Honestly one of my more favorite parts of your music has always been how it can bounce seamlessly by song between lyrics like the hyper-literal 'My level has robotic ostriches, bats, and big monkeys' and actually unbelievably powerful shit like 'Your speed means nothing if it's death that you're running from' as early as the first album. You're so good at walking a thin line between having fun with the goofy saturday morning cartoon video game you're building off of and, just, actually framing some extremely powerful story beats out of it.
And I mean, that's JUST talking about Get Equipped; this is to say nothing about one of my favorite songs you've ever made, which is about an unstoppable holy warrior dedicated to defeating the unnatural evil consuming his world, coming to face the consequences of slaying Death Itself in an attempt to save his home and country, staring into the eyes of the one true Grim Reaper and seeing genuine fear as not even he knows what the repercussions of this will be upon the world. How the fuck did you do that after an album with a song that's just Rocky II Except With Funny Robots. What are you guys made of.

This is my favorite thing about the band and what makes me love every song. "The Haystack Principle" has been my favorite song for over nine years and I don't think anything will beat it anytime soon. It really speaks to me. All their songs tell a story, let's us see a character in a different way.

really interesting to hear about the process of these songs and how The Megas found their footing : )
now that i think about it, "Can't Stop the Top" from History Repeating: Blue sort of reminds me of the early tracks; it doesn't really get into top man's psychology, but it still gives you the vibes of the character. on the flipside, one of my favorite tracks, "I'm Not the Breakman", is almost 100% about the psychology of the character.
anyway, i think that the way The Megas evolved over time is amazing, and that drive to improve is what has me hooked as a fan ^^

  • @eckitronix

I mean, it's all so surreal how amazing and in-depth they are, whether or not they seem to be. You've got your fellas like Top Man who just wanna vibe and speen around to music and probably just do the whole Wily War on the side, Metal Man just chilling and ready to get killing in his extreme and comical overconfidence (he's able to be felled by two of his own blades!), Magnet Man who's into Roll but has to deal with the growing possibility that this could get him hunted down by Mega Man, Snake Man trying to slyly twist ethics and words around to point towards the fact that what Light's doing is practically the same thing as Wily, Hard Man just wanting not to be forgotten as a really good boxer and his challenger being Mega Man with the intent to kill, Air Man wanting to nuke an entire supercity just because he has no friends since he flings them away in gusts of wind, and even then you get to find it gets even deeper than that, Gemini Man kinda going through a whole noir-like mystery as to how to save his own life with the help of his hologram double, Wood Man who controls the natural areas and probably just wants to take Mega Man out for the sole purpose of proving nature superior to technology or having a prejudice against robots made from steel, hell, even Elec Man and Bomb Man are kinda deep in a way, Elec Man seeking freedom from robotkind being used as free labor and starting a riot over it, Bomb Man finding that the more bloodshed he enacts, the more he can feel emotions. Ice Man n Fire Man are just solid bros and think teamwork is a good plan, and I can't blame 'em, and Cut Man and Guts Man just...don't exist, possibly(?). Then we even have the really painful individuals; Bubble Man gets bullied and made fun of for being a water-specific combatant and does all he can to fight for his own respect, Quick Man tries to outrun his own fate, probably knowing full well he can't, Flash Man is lonely, with no one around down there in those blinking, blue, freshly-waxed floored catacombs and hoping to find some common ground with Mega Man, Crash Man who doesn't really even wanna fight, and is just nervously watching his last moments happen, knowing the only way to stop everything is for his own inevitable end, Heat Man having to deal with ruling over as the guardian of Robot Hell and hearing the distorted screams of the fallen, Needle Man having been constructed just to do things he doesn't agree with and willing to be taken out just for the self-loathing to stop, Shadow Man being absolutely terrified because he doesn't remember who he was before any of this and only knows that what he's doing is wrong, Spark Man having to cope with the deaths of countless brethren before him, and igniting that spark of rage within him, even Proto Man questioning what he is, trying to put himself together as a new identity, Dr. Wily knowing that what he's doing is unacceptable, but irreversible, and that he's gone absolutely insane with the stress of completing a weaponized Gamma supercomputer and mechsuit combo to exterminate all of humanity. Everyone here has thoughts that cannot be ignored, even if they're super simple and almost a joke. I mean, I feel like if Cut Man n Guts Man had their own music, Guts Man would probably just want to rebuild from all of this and be upset that his ambitions kept being destroyed, and Cut Man just wanting to be a hero for his side and literally 'cut man' just so he can be praised. This is after years of humming and learning the lyrics you've all created for these goofy machine people, and they've only become more and more relatable and understandable as time goes on. Hell, even Skull Man has something going on, being a sort of vengeful reaper type, digging graves and seeing all the hundreds dead, blaming Mega Man for this, and wanting to end the violence. Usually Skull Man's depicted as a warmongering monster, but here it seems like he's filled with anguish and rage simply because of the warfare and wants out, even if he has to become a murderer to do it.
You guys are actually genuinely astounding and I cannot help but wonder sometimes what you're all up to n doing. There's always a lot here, and I kinda hope that you guys don't get tired of it, even if it means you'll be 62 and doing a joke album about a cyberpunk pizza delivery chick or something, because I have absolutely no doubt that it'd be a banger too.~

  • @mattpostingcinematicuniver7920

I definitely feel the psychological aspect present in song like Programed to fight and Blue like you. It reminds me alot of how the later games would go into the characters personal motivations and philosophy behind why they fight. Like X's hesitation towards Violence (Which was handled alot better in Zero), Ciel's Shame in having created copy X, Zero's grief and fear in Mega Man X4.
I really love how we get to see that level of detail in songs like Message from Dr. Light, where Light is hesitant to send mega man out there to fight and fears for his death but knows that his strong sense of justice and desire to do right make him the ONLY one capable of stopping the issue. Airman's hatred and Loneliness (that speech at the end still gives me chills to this day, I love it). Or my personal favorite example Snakeman trying to talk megaman into becoming one of them. I could see that eating Rock alive having to even think about betrayinhg Light but seeing that maybe Snake has a point, or at the very least is just REALLY convincing. And while he doesn't go through with it in the end it definitely changes his resolve at least a little bit.

The funny thing is you can continue on with similar themes, I see Sparkman as the logical continuation of your take on Elecman's track just as one example. Time has passed and the next electric robot is a little darker and more jaded but it's the same idea, it's not just History Repeating but taking the next step forward.

Literal, psychological… but the one answer people want to know about the lyrics… why does “Man on Fire” have a different introduction for each version? Haha. Not sure if that was ever answered or not.

I'm so glad you decided to stick to the original music! For me that did something special that other rock operas (eg Jesus Christ Superstar) couldn't do, and I'll explain how. Now JCS is a very good rock opera, especially for me that grew up pentecostal and became an atheist. But since I didn't hear the JCS music as a child (except the main theme which doesn't have much meaning since it's in the cultural background radiation, much like the SMB theme), I could only relate to the combined music and lyrics as an adult. That is good enough, but not extraordinary. It didn't hit me in the guts like a ton of bricks like your music & lyrics did. First, I grew up with the Megaman music much like you. Experiencing the game and music as a child with the immersive wonder that only video games can give. Mostly adventure with a hint of tragedy (the ending of MMII). It (and the other NES music) being the soundtrack of the happy parts of my childhood - some kind of adventurous innocense. Then came your albums, filled with grown up themes (and playfulness, literally) like hate, murder, absent parents, lost identity, loneliness, mental illness, depression etc. What it did to me was to unite the sad and terrifying parts of my childhood, the loneliness, fear and depression, leaving me a mentally crippled person, and unite it emotionally through the childhood soundtrack that was the Megaman music. Suddenly I could be with me as a child in both worlds. I've never experienced that with any other music - it wasn't possible until you did it. That effect would not have been as strong and pervasive if you hadn't stayed with the original music. I can see my childhood through your lyrics, eg "the one who took my place" is the scared survivor stuck in a robotic survivor mode replacing the prototype (the Archie comics made a wonderful twist on this giving Megaman slight PTSD for a while). You also describe the phases, functions and limits of rage so well ("my rage repairs what once was broken", "this rage is not your destiny, it's holding you down"). I could go on for hours but the main thing here is you made your music existential for my by sticking to the original music and I'm ever grateful for that!
