- (21 Sep 1994) The prospects of a peaceful first-ever democratic election in
Mozambique received a boost on Monday (19/9) when leaders of nine
parties contesting the election signed a code of conduct in
Maputo. In signing the agreement, the leaders committed their
parties and supporters to conducting a free and fair election and
ensuring that they accept the outcome of the election to be held
at the end of October. In an exclusive interview with WTN, former
guerrilla leader Alfonso Dhlakama withdrew threats to boycott the
other parties and President Chissano in particular, to consider
the creation of a government of national unity after the election.
President Chissano rejected the call, saying it was a decision for
the next government.
