    Hey, who dared to give a thumbs down to this video?? The more I hear about Cuenca, the more it sounds like Taiwan. We, too, have businesses grouped together. There's Shoe Street in Taipei, and Wedding Street, too. Not to mention all the scooter repair shops! I'm happy you didn't have the yard filled with tarantulas like Dena Jo did, that sure didn't sound like fun. I carry an umbrella all the time, a nice big one. This helps me fend off the scooters on sidewalks and the cars that try to hit me in crosswalks. It doubles as a cane when my knee starts to hurt, keeps the hot sun off me, and saves me from being drenched. So pleased I'll be able to get good bread there, really miss that, because it's something Taiwan lacks. We have street cleaners here, and they ride on their scooters, stopping along the way to sweep. I always feel so sorry for them having to clean up the ridiculous number of cigarette butts that are discarded. Many of them are older women, but sometimes I see older men, just never any young people doing that job. Totally awesome that GMO stuff is labeled clearly to help us avoid it, woot! The excellent health care in Ecuador is also one of my major reasons for choosing that country. The National Health Insurance in Taiwan is soooo great, and I can't imagine moving anywhere (especially the US) that doesn't have that. Like you, I am an incredibly punctual person who just hates to be late. I've had to adjust to Taiwanese people (and especially my university students, argh) not really caring if they're on time or not. Still grates, even after 14 years of it. I've seen some guys peeing in public here, but thankfully the women don't tend to do that. Of course, we have soooo many very clean, FREE public restrooms (I love that). I do carry tissue at all times, though, since some of the public restrooms don't supply it. I don't mind rain, because the rain gives us all the beautiful green and cleans the streets (I'll be arriving in the middle of it, haha). I don't enjoy walking in the rain when there's a strong wind, though. At least Cuenca doesn't have typhoons - I shall not miss those. If you're able to buy a good dehumidifier, that will help with the cold during the rainy season. Sidewalks...oh yeah. I walk with my eyes down, because sidewalks here are often made of small squares of cement which, due to having heavy scooters ridden on them all day every day (and frequent earthquakes), are sticking up to trip the unwary pedestrian. Or there are gaping holes where street work is being done, not cordoned off, just in the middle of the sidewalk. Thanks again for all this wonderful information. I'm going to share once again with my friends so they can have a better understanding of why I'm moving to beautiful Cuenca. :)

    • @AmeliaAndJP
      @AmeliaAndJP  5 років тому +2

      Sounds like Taiwan is very similar to Cuenca. The blue crew also consists mainly of older women here. We’ve seen a few guys and very few young people. We have very little wind so you’ll like that. We’re excited to meet you in person 👍😊

    This is a fun video! You guys have a great lighthearted attitude. Thanks for another entertaining and informative one. We were in Loja last December and the tile sidewalks scared the crap out of me! I don't wear heels or anything with slippery bottoms, but the hills can be steep and one of the things I kept thinking about was "How do people deal with them when it rains?" I love the singing trucks! Lol. In Zamora, the garbage truck sings too. It's so cute!

    This is an enormously useful (and wonderfully entertaining) video, Amelia and J.P. Thank you! I've only watched about a dozen of your videos since subscribing, but of those I think this is easily one of the most informative. Even the bit about the 'Blue Crew' was an unexpected and captivating little treat. I love the fact that the Cuenca government is so pro-active about keeping the streets and public areas so clean and livable!
    Okay, here's a couple of oddball questions I'm hoping you can answer for me: 1) I notice you folks say "Ecuadorians" when speaking collectively of the country's residents. I've heard both "Ecuadorans" and "Ecuadorians" used in the same manner on other videos. Which descriptor do the locals prefer? 2) I love cycling (biking), as it's great exercise and a very practical transportation alternative for running errands in town. I know Cuenca drivers have a reputation for being crazy and a bit careless about abiding traffic laws. Do you see many cyclists around Cuenca? Are there any streets with bike lanes? And is it safe to ride in the streets as one would in the U.S.? Thank you. Be well and take care.

    • @AmeliaAndJP
      @AmeliaAndJP  5 років тому +3

      Great questions! And glad you found the video helpful. We love how clean the blue crew keeps this city. We haven't noticed the same thing in other parts of Ecuador.
      We've only heard Ecuadorians used. I'm guessing people who say Ecuadorans (which is showing as a misspelled word) are from the southern US states. 🤷‍♂️
      Cuenca has lots of bike lanes, and more are being built as part of a movement to make Cuenca more health and environmental conscious. We have an Ecuadorian friend who leads bike tours if you need a contact.

I have been to Cuenca quite a few times...lived there in 2015 for almost a year. We are not in position to live there but we are going to do the next best thing and, hopefully, try to do half year here and half year there. We've been considering a move to Cuenca for a while, but I think your videos have helped us decide to go for it. You were looking for video ideas. Ecuador is a major flower exporter . The main market for roses being Russia. We find all sorts of Orchids varieties all around the world. 14% of world's Orchids varieties are in Ecuador. Their coffee is great some suppositly being sent to Colombia to be sold as Colombian coffee. Their chocolate is the best in the world. Speaking of chocolate, there's a small chocolate shop in La Ronda part of historical Quito own by a former chocolatier (as we say in French) from Switzerland and his Ecuadorian wife who's an ex history teacher. They sell good chocolate and explain the art of making chocolate. I've never been in Cuenca (the Athen of Ecuador) but, hopefully will get to visit. Thanks for your nice videos.

Sometime inthe US we enter a place here and the floor is covered with pee and other stuff that makes you wonder when was the last time it was ccleaned. In Germany soem places they charge you liek 1 -2 Euros to use the facilities but their were impecably clean. After each use they are cleaned up. People just pay and get good service!

Namely Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica or Ecuador. You have piqued my interest in Ecuador for sure! Keep the videos coming. I have my eye out for them. I am currently tied to the hip with my design/build construction business here, and need to brainstorm work I could do from a location out of the country. I haven't started exploring those options as yet, and would love to see a video from you as to what expats can or are doing to generate income while living in another country. Do you still have a house in Denver that you are leasing? Any experience of how well that works living thousands of miles away? How to supplement my retirement income is definitely a major interest of mine.

      Vegans Abroad - It makes sense to keep certain types of business together, that way people don’t have to travel all over. Those businesses compete with each other by price and of course haggling plays an important role. Whether it’s a flea market in Quito or the Casbah in Morocco. In the US they grab you differently. By the way Walmart doesn’t always undersell everyone, we have an Aldi’s with lower prices, although the variety isn’t there. Publix of course is ridiculous with their prices even though they boast on quality. No self respecting snob would be caught anywhere else lol 🙃 The MegaMaxi in Quito is for the pelucones haha 😛

      We really like it here, but I doubt you would want to eat those pigs. Let me paint a picture for you.... It's the whole pig: feet, head and tail. It's skewered from mouth to anus and suspended over an open half drum filled with whatever will burn. They're located on the sidewalk, just feet away from passing diesel buses and trucks. Exhaust fumes, toxic smoke, dust and bugs coat the dead and decaying pigs all day. When you place your order, they carve off a big chunk of the exposed flesh and plop it on your styrofoam plate. Whatever isn't sold during the day is covered in plastic and kept unrefrigerated until the next day and the next until it's all gone. It's a recipe for not only heart disease and cancer, but intestinal viruses and food poisoning. Buen provecho. 🤢🤮

    Great info. Even though you’re vegans would you consider including costs of proteins? And how do expats handle GI bugs their systems aren’t used to?
    I read if a boat is desired that one should purchase down there as opposed to sailing down when we move. Any thoughts?
    Also, how are prescription costs?
    Keep up the good work!

    • @AmeliaAndJP
      @AmeliaAndJP  4 роки тому

      Legumes and quinoa are very affordable here. Usually $1 or less per pound. Nuts and seeds are available but more expensive. We haven't had any GI bugs, but our poodle just did. They gave her the same medicine that they give humans and it cleared right up.
      I'm not sure you would be allowed to sail your own boat here due to the import regulations. If you want to live here with a boat, I'm pretty sure they would consider that a form of transportation, which gringos can't import. You would need to talk to Paul Wilches at Relocation Services of Ecuador to verify, though. Did you see that video yet?
      Prescription costs are typically 1/10th to 1/3rd the cost you would pay in the states. We don't take any prescription drugs so we don't have a lot of experience with them, but we know they're a lot cheaper. Our poodle's parasite meds were only $6.50 for the whole course. We expected it to be a lot more.

    Really enjoy your videos JP and Amelia. I was wondering what made you choose to live in Cuenca instead of the coast or other
    cities. Is the coastal area more problematic or have issues that keep expats away? Also, is the medical cost for seeing a specialist any different than what you pay for your family doctor? What about prescription medication and costs? Thanks for sharing your experiences. Jan and I used to live in Denver as well, but moved to Asheville, NC 12 years ago. Don't have to tell you that the cost of living here is ridiculous.

    • @AmeliaAndJP
      @AmeliaAndJP  5 років тому +1

      The coast is really nice but you can’t drink the water without a filtration system and internet access isn’t as reliable. We’re planning a trip to Salinas to see how we like it. That’ll be later this year.
      My neurosurgeon charges $35 for a visit which is the same as my GP. Most prescription drugs are about 10% of the cost here compared to the states. But some otc drugs like ibuprofen are a lot more expensive. We bring those with us.
      Glad you’re enjoying the videos 😊

Mi chocolate favorito es Pacari organico. Gary cracked up because I also have a hidden chocolate stash. I DO have a request for a future video: Pet advice. We're bringing our dog (aussie) and cat. Can you say anything about where expats can take their dogs to play? I read on Expat Pets that some people gather to walk dogs together in Parque Paraiso. Our dog is extremely social and LOVES people. We're hoping there will be places we can take her. Any pubs that allow dogs? Advice? Also we'd like to hear about how to take a dog anywhere.... I don't think they're allowed on buses, but surely there are drivers who are willing to take friendly dogs. We're eager to hike with her, but saw on your last video that she's not allowed in Las Cajas. So sad!! Do you know where dogs can hike? Thanks! - Bonnie -

    Ok, I keep reading that Ecuador is safe specially Cuenca. It’s all relative depending on what you compare it to. I go shopping at Walmart at 2am at times and nothing happens. Of course this is a town of maybe 20,000 in coastal central Florida. If I was out that late in Ecuador I probably wouldn’t be singing than song. I’ve been told by many people not to be out after dark and specially if I don’t know the area in Latin America. The incident with the Russians in Quito apparently took place at 8pm and in an area that’s known for crime. Haven’t heard anything else about the Canadian in Cuenca. Agree, that incarceration in the US is a private and lucrative business. The US sold its soul to the devil a long time ago in the name of profit. We’re living that reality now unfortunately. Ecuador’s incarceration might be low but it reflects another problem. They let petty thieves go based on the value of what they’ve robbed, I think 300 dollars or something. It’s perceived as a victimless crime if there’s no injury. It makes no sense to release them as they’re going to do it again. Aside from that your wallet takes a hit when the buggers run off with your camera or whatever. Gringo presence is good in Cuenca because the city government tries to keep crime under control knowing full well that expat dollars matter to the local economy.
