    I used a cement board siding called "Maxiplank" in place of Hardie to save a few bucks. It shrank, cracked and warped. After many lawsuits, they went out of business. Sometimes it is best to stay with a known product. Hope you have better luck Nate! Love the videos that you and your dad produce!

    I'm a siding manager for a turn key siding company in South C Carolina. We do all types of siding from vinyl to Hardie to cedar. The siding your referring to that's painted is called Color Plus. Its nice but very labor intensive and expensive.

    • @user-vb3ly7ib4r
      @user-vb3ly7ib4r 3 місяці тому +2

      Why is it labor intensive? I'd assume it would be less so

    • @GeofDumas
      @GeofDumas 3 місяці тому

      More or less labor intensive than the unpainted stuff?

    • @michaelcarroll991
      @michaelcarroll991 3 місяці тому

      @user-vb3ly7ib4r a few reasons why. The corners are attached using corner brackets that you nail on the back of the 5/4 board that you nail to the wall. The same for the trim around the windows. All the trim comes with a plastic film on top of it and you leave it on when you nail it and come back with a paint dobber to fill the holes. If you look up how to install Hardie Color Plus siding you'll get a better understanding of what I'm talking about. But also the installer has to use a ISO caulk to caulk all the gaps and you can't screet it like you do normal caulking.

    I have windowed and sided many homes in my day. I do not tape over the bottom window flanges as these guys have. Come back in ten to twenty years and you'll know why. Also, I tape directly onto the bare sheathing, then have the WRB overlap. Just common sense. Finally, I vertically strap the walls before siding. Seems everybody knows these techniques but some guys go simple instead. Thank you.

    • @GeofDumas
      @GeofDumas 3 місяці тому +4

      @@MattsAwesomeStufffor the sake of others asking why, its because putting tape over the bottom of the window flange interrupts the shingle style layering of the different components. that bottom flange may get water dripping down it over time and you want it to fall on top of the next shingled layer, and not be caught by something on top.
      There should be tape on the bottom of rough opening of the window so the flange can go on top

    Watching ppl not pre assemble their window trim is not easy. I can measure, cut and assemble a whole house of window kits in a few hours. If you do it piece by piece you’re wasting a ton of time. Not to mention pocket screws and a good adhesive will hold the trim together much better than a couple face nails near the joints.

    Nate, I'm 100% in on Essential Craftsman, and clan wadsworth; love your entire brand.... but with all respect sir, I'm 1,000% OUT on any siding that is within a mile of the phrase "wood pulp". After years in exterior home improvement, I can't possibly stand behind anything James Hardie. Yikes.

    • @IronsInTheFire-Official
      @IronsInTheFire-Official 3 місяці тому

      @tedreid1035 Well you might be right still. However, in the southeast here, I've seen house after house with compromised hardie board due to not booking a painter every 12 months religiously. Cracked, crumbling, looking like rotted wood almost. Used to it was rule to gap butt joints and caulk them. Imagine: relying 100% on the integrity of caulk to stop wall sheathing rot. Now, that rule has changed? I'm not a siding guy, I do gutters... but I'm also observant and I've not yet observed a build that made me want to fall head over heels for putting up hardie. I'll say, it does indeed look nice brand new and freshly painted, but find a good painter and go ahead and book him on a rolling schedule.
      Maybe I'm surrounded by bad builds and bad builders (total truth) but surely a product like that can survive a less- than- ideal install.
