Tony's genius was that he was always interrogating the archaeologists as a skeptical viewer would; I hope that continues! You know what I mean, he would say, "It just looks like a lump of dirt to me!" And the archaeologists would have to explain and defend their view. I'm glad Stuart and others are continuing on!

That was his role as presenter, the viewer who knows nothing that's asking questions. That was part of the show design, not a dry boring explanation on what was what and when that documentaries do.

Yes, Tony is marvelous. No question.
But, no, he shouldn’t just “pop in” this early on. That would be really bad form- like he’d be upstaging the new presenters on purpose. Not a good look.

I started watching the early Time Team shows from’95 and’96 and I have to say that our man Phil was a work horse!! I don’t know how he kept up that pace for so long.😳 It’s such a joy watching the early shows.☺️

One of the great things about Tony Robinson on Time Team was his ability to act the part of the viewer and ask the kinds of questions we all had - even though he knew the answers. Another was his way of acting the devil's advocate as he challenged the archaeologists to explain why they did what they did especially when it seemed to go against common sense. I hope that the new presenters can bring this same approach to the new episodes.
Gotta say that I'll still miss Tony, though!

I've long been a fan of Time team , as I am of an age for it to have been regular family tv viewing from the very start. When I saw the new venture I was so enormously pleased to see that Natalie Haynes was to be involved and said to myself "they've made a smart move there!" as I am an avid fan of her "stands up for the classics " series' on radio 4, great knowledgeable historical humour, based on this interview Dr Gus Casely Hayford also seems to be a good presenting choice so far , looking forward to following as it unfolds ............

I can understand some who can’t and don’t want to move on from Sir Tony but I am perfectly content with the choices and prepared to give them a chance. The constant “box ticking” comment bores must have a warped view of what real life is and should be. There is room for everyone.

I always thought of the fab four of Time Team as an analogy of Star Trek.. Tony - the Capt.. Mick as the logical Spock, Phil as Bones - "We just have to DIG Jim!", and John as Scotty - "I can't get any resistance Captain, there just is no reflectivity for a villa... But I am sure the new Time Team will do great.. really enjoyed the first two days of the new dig.

I'm slightly worried about the presenters to be honest. They seem fine individually and both are fit for the role but will the show work having two presenters? Here's hoping they can make it work in editing. I also think we have to detach Time Team from Tony's presenting style in our heads which is obviously quite a challenge. :)

I’ve now watched the new presenters, and I have to say that I find Gus difficult to listen to. He uses the sing-songy, whispery voice that people use with children. It makes me feel as if I’m being talked down to. I may not be an archaeologist, but I’m also not a child or an idiot. I much prefer the way Tony presented the show - he asked the questions we wanted asked. He treated the adventure as if he were one of us. No condescension in sight.

I was born on a dig in the 50's, worked on Roman digs in the 60's and in the Far East in the 70's. Time Team is supposed to entertain and educate - if you haven't been entertained or learned something new you haven't been paying attention! Tough on you.

This comment and a few others I've seen just goes to show how far we have still to go as a wholly integrated society. Imagine for a second how it might feel for, let's say, a white middle-aged man if every single time he were to achieve anything worthwhile people would instantly dismiss it by saying he was only chosen because "they" had to include a token male and a token white person. "Box-ticking" has become as toxic a phrase as "virtue-signalling" and one day perhaps, when we have become fully mature, I hope it will cease to have the triggering effect it seems to have at present.

@@roxammon5858 See what I mean! Those warriors searching for signs of "wokeness" are tilting at imaginary windmills. "Our" history (and prehistory, of course) is there for all to see and for all to interpret as best they can. We need to be beware of those who would attempt to throttle any attempt to do so, because they are the true enemies of intellectual freedom. (I apologise if I sound contentious, but I really feel these confected culture wars should be brought to a close.)

    • @tweidig
      @tweidig 2 роки тому +4

@@philroberts7238 No, you are wrong. I am perfectly fine not having a white old man, if the choice feels natural and is solely based on the individual's merit. So for example, I would love to have any of the women who were part of the old Time team such as Helen or Carenza or Raksha Dave (who happen not to be white) as SOLE presenter of time team. It also feels like a more natural continuation for all the fans as they are attached to the old team that they have watched for years, and all three are great individuals who showed competency and enthousiasm. I am also against a duo, because it were much feels like an artificial construct and a forced statement "we need both a man and a woman." We don't. I just hope society is mature enough to just see people as invididuals and not as member of a category!

OK, Tom W, I'll take your word for it and won't accuse you of being something that you're not. But I don't share your fears about the new line-up and I certainly don't think it's anything to do with a diversity box-ticking exercise. Tony Robinson himself is fully supportive of the new venture and recognises that although the new TT is inspired by the old version it couldn't - and shouldn't - be a carbon copy of it. Carenza and Helen will be there just as before as working archaeologists - because that is what they are. The presenter's job is a very different one. It seems the producers realised that someone pretending to be another Sir Tony just wouldn't work and so they have made their decision looking at other factors. I think we should respect their decision and see how it turns out. I wish the new presenters every success and look forward to seeing how they will tackle the task.

I can almost sympathise with the 'box tickers' objection, given the clumsy attempts to show off diversity in adverts for banks etc. However, if I were ever to try and argue that a presenter were purely a box-ticking exercise, I'd at least first check them out with a quick Google search. Anyone doing this for Natalie Haynes, for example, would find she's got impeccable academic qualifications and entertainment industry experience to present any history programme. You can still listen to her '...stands up for the Classics' Radio 4 shows on BBC Sounds which are masterpieces of making the stuffy world of the Classics entertaining to a non Oxbridge audience - i.e. perfect for Time Team.
But I agree: a female and a black presenter would probably spoil it all for someone like you, so be sure not to let the door hit you in the arse on your way out.
