I was just baffled by this "unlikely" lovestory between a blind girl and a mass murderer.. Ralph Fiennes does a great role as a grown man with a personality disorder, meeting for the first time in life someone who can understand him, but too late, way too late.
Ralph is very intense to begin with, so it's natural that he can play creepy / scary characters. He has more trouble playing "affable" - the same as Francis Dollarhyde.
Their story in the book was like a subplot. You almost start to feel sympathy for Dolarhyde. You actually want their relationship to blossom. But tragically, you know it can't, even as you're reading it.
I actually teared up watching the scene when his house is on fire, and he's got the shotgun to Reba and he's telling her he's got to shoot her, and she's crying and telling him not to and the raw emotion on his face looking back at her and seeing what he's doing is, like you said, just incredibly tragic...and heartbreaking.
This scene does a great job of showing how Ralph’s character thinks. He longs so much to be happy with Reba but his insanity and demons in his head war with him over it and this drives him to fake his death to avoid killing her
@@Redstripe921 nah it plays out the same as the film. It's been 10years since I've read it, but he's pretty much going back and forth between wanting to sleep with her and murder her. DollarHyde is trapped within the Red Dragon at this point and is struggling to control himself.
Yes. In the book, he regularly bites and chews rubber blocks to strengthen his jaw muscles for biting. He also trains very hard with weights, has a very muscular body and lifts hundreds of pounds.
A blind woman had hit on me once back in college. She was beautiful too but she wasn't completely blind, she could see movement but just couldn't give descriptions of the person. She looked like a cross between Uma Thurman and Jodie Foster. One time when she was coming back to the dorms and sat next to me on the couch that I sitting on and was taking off her heels and then she asked me "Could you be a sweetheart and do me a favor?" and I said "Sure" and then she asked "Could you massage my feet, they're killing me!" and she just puts her bare feet on my lap and I just said "Okay, if that's what you want."
***** I understand why you would say that but her feet were perfectly fine. Not stinky or dirty in any way. She was coming back from a party and she had on this glittery black dress on and these black high heels on. I think she asked to rub her feet was because she knew that I had taken a massage therapy course at the community college I attended before I transferred to Arizona State University. We had talked to each other a few times before that moment. For a blind girl, she was sharp-witted and flirty, and could tell who you were based on how you walked and movement. Like I said before, she could see shadowy images of people and objects, but everything else was just bright white. Anyways, we talked for a little bit on the couch as I massaged her feet and when I would pop her toes, she would giggle. We had a good friendship until that one night, the night I did something I shouldn't haved!
+Kenazzle There's a context there. I personally think a blind person would be more shy and reserved. Also, everyone has different perceptions. I don't think I've ever met a blind person.
She just does not age , i swear she looks the same for the past 30 + years she has been in films , she is an award winning actress whos name rarely comes up when great actresses are brought up I'm conversation. I still don't know if she is Irish or American , that's how good she is and little i know about her.
I really feel like the score didn't lend itself to many scenes in this movie. Especially a scene so well acted! Silence and fewer camera cuts would have been perfect for this, in my own humble opinion. These two portrayed everything necessary themselves without any assistance.
Ralph's performance pales in comparison to Tom Noonan's portrayal of the same character in the same story, Manhunter from the mid 80s. That version was directed by Michael Mann. That film was released at the height of Mann's Miami Vice so the sets and clothes often look cheesy by today's standards, but the actors were incredible.
The style of that film is of its time, but I personally love it. The art direction in Manhunter was superb, especially Dolarhyde's home which is of course very different from it's book counterpart. I just find it much more interesting as a film than this, and the same goes for Noonan's performance, Ralph was great, Noonan was Dolarhyde!
I loved his take but yeah, I kinda prefered Tom Noonan in that aspect because he's uglier and more pitiful in appearance, closer to Thomas Harris' vision.
The novel explains that while he was in the army as a young adult, he got successful plastic surgery, including a nose job, to correct his cleft palate and cleft lip so he looked relatively "normal" but the psychological damage, bullying, physical and emotional abuse he suffered as a child was so severe it caused him to become psychotic.
This was so so sad also did i dream the part in the book when francis brought her to the tiger and she touched the tigers bawls and francis got heated because i remember physically gagging

Emily Watson is such an underrated actress. This and Punch Drunk Love were her greatest performances.
No love for her riveting turn in 'Hilary and Jackie' ?
This scene, along with the scene where he's yelling at the "Dragon" always make me tear up. Their performances were awesome.
Ralph's performance is incredibly tragic. I'm actually a little teary-eyed right now.

Ralph is one of the goats of acting for real

Such a touching scene. Who knew a psychotic serial killer would be so cute? XD
Crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch, maybe leave the thumb. For measuring pies.
This part of the book was so good. Dolarhyde was so fucked up.
Did he eat her in the book ?

DollarHyde is trapped within the Red Dragon at this point and is struggling to control himself.
In the book, he is actually considering whether or not to bite off her fingers.
Daniel Ryan I think that comes across in the scene as well. She must have felt the sudden moist heat from his open mouth on her fingers too.
Tell me the book's name please
Rupanshi Dhruv ..... Red Dragon.
HAHA my brother gave me the book for my birthday long before the movie came out and was thinking about the same thing during that scene
Yes. In the book, he regularly bites and chews rubber blocks to strengthen his jaw muscles for biting. He also trains very hard with weights, has a very muscular body and lifts hundreds of pounds.
She's probably my favorite character after Will Graham in the book. She's so badass. She doesn't let her disability hold her back.
Truth is it was actually really sweet when he took her to touch the tiger

All those excited for the richard Armitage version?!
+jkrfan7 His was probably the best version yet
I am a big big fan of Ralph Fiennes, for me he is the best of course but I have to say that Richard Armitage did an awesome job, loved it!
I am Francis Dolarhyde's most avid fan

he is the one character that is just as good
@@bill3901 Bryan Cox did not win an Oscar like Anthony Hopkins did, and while he played the character somewhat differently, he was equally brilliant.

Saw this in the original manhubter and it was a really well done scene.
Even though Noonan and Fiennes played Dollarhyde very differently, they both were tragic.
he had to return some video tapes.
I have to go ....... :(
Fiennes was brilliant in this role, but Francis is supposed to be ugly.
Welcome to Hollywood, where even the ugly people have to be beautiful.
I loved his take but yeah, I kinda prefered Tom Noonan in that aspect because he's uglier and more pitiful in appearance, closer to Thomas Harris' vision.
He is
He’s supposed to think he’s ugly, latching on to one imperfection, but they never say he’s actually ugly (though maybe I forgot)

She was looking...
Oh yeah he was about to eat her fingers
Gobble
〽️
her haircut does not suit her. but it is a beautiful scene.
wouldnt a bad haircut suit a blind person
lmao i had weird opinions huh? still do
lol
Agreed
Manhunter is better.
girl is blind this movie...
Oh really?
There are no good scenes in Red Dragon. The acting is an abomination. A disgrace to disrespect Manhunter.
I never seen the Manhunter, and Red Dragon is one of my fav movies, the way I see it, everybody was perfect
This is a very good scene
