I sailed for many years. I had a cruiser, much like yours, which had a cook stove much like your new one. My boat had a heat shield covering the surface of the nook in which it lived. The heat shield consisted of a thin sheet of metal covering the surfaces of the nook into which the stove was installed. The idea is that the metal sheet distributes the heat over the entire heat shield, thus preventing high heat from the stove doing damage to the inner wood surface of the nook in which the stove lives.

Stain is meant to be wiped off after a short period. You can re-apply after each coat dries, but puddles should be wiped off.
I use 2 cloths, one for applying and 1 for wiping off. That way you work the stain into grain, without waste.

Hey Ned, I know what that hole is, it’s not for a heater, it’s for a periscope, just in case you take on too much water! BUT that won’t happen if you carry a few cans of the Great Stuff, expanding construction foam for backyard ponds, works great in an emergency. If you get a crack or hole in your hull you can spray the foam into the crack or hole while underway. If it’s a large hole you can stuff a plastic bag into the hole then quickly fill it with foam! You guys are awesome, good luck, smooth sailing… Happy Sails!

I used a silicone for creating molds to copy my structure in the ceeling. Peeled it off and used it on my repair. Taped off the area, put gelcoatputty on the silicone and pushed it up in the area.
The day after it was just the edges to fix 👍 great to see you getting it done 💪

To fix your ceiling, make a stamp from the existing ceiling. Cut a small round board slightly larger than your repair area. Put about a 1/8 inch layer of bindi on the board. Rub wax or oil on a small area of your ceiling and then push the wood with bono onto the waxed ceiling. Hold until bono hardens. Pull off and you have a stamp to fix your repair areas. Put you bondo on the repair area, wax your stamp, and press it on the ceiling. When bondo is hard, pull stamp away and you should have perfect ceiling texture on repair areas. Good luck.

Those vents ( in my opinion) are so the boat will be well ventilated while it's being stored. Since our boat is open 20 + hours a day we have no problem with mold or anything like that.

Looking good guys. Your hard work is paying off. Here’s a tip for getting a match on the texture in your boat… Get some silicone caulk, clean a section of your ceiling away from where you’re working and put some cleaner wax on it so it’s really slick and then spread about a quarter inch layer of the silicone caulk over that section of the ceiling and let it cure. Once it’s cured, peel the silicone off and you will have a mold of the pattern of your ceiling, then apply your Bondo over your area of repair and once you have it spread out, take your mold and push it up into the Bondo and it will replicate the pattern of your ceiling and once the bondo is cured, peel the silicone off and you should have a pretty good match of the ceiling texture.
    Best of luck!😁

Nice progress! Matt, one trick for wetting out those 'glass patches is to put the patches on a piece of plastic sheet (visqueen), stack them a couple of layers thick and wet them out then stick the whole layup on the overhead and leave the plastic sheet until dry then peel. The plastic will act like a peel ply layer and may even give you some texture like the overhead has. I got my Sailing GBU shirt! thanks!

I know this information is too late. But here goes, If you are near a Home Depot or a Lowes OR .... a paneling store inquire if they have "vinyl paneling." I think you boat ceiling was done in vinyl paneling.
It is only an 1/8" thick but it comes in 4' x 8' panels with that bumpy texture on one side. Smooth on the other.
I think the stuff is great for laundry room walls and other spaces where you don't want to paint and a wipeable surface is desirable. BTW ... Good Job 👍

You can make a 'perfect' match in the ceiling texture by creating a "mold" from any area of the existing ceiling. WEST System folks have instructions for doing it. It's most often done to make a match for repairs in Non-Skid areas, but it should work fine for "any" textured surface. It will be "exactly" the same texture as whatever surface you use to make the "mold"!

One thing always in short supply on a boat is ventilation. Surprised you did not just put in some kind of vent in those deck holes. There are many options available. I went with solar powered, low aspect power vents. You can get some with batteries so that you have 24 hr venting. When you close the hatches on that boat in the tropics, it gets stanky and hot. Vents with built in fans are a great benefit. But, too late now.

Good episode guys! Have an idea with regard to matching the ceiling texture: Is there some type of gel/nonstick silicone/silly putty type product you could hold up against the ceiling, and create a texture match? Then at the appropriate drying time in your bondo, or similar topcoat, apply the template to your ceiling patch? Just a thought and hope this helps you disguise the holes you eliminated. Really looks like the interior is starting to take shape. You have made a lot of progress! Take care and thanks for sharing your fun.

Why not take a template of the existing ceiling with clay or something that hardens then remove and let dry. Use THAT as your texturing stamp? :^)
Also instead of the buterol tape sometimes wax from a toilet bowl ring works well to stop leaks. Should always keep 1 or 2 rings on board anyway in case of a hull puncture...

A heat gun is better to use for bending , doesn't take a lot of heat ,so no need to burn it ,if you apply heat on the inside of the curve it will prevent the cracking on the outside . Pine, as with all materials, has it's pros-n-cons. Pros: readily available, relatively inexpensive, easy to work with tools, generally holds fasteners well when pre-drilled and can be pressure treated. A patch though will always look like a patch but not as bad as a smooth circle. I've done a lot of matching in the construction industry and often you will find something lying around that will do the job. I guess though you have finished this by now and it looks just spiffing

Find one of those 'mod-podge' type products they sell in the hobby/crafting stores.. Wax part of the ceiling that has the right texture you want, and stick one of those things to it, let it harden into a stamp with the right texture, then use that. :)

Hey guys the natural wood will darken up under the stain an sealer. If your veneer is synthetic it will stay the same.
It’s a looking good, enjoy the process. Much luv from the great white north.

Dang giving shade to the Whitby again. I promise we aren't all ass holes. If it floats and gets you out its a great boat.Love your refit. We been doing a lot of the same things to ours. Have you thought about solar vents for some of those holes. Air flow makes everything more comfortable

Love the channel. To match the texture on your patches have you tried using the existing texture as a template. You might try waxing or applying a small amount of oil to an existing texture spot and press some clay or putty on that area to make a stamp. You can then use the stamp after it hardens to press onto your patch skim coat to leave behind a matching texture.

Hey guys, you’re amazing and adaptive! I love how Matt makes lemonade with the lemons life throws at him. Here’s an idea to match the ceiling texture, if it isn’t to late: get some playdoh or any moldable substance that won’t stick to the ceiling and squeeze some of it between a scrap of ply and the ceiling. Then, pull it off the ceiling, let it firm up and use that as your mold (instead of the tin foil). Or just put a cool sticker up there! 😂

Use that same bondo , cover a piece of ceiling with release agent and press the bondo against the ceiling. You now have an exact copy pattern stamp to apply to the wet bondo 😉

Matt you might want to try spraying an area with mold release and paint on silicone mold material, when dry peal it off and you have an exact impression of the pattern you are trying to duplicate.

I love the layout of the hunter . How well does it sail in ruff seas I've read articles there a well built boat but from what I've heard they are to lite and are a ruff ride in high seas . If you have the time could you give me your thoughts on them

Use a piece of vinyl leather to imprint the pattern on the soft filler. You can spray it with cheap hairspray as a release agent (PVA type hairspray).

Paint ceiling blue with white clouds. Apply white lay cellophane over white paint and your will have beautiful clouds covering imperfections in textures. Motor cycle technique.
