Forte San Felice was originally an islet that emerged in the northern area of ​​ancient Clodia Minor, where there was a wooden tower that signaled the entrance to the lagoon.
After the War of Chioggia it was recognized as a fundamental strategic place to guarantee the safety of the southern lagoon.
Thus the Castello della Luppa (or Lova) was built between the 15th and 16th centuries and, thanks to subsequent rebuilding, which began immediately after the end of the War of Chioggia in 1384 and lasted until the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797, we arrived at the current structure of the Island of San Felice which, seen from above, resembles a five-pointed star on the model of the Famagusta Castle in Cyprus and other Venetian fortifications.
This structure allows a 360 ° control both on the lagoon and on the sea and has proved to be a valid obstacle to the storm surges that continued to erode the island from the sea and the lagoon.
Very interesting from an architectural point of view, and still visible, the Istrian stone portal designed by Andrea Tirali at the beginning of the 18th century and the remains of the military fortifications, but also from a naturalistic point of view.
Currently it cannot be visited and a redevelopment of use is expected that takes into account and enhances both the naturalistic and landscape aspects, after the relocation of the navy that occupied the island in the last two centuries.
A walk or a bike ride allows you to admire absolutely unique landscapes and views and an impressive city skyline, especially at sunset.
