I started remodeling my house when I bought it about 15 years ago.. I stopped remodeling a little past the halfway point.. about 11 years ago... Guess I ought to get back to work.. I believe you have inspired me.
Finishing work is always the hardest, quadruple that for a boat! And to do all this wearing work sandals and safety squints is amazing! I’m excited for the power plant and electrical, call me a nut job, don’t care. I watch all the other sailing/boat repair channels, but GBU, is the one I look forward too. Keep up the great work and be safe!
We love your videos, never miss them. We've been watching for a couple of years now, but I have to let you know something. Seriously, treat the pvc dust like its radioactive! it will not just dissolve like wood dust in your lungs. It will fill up the little areas in your lungs and you may not even notice it until you try diving one day and cannot get enough air. You don't want to be dragging an oxygen bottle around the deck someday. Keep up the videos. You're doing great with the boat too.
Hi guys and gals, doing this will build alot of character for you both, and last a lifetime. Now, just as T. Micheal Rearic said, please treat the dust as bad stuff. Buy 1 or two extra hoses for the vaccum and have it expell air outside the vessel, and have Kristen vaccum with the nozzel as you cut or sand inside. It will save alot of dust and clean up while you work. It is a pain but it helps you not have to clean up the same dust 5 times,nor have to re-breath it also. Small preventetive actions now, can have a big impact on your health later. And possibly your child's health too. If you do not belive me, read the warning labels on your fiberglass container, although you will need a magnifying glass to do so. Best wishes, it's really starting to look great, don't give up. And Matt, Screw the haters.. The main reason I watch your channel is because you're doing things out of your wheelhouse, and on the cheap. Too many other channels start making money, and paying people to do things for them, or buying things that cost more than their original boat!
Hey Guys! I have been watching you channel for a long time now and felt that I needed to comment. So I have worked in the bush in Africa as a missionary for the past 26 years. I am a qualified airplane mechanic/aircraft electrician/and all round do anything guy. Matt I would work with you any day in the bush because you are not afraid to try anything and if you are stuck you will make a plan. It may not be the most beautiful but what you do is functional and you save money doing it. Anyone who can grow such a great moustache is good in my books. Kristen I love the wat you support your man, in this cool rebuild.

Guys, this is from a custom cabinetry designer and manufacturer. 50 + year old family business, 25 years of personal experience. Ok? So, I have to say my hat´s off to you guys. The only time I´ve done anything comparable to what you guys are doing to that Hunter, I´ve done it with my boat INSIDE my cabinet shop, with every possible piece of equipment , tool, and material you could possibly need for the job, including CNC equipment. NO rain, perfect 72 degree weather, no bugs and a crew that comes into the boat to clean and organize everything as soon as I come off it. You guys are doing everything in the most difficult manner, limited tools, on the water, in the tropics. Videos do not tell the whole story. Hot, muggy, cramped, working conditions. I can only imagine the inevitable arguments you two must get into , off camera. But I´ll be damned, you are doing a bang-up job. You learn as you go, screw up, stand back, re group and get back at it and succeed. Somehow, in spite of your inexperience, you are actually pulling it off. Call me impressed. Matt, great job! But if you are left handed, get left handed scissors. That will help keep you from tearing up the laminate when you are cutting it. And remember, the last 10% of any job takes 90% of the time

Matt, My father was a master carpenter, cabinet maker, and custom home builder. He owned tools you have not dreamed of and used them in his work. That said, you impress me with how much you accomplish with so few tools. My compliments.
Long time viewer. Matt, I'm quite impressed by the quality of work you are doing considering the conditions you work under and the tools you have to work with. No table saw, no sliding miter saw, no bandsaw, no router table, no drill press... etc... but best of all, NO FEAR, in tackling something you've never done before. Your channel are honestly one of the very best. There are a lot of perfect people out there, with perfect boats, doing perfect drinks and beautiful sunsets... If some day I have a boat of my own, and sit near a Caribbean island, I will surely look a lot more like you guys.
When you are all done and you get the first scratch in the new woodwork, don't scream. The work you are doing is totally for hard living and evidence of that will be an almost daily thing. But, the great work you are doing will shine through. Kudos to both of you. (I'm wearing my GBU t-shirt!). Smile....
You need to laminate both sides of the cabinet doors or they will warp. Make templates with paper or cardboard. Use masking tape around the outside to fit perfect. Keep it up. Laminated for 30 years.

Hey Guys. I been watching you guys for a couple years now. I especially like the one when you guys sailed from Florida and got lost in Cuba. I spent half of my life on sailboats, cruisers and a number of commercial vessels. I am a archaeologist but still love the boating scene. I can tell you from years of experience you must have your boat to function practically. I support your restoration and making things that function to suit your needs. I can recall one time when we had a wire bundle on fire and couldn't get to it because it was buried under and all through some crap. We started ripping things out the boat to get to it and put the fire out before it spread through out the entire boat. I think one must have access to every component in an emergency on blue water. It looks great and I cant wait to see the finish product. Hope you get sailing soon and be awear of the upcoming hurricane season. Stay safe. Really enjoy the videos.

Hi guys I'm a pandemic listener and promise to continue long after. I am also a soon to be retired journeyman carpenter/ homebuilder and does some of your techniques leave a lot to be desired...sure but this is not the intention of this comment. That being said, it's a little known fact that one of the leading causes of divorce in our country is going through a remodel. Whether that pertains to remodeling a boat im not sure but anything a couple do together can be stressful to a relationship. Whenever we are having a disagreements it's so easy to just say screw it and give up! You guys are a beautiful couple and my unsolicited advice to you is to look at everything you are doing to the boat is equal to making improvements to your relationship and giving it a strong foundation which is WAY more important than anything that you're doing to the boat. I wish you guys all the best and I will be seeing you in the near future D.
You guys are rocking it. Couple suggestions: Find a good weighted roller go over all of your formica pieces once you glue them down. Also, there are trim bits you can buy for your router. This will help you going forward. You can cut a piece big by just a bit....then trim it flush once it's glued down.
I built 1000 square-foot guest house and a 2700 square-foot House all while being married, it’s not easy and it pains me at times to watch you guys do this. I know what you’re going through and I know it ain’t easy, but hang in there it will be worth it in the end you guys have the right attitude and mindset to get her done! You’re getting closer and closer to me and I hope to meet you before I head off to Trinidad this year during hurricane season. I really admire Kristen . She has so much confidence in you Matt . My wife always tells me to hire someone to do a project around the house , even when I know I can do it myself . At the end of it all , you guys are knocking it out of the park . You should use some white caulk to cover the gaps . They sell mold resistant caulk for bathrooms that I think would work great . I love watching you two work together so well . Great Job !
WOW that curved edge for the recessed lighting looked really100%. The router jig table is totally ghetto genius. There is always a million small steps in finishing. Your off to a great start/finish!

I've done a little cabinet work in the past. Currently I'm a self-employed arborist who does it all with ropes and harness, no bucket truck. I'd rather be trimming/removing 6' diameter 140' tall trees over a house and a power line than doing cabinet work. Ya'll are doing awesome, keep up the good work, it looks great. Table router was a nice piece of gbu diy. Look forward to meeting ya'll in person someday if I get out there on the ocean in 2023.
I give you a lot of credit for being very inventive, retired from construction home improvements I had a lot of people start working for me and didn’t know what end of a hammer to drive an nail 🛠
Also regarding sanding the mica edges, you can take a piece of scrape wood 10" by 3 1/2" contact bond what ever grit sand paper you are using to the piece of wood all the way around. This way you have the 3 1/2 flat side for large long runs back and forth and the short (wood thickness) for the tight corners and hard to get to places. 40yrs custom kitchen cabinet makers have all the tricks! good job, it's starting to come around!! cheers!!

Use a heat gun to bend the Formica/plastic laminate strip. Coat the surface that it will be mounted to, then coat the underside of the plastic laminate, and wait a few minutes for it to get tacky. Use some small wood strips to keep it off the base, line it up nice then press one edge to the base, then pull a strip of wood out as you work it down. Then roll the surface to get any air bubbles out of it.

Coming along great guys. One piece at a time; as long as you're happy with it; you'll look forward to the next phase. If you use stainless steel rods you can adjust and set the glued laminate sheet right on your work then remove each SS rod and your glued pieces will be aligned once you touch the glued pieces together you almost can't get it apart to adjust. Again; the glue won't stick to the SS RODS and you pull them out one at a time and press the glued pieces together.
You are right! You have better ideas than those big boat builders. We're sailing a 37' Pacific Seacraft Crealock that's supposed to be a "high quality build". But to access the port scupper hose, we basically have to disassemble the nav desk first. So yeah, the boat builders don't give enough thought to how the boat infrastructure is supposed to actually work.

That means whatever you do, it’s all great work. Amazing skills creating tools. Just be careful with your countertop and heat. That may be the one item that won’t last. I used similar lights, get a few spares. The nice part is you can just pull them out any time. I'd suggest wago connectors or similar so they can be swapped easily. I've lost 2 of the two dozen that we have over the past three years.
I love your v-birth and rant. The real beauty of building so many of your own fittings is in knowing how to easily remove them again. It would be nice to be able to transfer all that thought, energy and innovation easily to any other boats you buy in the future. Your call out to the manufacturers for your services isn't nearly as fictitious as you make it seem. Oh, at the end of any rant, I put EOR to mark End Of Rant. I'm surprised you didn't do the Formica cutting with a 8 foot plus metal straight edge and a good box cutter or other knife. Sure, with the masking tape too. My favorite parts? The shots showing both of you working side by side, by far. Every couple can learn positive lessons from watching this episode.
I like how you are replacing plywood with starboard. Won’t matter much in your ownership, but it’s much better in the long run, especially for that overhead trim piece.
I'm sure that you've already done whatever you are gonna do by the time we've seen this, but the way to flush cut edge banding with with a razor blade. Push it along the face of the cabinet and flush trim the edged banding. They make a tool, but a plain blade in your hand does almost as well. In any case, you guys sure are doing a lot of next level finish work with hand tools and its coming out good. Keep up the good work!

Very impressive with all the skills that you both have developed during the refit-especially impressed with Matts table saw to cut the laminate. It's all looking great and finishing is always the most difficult as the smallest imperfection seems to be obvious but only because you know where to look, no one else even notices. I have one thing I would comment on and that is the ring of bolts hanging through the deckhead around the mast, I would shorten them and put blind dome nuts on the ends for safety. Keep up the great work as it is all coming together and you will be proud of it

Router table. And good job. Little tip if you glue on a full face and cut out the holes the grain will match using the cut off. A little tricky and has to be a straight cut with a thin blade without scratching the banding.
I hope you put the laminate on the plywood in the rebirth, before the trim with the lights. You guys are awesome. Look forward to your videos every week.
Been subscribed and following your channel for more than a bit, really enjoying it. I think the work you are doing with the tools you have is pretty incredible. It is all looking great and you have a real knack for interesting practical design. One thing that catches my eye all the time now, since you mentioned it on a previous episode, are the extended bolt threads on your mast compression post. I think cutting them off somewhat wouldn't be a bad idea but even if you don't I think you could use your MacGyver skills to clean them up visually. Just take some of that pvc board, cut it to form a 1/2 ring around the post with holes drilled in it to allow the bolts to pass through, and then build it up a layer or two thick whatever thickness is required to cover off the remaining bit of exposed thread with some cap nuts. If you're worried about the seams you can bondo that shite up, fair it out and paint it. There is no need to do this as it is purely aesthetic but since you are doing such an amazing job on the rest of the finish, it seems a like a simple thing that would really clean up the look of them Frakenstuds.
Yup that's the way. Doing a DIY flip on the interior of your boat is like painting a room you start at one end and work your out the door. 🤔👍Just don't forget your incredible already tight doors aren't going to fit after the veneering. Their all going to have be sanded to fit. Keep nocking it out ignore those cheesy hater know it all's. Keep a cool head like Chester Cheetah. 😎👍
Really happy for you guys, your smart , creative , funny as hell . Formica isn't hard , files and your router . Just remember if you use contact cement use wooden dowels between the contract face , that will allow you to position your piece , then pull out the dowels and drop the Formica in to it's final spot . Guys, this is from a custom cabinetry designer and manufacturer. 50 + year old family business, 25 years of personal experience. Ok? So, I have to say my hat´s off to you guys. The only time I´ve done anything comparable to what you guys are doing to that Hunter, I´ve done it with my boat INSIDE my cabinet shop, with every possible piece of equipment , tool, and material you could possibly need for the job, including CNC equipment. NO rain, perfect 72 degree weather, no bugs and a crew that comes into the boat to clean and organize everything as soon as I come off it. You guys are doing everything in the most difficult manner, limited tools, on the water, in the tropics. Videos do not tell the whole story. Hot, muggy, cramped, working conditions. I can only imagine the inevitable arguments you two must get into , off camera. But I´ll be damned, you are doing a bang-up job. You learn as you go, screw up, stand back, re group and get back at it and succeed. Somehow, in spite of your inexperience, you are actually pulling it off. Call me impressed. Matt, My father was a master carpenter, cabinet maker, and custom home builder. He owned tools you have not dreamed of and used them in his work.
That said, you impress me with how much you accomplish with so few tools. My compliments.
Long time viewer. Matt, I'm quite impressed by the quality of work you are doing considering the conditions you work under and the tools you have to work with. No table saw, no sliding miter saw, no bandsaw, no router table, no drill press... etc... but best of all, NO FEAR, in tackling something you've never done before. And gotta love Kristen's upbeat cheer!

When you are all done and you get the first scratch in the new woodwork, don't scream. The work you are doing is totally for hard living and evidence of that will be an almost daily thing. But, the great work you are doing will shine through. Kudos to both of you. (I'm wearing my GBU t-shirt!). Smile....
You need to laminate both sides of the cabinet doors or they will warp. Make templates with paper or cardboard. Use masking tape around the outside to fit perfect. Keep it up. Laminated for 30 years.
Thanks for having Bear in the video, he looks great! I'm totally impressed with the contraption you came up with to cut the strips, that was brilliant. Things are starting to come together even though you still have a ton of "finishing" to do, you're both so dedicated to having it look good and functioning well for your needs, I've no doubt you'll be proud of what you've accomplished.

Hey Guys. I been watching you guys for a couple years now. I especially like the one when you guys sailed from Florida and got lost in Cuba. I spent half of my life on sailboats, cruisers and a number of commercial vessels. I am a archaeologist but still love the boating scene. I can tell you from years of experience you must have your boat to function practically. I support your restoration and making things that function to suit your needs. I can recall one time when we had a wire bundle on fire and couldn't get to it because it was buried under and all through some crap. We started ripping things out the boat to get to it and put the fire out before it spread through out the entire boat. I think one must have access to every component in an emergency on blue water. It looks great and I cant wait to see the finish product. Hope you get sailing soon and be awear of the upcoming hurricane season. Stay safe. Really enjoy the videos.

Hi guys I'm a pandemic listener and promise to continue long after. I am also a soon to be retired journeyman carpenter/ homebuilder and does some of your techniques leave a lot to be desired...sure but this is not the intention of this comment. That being said, it's a little known fact that one of the leading causes of divorce in our country is going through a remodel. Whether that pertains to remodeling a boat im not sure but anything a couple do together can be stressful to a relationship. Whenever we are having a disagreements it's so easy to just say screw it and give up! You guys are a beautiful couple and my unsolicited advice to you is to look at everything you are doing to the boat is equal to making improvements to your relationship and giving it a strong foundation which is WAY more important than anything that you're doing to the boat.

You guys are rocking it. Couple suggestions: Find a good weighted roller go over all of your formica pieces once you glue them down. Also, there are trim bits you can buy for your router. This will help you going forward. You can cut a piece big by just a bit....then trim it flush once it's glued down.
I built 1000 square-foot guest house and a 2700 square-foot House all while being married, it’s not easy and it pains me at times to watch you guys do this. I know what you’re going through and I know it ain’t easy, but hang in there it will be worth it in the end you guys have the right attitude and mindset to get her done! You’re getting closer and closer to me and I hope to meet you before I head off to Trinidad this year during hurricane season. You guys are great and I’m hoping that I’ve got at least part of your back!!!

I really admire Kristen . She has so much confidence in you Matt . My wife always tells me to hire someone to do a project around the house , even when I know I can do it myself . At the end of it all , you guys are knocking it out of the park . You should use some white caulk to cover the gaps . They sell mold resistant caulk for bathrooms that I think would work great . I love watching you two work together so well . Great Job !
WOW that curved edge for the recessed lighting looked really100%. The router jig table is totally ghetto genius. There is always a million small steps in finishing. Your off to a great start/finish!

I've done a little cabinet work in the past. Currently I'm a self-employed arborist who does it all with ropes and harness, no bucket truck. I'd rather be trimming/removing 6' diameter 140' tall trees over a house and a power line than doing cabinet work. Ya'll are doing awesome, keep up the good work, it looks great. Table router was a nice piece of gbu diy. Look forward to meeting ya'll in person someday if I get out there on the ocean in 2023.

I give you a lot of credit for being very inventive, retired from construction home improvements I had a lot of people start working for me and didn’t know what end of a hammer to drive an nail 🛠
Also regarding sanding the mica edges, you can take a piece of scrape wood 10" by 3 1/2" contact bond what ever grit sand paper you are using to the piece of wood all the way around. This way you have the 3 1/2 flat side for large long runs back and forth and the short (wood thickness) for the tight corners and hard to get to places. 40yrs custom kitchen cabinet makers have all the tricks! good job, it's starting to come around!! cheers!!

I think you are doing a smashing job based on the budget you allotted for this. It adds value and comfort to your boat that it was lacking before
Use a heat gun to bend the Formica/plastic laminate strip. Coat the surface that it will be mounted to, then coat the underside of the plastic laminate, and wait a few minutes for it to get tacky. Use some small wood strips to keep it off the base, line it up nice then press one edge to the base, then pull a strip of wood out as you work it down. Then roll the surface to get any air bubbles out of it.

If you use stainless steel rods you can adjust and set the glued laminate sheet right on your work then remove each SS rod and your glued pieces will be aligned once you touch the glued pieces together you almost can't get it apart to adjust.
Again; the glue won't stick to the SS RODS and you pull them out one at a time and press the glued pieces together.
You are right! You have better ideas than those big boat builders. We're sailing a 37' Pacific Seacraft Crealock that's supposed to be a "high quality build". But to access the port scupper hose, we basically have to disassemble the nav desk first. So yeah, the boat builders don't give enough thought to how the boat infrastructure is supposed to actually work.

Always fun to watch your jenky build style with the Mario mustachios growing like a weed. Not much that you could do to your boat to make it look worse than it used to look. That means whatever you do, it’s all great work. Amazing skills creating tools. Just be careful with your countertop and heat. That may be the one item that won’t last. The banter between you both is so much fun to listen to. Can’t wait to see the finished product.

I used similar lights, get a few spares. The nice part is you can just pull them out any time. I'd suggest wago connectors or similar so they can be swapped easily. I've lost 2 of the two dozen that we have over the past three years.
I love your v-birth and rant. The real beauty of building so many of your own fittings is in knowing how to easily remove them again. It would be nice to be able to transfer all that thought, energy and innovation easily to any other boats you buy in the future. Your call out to the manufacturers for your services isn't nearly as fictitious as you make it seem. Oh, at the end of any rant, I put EOR to mark End Of Rant. I'm surprised you didn't do the Formica cutting with a 8 foot plus metal straight edge and a good box cutter or other knife. Sure, with the masking tape too. My favorite parts? The shots showing both of you working side by side, by far. Every couple can learn positive lessons from watching this episode.
I like how you are replacing plywood with starboard. Won’t matter much in your ownership, but it’s much better in the long run, especially for that overhead trim piece.

I'm sure that you've already done whatever you are gonna do by the time we've seen this, but the way to flush cut edge banding with with a razor blade. Push it along the face of the cabinet and flush trim the edged banding. They make a tool, but a plain blade in your hand does almost as well. In any case, you guys sure are doing a lot of next level finish work with hand tools and its coming out good. Keep up the good work!

You need to get a router with a bull nose bit Matt to make life a little easier getting those rounded corners.Doing an amazing job with what you have.
You might need a die(?) grinder or a small Dremel type battery powered one with a small 1/8 router bit. Great job. Keep building your dream! Be well you two 🥰

Spent a few years making laminate countertops-we used a file to cut down and dress up the end caps. Takes the 'sharp' out of the edge too.
I am impressed with Matt. He is one of the finest craftsmen I have seen. He brings off things with tools that I would never start. Great skills in Matt. Now Khristen is another kind of person. But no less impressive. What a team. She is competent, in other things. She gets being a woman and is a woman fully. What a great team.
Patron pictures on this finished looked great. Also the work on the bathroom sink looked great as well. I can wait to see the old girl back together and completed.

Very impressive with all the skills that you both have developed during the refit-especially impressed with Matts table saw to cut the laminate. It's all looking great and finishing is always the most difficult as the smallest imperfection seems to be obvious but only because you know where to look, no one else even notices. I have one thing I would comment on and that is the ring of bolts hanging through the deckhead around the mast, I would shorten them and put blind dome nuts on the ends for safety. Keep up the great work as it is all coming together and you will be proud of it

Router table. And good job. Little tip if you glue on a full face and cut out the holes the grain will match using the cut off. A little tricky and has to be a straight cut with a thin blade without scratching the banding.
I hope you put the laminate on the plywood in the rebirth, before the trim with the lights. You guys are awesome. Look forward to your videos every week.
Been subscribed and following your channel for more than a bit, really enjoying it. I think the work you are doing with the tools you have is pretty incredible. It is all looking great and you have a real knack for interesting practical design. One thing that catches my eye all the time now, since you mentioned it on a previous episode, are the extended bolt threads on your mast compression post. I think cutting them off somewhat wouldn't be a bad idea but even if you don't I think you could use your MacGyver skills to clean them up visually. Just take some of that pvc board, cut it to form a 1/2 ring around the post with holes drilled in it to allow the bolts to pass through, and then build it up a layer or two thick whatever thickness is required to cover off the remaining bit of exposed thread with some cap nuts. If you're worried about the seams you can bondo that shite up, fair it out and paint it. There is no need to do this as it is purely aesthetic but since you are doing such an amazing job on the rest of the finish, it seems a like a simple thing that would really clean up the look of them Frakenstuds.

Yup that's the way. Doing a DIY flip on the interior of your boat is like painting a room you start at one end and work your out the door. 🤔👍Just don't forget your incredible already tight doors aren't going to fit after the veneering. Their all going to have be sanded to fit. Keep nocking it out ignore those cheesy hater know it all's. Keep a cool head like Chester Cheetah. 😎👍
Really happy for you guys, your smart , creative , funny as hell . Formica isn't hard , files and your router . Just remember if you use contact cement use wooden dowels between the contract face , that will allow you to position your piece , then pull out the dowels and drop the Formica in to it's final spot .
