crucial. If I challenge myself to stick with a new sound even if I don’t initially like it, it will often grow on me, then I’ll begin devouring everything the artist has ever produced. The algorithms and ad targeting are bloody spot on imo and I love the way my music feed expands exponentially as long as I keep clicking and listening. Killer! 😀👍
That social aspect is a crazy way to think of that!! While we might desire to stay open, the other people around us become less open-draining our openness. I think culturally most people ‘grow up’ because everyone else around them is pushing them too. Amazing vid. I just started undergrad research, so I can relate to digging into a research paper and getting hype from them! 😂
I hadn’t even thought about that - the influence of everyone else growing up probably impacted me too - GOOD LUCK with research too it seems like proper hard work
ive only been out to see live music a few times in my life but it just hits different when you know there's actually people in front of you making the music instead of just in your headphones.
I find it fascinating how many of us, who grew up immersed in the digital world, are now seeking out simpler experiences that technology has somewhat taken away from us. I try to embrace those simple things myself, and it’s really inspiring to see others doing the same. I recently came across your channel, and I absolutely love it! Your videos have such a raw and genuine feel-you really capture your music-making journey. It inspired me so much that I’m considering starting something similar myself.
Hey there! I definetly felt like i lost some connection to music recently and I am so happy I stumbled across your video. For me i think multiple factors were involved. I study psychology and music was my hobby aside from that and I really felt it when you said that not completely commiting and putting in work to maintain your relationship to music can be a reason. When I explore music by myself it always feels a little bit like "but why would i listen to this when there is so much else as well?". Songs and albums didn't really seem special anymore and i just miss it to have my people who were super into the same music as I am. Amplifying all of it was the fact that i recently finished an album that i was working on for two years and while this has been my driving force of my personal creative life, it also gave me the purpose of listening closely for inspiration in the music that i listen. So many times i heard a little lick or something and i directly thought "wow, something in that style is exactly what i need for the last chorus of this song". Now that this project is finished i start questioning what i want to create and music hasn't been as catchy to me. I personally tried to get out of it by listening to albums that didn't listen in a long time, but where I remember that i loved listening to the whole album. I relistened my favorite beatles albums and so forth. It did help me to some extend. Now i wanna try to use the information from your video to connect again to music and to some extend to life, as I felt quite depressed for the last month, but thats anothee story. Thank you for your nice video
damn matthias I feel u there - even though it's been tough after finishing the album that's a crazy accomplishment and it makes me grateful that the process made u love music more. gl with it
honestly, i personally haven't really lost interest in music, infact it's been growing. To me the study was really interesting! The whole video was a great watch, and if I ever feel low with music I will 100% look back at this!
i’m from germany, 21 years old and in the pretty same position as you. Music is my life, but listening to it is not the same as it was, but your video inspired me so i decided to buy a cd-player and listen to my old cds again and go to some stores and buy some cool older and maybe newer cds and listen to it without doin something else meanwhile. thanka for this you great videos, as a musician myself i really enjoy you videos and take it as an inspiration!!❤
You have a great attitude, Camus. I loved this video and it’s great that you tackled the issue. Ok, I’m going to sound like the boring guy who sits and home which is rather typical of a guy in his mid-60s (I’m 64). As a musician I’ve wondered a lot about this topic as I found myself increasingly listening to less music until about a year ago when I “rediscovered” a joy of it in ways I never expected. I started listening to way less contemporary music starting in my 40s. Why? I’m not sure, but maybe a super busy work life was part of it. I started doing the stereotypical thing of only listening to music from my youth. Recently though, I “semi-retired” and have started spending way more time again listening, really listening, to music again, but the kicker is that It’s been classical and jazz that I’ve been listening to. What has totally surprised me is that some classical works (even if I knew of them a little before) have come out of the blue and grabbed me by the … and totally excited me to the point that I listen to some of them over and over like I used to listen to albums over and over as a teenager/early 20s guy. I’ve been “surprised by joy” at all of this, and it’s fantastic. One last thing, I’ve found as I have gotten older that I realize there is less time in front of me as behind me and that there is a HUGE world of different music that I could not listen to even if I wanted to. The good thing is, I can go in so many directions and explore so many different musical genres and works, that it’s virtually a bottomless pit of things to discover. How wonderful is that? I think those studies were good in illuminating some of the reasons for not listening to music as we age, but maybe I’m an exception. BTW, I loved your visit to the record store. That was my life when I was young. I am now listening to albums of my time (70s, mostly) that I never listened to back then because unlike now, you could never afford more than an album or two per month. I miss handling records and dropping the needle, but I way prefer the digital well of music available now. Plus, it’s a whole lot less expensive to access. Keep up your music and your videos.
This perspective is actually so valuable, thank you John ! Do you think the resurgence came from more deep active listening or the extra time for it or maybe even both? Maybe even working as a musician less let you just enjoy it more? Either way this is fresh for me, a nice reminder about how lucky we are for all the access we have to music right now - I definitely needed it.
@@camus.mp3 - I think mostly, I had more time in my day so that I could just devote it to some music listening. Something else that added interest to me was to write down my thoughts on what I’m listening to as I listen. It means I am even more focused on what I’m hearing. Having said that, there’s also times when music playing as “furniture music” is fine, too. 🙂
Awesome video man, you’ve been killing it lately. I think not just your analysis, but presentation and articulation are on point. Keen for the next one!
Damn.. Camus did a music documentary. please more of that. Right now Im in a time of my life where I listen music the hole time and I couldnt live without it. If you reeally want this vinyl from mac there are alot cheaper and I could send it to you. Much love... Ellen ❤
I just finished undergrad psychology and I did my dissertaion on the exact topic you were researching (link between music taste and personality), I recognised that first paper because I cited it in my own paper Its so random seeing it in a YT vid.
CAMUSSS!!! I'm so happy for your growth recently. Your videos have been doing so well recently and I'm really happy for you Not that it's about the numbers anyway right👀? But yh big congratulations PS: The EP slaps, very emotional and introspective👍👍👍
@@camus.mp3 Yeah it sucks at first but it's 100% worth it, caffeine completely messes up your dopamine system. If you think about it, when we were teenagers our dopamine system were pretty much intact, no vices like later in life like alcool, caffeine or smoking. It could take weeks or even months to fully restore your baseline dopamine but the changes are real. When it comes to music, I enjoy it a lot more through out the day instead of only during the 45 minutes - 1 hour after a coffee. + as a side note, my anxiety is completely gone and my mood is way better. If you're curious, check the book "Caffeine blues" for other stories like mine.
Seeing you talk about this makes me realize that I'm not the only one having this "problem" with music. I loved your approach to it and I definitely found some answers through your video. I personally found myself listening to the same amount of music overall, but consuming it more passively instead of actually listening to it. This might have to do with the way we listen to music nowadays, as you said. The fact that it is all in your phone and you can listen to it anytime may not be that good in the end. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and I encourage you to keep up the good work. PS. Did you get the Jazz piano 1-year practice plan in 7:40 from somewhere online?
ah that's so good to hear we're in this together, love these thoughts - to the jazz piano plan it's all on Piano With Jonny's website (got there from a video)
Vinyls these days are ridiculously expensive. I used to go into my old vinyl store to buy Drum n Bass records and they were £5. I cannot justify £40 for a new record by some artist whose music is not even worth the price of a tea bag.
